My progress:
Euterpe - solved (thank you ralphmerridew!)
Thalia - solved
Terpsichore - not got the faintest idea [wondered if it was semaphore, but can't get that to work]
Urania - solved
Melpomene - solved [probably my favourite of the set]
Polyhymnia - see below
Erato - not got the fainted idea [tentative image IDs yes - but no connections]
Clio - solved
Calliope - see below
Polyhymnia - I have one discrepancy with my wordlist (an extra six letter word and one less four letter word) and an abject failure to fit them into the grid (I think there's only one way for the 8s to go, but after that it falls apart.) I am assuming I have several words wrong, but it's difficult to know without some confirmations (and the clues don't seem to be in alphabetical or word-length order.)
Calliope - I've done the first two parts, but can't extract a coherent answer from what I now have. _________________

| Re Euterpe: has anybody tried working it as a cryptogram? |

Brilliant. That's it. Thank you.
[edit: not that I understand the message, mind you ]
[edit: scrub that. I have the answer now.] _________________

| Anything I can lend a hint for? I'm kind of surprised you got stuck at the end of Calliope... |

Re Calliope:
Well the two letter sets I have are:
VEIPICDE
NSWAR
The second set is clearly ANSWER when you add an E. But I can't make anything from the first set even adding a letter.
Some suggestions for Erato would be nice (other than just "connect the dots"!) _________________

That's correct for Calliope; you're just not trying hard enough
For Erato: Remember that Erato's realm is love poetry, which may give a tip as to the "decoding" there.
As for Polyhymnia, I concede that I should have put those in alphabetical order. D'oh! |

Erato:
Ok, so I've finally twigged:
Eighty Gnomes (Katie Holmes) goes with Bomb Fuse (Tom Cruise)
Egg Lion (Meg Ryan) goes with Tennis Spade (Dennis Quaid)
but unfortunately I've now ground to a total halt.
Anyone else out there able to prod me some more?
edit: hmmm. Trial and error just based off those two gave me the answer. I still don't know who any of the other pairs are though
No idea about the meta though. Answers so far:
Euterpe - MISFORTUNE
Thalia - ONSLAUGHT
Terpsichore - unknwn
Urania - STARVATION
Melpomene - CRUSADER
Polyhymnia - unknown
Erato - (PAIR OF?) GLOVES
Clio - PASTORALE
Calliope - unknown [DEPICTIVE?] _________________

| DEPICTIVE is correct for Calliope. That's the only way to anagram the available letters, plus one, to get a word |
