Two men of great historical importance.

Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British politician known chiefly for his leadership of the United Kingdom during World War II.

Christopher Columbus (1451 – May 20, 1506) was an Italian navigator, colonizer and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere.

Columbus didn't really do anything. There is evidence that Europeans were fishing in the Americas at least 50 years before Columbus got there.

I thought the point was not that he was the first one to reach the Americas (he wasn't), but that he was the one who got Europe interested in the New World.

It was only a matter of time.

This can be said of nearly every invention and discovery that has ever been made. It doesn't diminish the achievement of the one who actually did it.

Not necessarily. With the theory of relativity, it could have been discovered 20 years earlier. But it went a while with no one noticing it. Who knows how much longer it would have been, had Einstein not been there?
