| I participated in the competition but I didn't get much of a chance to look at this round. I'm pretty sure I got the answer to 'Say That Again' but that's about it. I'm pretty desperate for the answer to 'A Case of Sum-Antics' so if anyone who did solve it but doesn't want to spoil could PM me the answer I'd be eternally grateful. Cheers. |

| I'd be surprised (but probably pleased) if the answer to Sum-Antics wasn't adding X (both unknown variable and Roman ten) to I to get IX, as in one less than X |

| My answer, during the actual contest, was different than the roman numeral suggestion but equally simple. Hint: instead of adding an "I" to another quantity, my answer added an "N" |

For Say That Again:
I wrote 'red'
He said 'red'
She wrote 'read' (past tense)
I saw 'read' present tense and wrote 'write'
He said 'write'
She heard and wrote 'right'
I wrote 'wrong'
For the Dial Dilemma I must have either made an incorrect initial assumption or a cock-up in working, since my quickest path has 2 sequences which could be either clockwise or anti-clockwise. i.e. [
4CW,2CW,6AC,3AC,1CW,10CWorAC,4CW,4CWorAC.
] Any other offers? |

| I agree with Oscar's answer for STA and DD. I think the solution for DD is unique provided we want to keep the ball from reintering a previously used dial. |

Absolutely, which is why I thought I'd made a cock-up. I've now realised that several of my options would inadvertantly divert the ball to a different wheel, thus removing the ambiguities. I thus get:
4CW,2CW,6AC,3AC,1CW,10CW,4CW,4CW giving a combination of 6CW,9AC,19CW.
Regardless of that being the correct answer, it's a nice puzzle, Logain!
As for Word Search apart from noting that you could read certain text-style words such as B4 = before, MN8 = emanate, and K9 = canine, I haven't got very far. Substituting for v 12.1 to get V L A doesn't seem to go anywhere either... |

| For the word search, I noticed you could get a lot of postal abbreviations for U.S. states (TX, NH, SD, VT, and a few more which I can't be bothered to look up again now). Didn't really get me anywhere, though. |

| Could Word Search be a 6x6 Playfair cipher (a-z+0-9)? Then we're looking for the keyword to fill in the grid. |

| Nice idea, John Dalbec, but the presence of duplicates suggests we're not dealing with the 6x6 Playfair block here, unless we've gone through a conversion process first. After your suggestion I tried some Vigenere transforms based around v. 12.1 = V(igenere) with keywords LA/Louisiana/Los Angeles but still got nowhere. Still the thought persists that we're looking for a keyword to unlock this thing to give a proper word search... |

I'll make the comment that one of the ideas for Word Search was on the right track. It's meant to be straightforward, take the title and flavortext literally . Plus, like most puzzles in the competition, this wasn't intended to be multi-staged if that helps. |

Oscar in post 8...his first sentence on the Word Search puzzle was the right track. There are a couple key words in the flavortext in each of the first two sentences that limit what you should be looking for. And the title does hold a clue but it is not used to solve for anything.
...fyi, not sure why it changed recently, but the first column is overly stretched on the puzzle page and it should not be. |

Since no one's actually posted a correct answer for Word Search after all this time, I'll try and move things along...

B4, MN8 and K9 are correct.
The title v12.1..."12" & "1" does have meaning...hint: Oscar was 1/3 finished
The flavortext, "I wrote down some notes from this book I came across. I read it 2 or 3 times" has some key words...B4 and MN8 examples of the latter. |

I took the '2 or 3 times' to indicate that the words were formed from only 2 or 3 characters, vertically or horizontally. The only ones extra ones I could wring from the matrix were:
devious (DVS)
excess (XS)
easy (EZ)
envy (NV)
and you can almost get a string that makes sense
i.e. ...canine emanate excess before...
and devious is a good fit for a puzzle that's unsolved in over 6 months!
However I can't think of any groups of 12 which might fit in with these words, so I'm inclined to plead for the poor horse to stop being flogged any longer... |

OK. In an attempt to get this one solved I'll try to make the solution path clear.
The following are correct or missing:
1) B4 = before
2) MN8 = emanate
3) K9 = canine
4) DVS = devious
5) XS = excess
6) EZ = easy
7) NV = envy
8) ?
9) ?
10) ?
11) ?
12) ?
Ignore the actual words, I would start crossing off the used letters. Offhand some of the missing ones I can think of to clue you...music, a food, a clothing, and a sport.
The .1 for 12.1 means you will find another word in the end after using up the 12. |

Additional words:
ZT = Ziti
MC = Emcee
22 = Tutu
S01= snowing?

Correct final answer jbv. Thanks to you and Oscar for finally putting this one away. It seemed like an easy premise for the puzzle, so I never intended or expected it to go unsolved so long
The one word is backwards though..not snowing but 10S, or 10-S
The final missing word should be the two remaining letters...QT |

| Measured via number of teeth I believe there is a unique shortest path, which also happens to only visit each gear once, but there are several routes which also share that property. Since the combination must be unique you need to find the shortest number of teeth moves. |

XVII) A Case Of Sum-Antics
What unknown value can you add to 1 in order to get one less?
Would the answer be n + 1 = n + one = none
I'm new to this website... How do I know I got it correct??

For word search, I have the following additions:
QT (Cutie) or QTT (Cuties)
10S (Tennis)
and a couple questionable ones, N2 for into, 4M for forum, and ON for owin'. (OK, that last one is awful.)
I was expecting to find NME, but I guess Logain has none.
Also, Logain, you imply that there is something about the letters left over, but considering that there are two ways to make EZ, I'm concerned that this might be inconclusive. (Or are diagonals not allowed?)
edit: I hadn't read jbvntx's note when I wrote this, but he must be right with phonetics. However, I sort of think that MC is kind of weak, since that "word" is just the pronunciation of the letters M. C., which stands for "Master of Ceremonies." |

I'm new to this forum, having only just found the website.
I don't see any recent postings, or any answer to problem XIX.
I've solved it,
You see red, so you say 'red'. This is heard as 'read' and so written down.
The opposite is 'write', which is hear as 'right' and so written down.
The opposite of right is 'wrong.' QED _________________ donjar |

Hey Courk, is anyone doing updates?
I don't think I have any access to make changes to 'active' puzzles. I remember submitting the answers a few times ages ago.
Zag, emcee is in the dictionary and is a noun/verb which means master of ceremonies. He emceed the event.... for example. The flavor text was also to imply words were only up/down, left/right, so no diagonals. |
