It's the classic game-where-you-try-to-be-the-only-one-to-name-a-thing-in-a-category-that-starts-with-a-specific-letter!

If you don't actually know the game, when you play it at home it's done with cards that have lists of about 10 categories, and then you roll a die with letters. You then have about 2 minutes to name one thing in each category that starts with that letter. You get 1 point for each item BUT only if no one else has named it. You earn 2 points if your answer is two words that each start with that letter (Betty Boop for B, though Betty Crocker would be legal, just only worth 1 point). Any suspect entries are put to vote.

In a short while I'll be posting the big scattergories list. It's 45 categories split into chunks of 5. Each group of five will have 2 letters assigned to it at random from the 18 consonants (excluding Z X and Q). Players will then have a week to submit their entire list, with two entries for each category, one starting with each letter.

Scoring: 5 points for every entry that is legal and only you put down. 2 points if only you and one other player put it down. 1 point if three or more did.

If you make an entry that has two words that start with the letter your points get multiplied by the amount of words that start with that letter. Z Z Top would be worth double points for example.

Wether or not an entry falls into the category is pretty much up to me as mod, but try not to stretch the imagination too far. Also, you can't simply makes words start with an adjective to get it to "work." If the category was animals and the letter was Q, "Quick Fox" would not work. However if the adjective is part of the item's actual name, like "Old Yeller" for movie title, then it would count.

Woot I love scattegories and yeah there would be some issues with timing but if you set up a deadline I am sure that we honorable folk would abide. I also like the idea of seperate letters for the mega list. Anyway I'm all for it.

I think it has been done in the past as a single submission game.
Once I did Wicked Witch of the West for a W (and IF only I had remembered how many times mad appears in It is a Mad Mad Mad Mad World)

Don't all games here use the honor system unless otherwise stated?

What would be interesting is if we had some sort of "cost" for words, so that you pick a word only if you're sure that it will be unique. For instance, maybe for a particular letter, you only get 60 characters to use on the categories. It would then retain a little bit of the low possibility of getting every category answered while also increasing the predictability of certain answers (short ones).

I'm not sure I like the cost of words thing, it sounds like it's getting a bit complicated at that point. Surely having people submit 25 words, there are going to be different lists, and thus different scores. I don't think it needs to be any more complicated.

I guess I'm not wanting to make it more complicated, but if I have 3 days to think of a word that starts with T for movies, I think I can come up with one that no one else picks...

That's the real stress of scattergories. "Oh, Titannic...no, wait, everyone will put Titannic. But no one will put Troy. Because Troy stinks."

When did this game mysteriously change to Lexprod the Mod from Cordelia? Luckily I was able to edit my outbox items to redirect to Lex.

For "school subjects", is that specifically grade/high school or does it include universities?

Is this supposed to be totally out of your head, or can you do Internet searches, for instance? I have to admit that I thought of one really good one, but I wasn't totally sure that was the right name so I checked. That's when I considered that it might not be allowed.

I assume a leading 'The' is ignored in a title? (so such titles could be used for a letter other than T)

It's only the initial words that count, right? So MV's example above of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" would score zero when used for M. Correct?

How made up and ridiculous can these be? If the letter A were in Household Chores, could I say "Ably assisting Andy's android absterging armchairs."

Given that contentious ones are to be voted on, id be voting against Ably assisting.

M would be okay. Otherwise if the letter was I for Its MV would only score 1, and why would he do that...

How about the use of outside sources?

If it doesn't have to be the first words in a title, do they have to be consecutive? For instance, for TV shows, if the letter were M, would "My Favorite Martian" get double?

Outside searching is not allowed, and checking is a bit sketchy. There's no penalty for wrong answers, you just don't get any points for them. If I let people search then the obscurity level goes off the charts.

The initial word MUST start with the correct letter, with "the" being the only exception. So "It's a mad......" would count for I.

The "Ably...example" falls under unnecessary adjectives. Unless the adjective is part of the actual phrase or title or word you can't use one. "Dark Chocolate" works for D because Dark is part of the name of that particular chocolate. "Tasty Chocolate" does not work for T because it's not a type of chocolate.

For the double or triple etc. bonuses, the words don't have to be consecutive. Live and Let Die would be worth double, just like Liz Lemon would.

Ok. Thanks for the answers.

I'll use the one that I checked, because I didn't think about it before I had checked. I am pretty sure I would have gone with it anyway. I would have taken the chance of it being wrong, because it is such a good answer.

Moving through the list, I have more questions. sorry.

For 4-letter words, if we have a phrase made up of several 4 letter words, do they all count? For instance, if the letter were C, would "Cool Cats" count double?

So unlike the game, "Dark Chocolate" for C wouldnt be allowed?

Because of that some of my submission is now incorrect, but I am away for the weekend out of town. Can I request a 48 hour extension on the time limit please, as I will need to reconsider.

That category's limited to one word.

Er, correct on Dark Chocolate not counting, but I don't believe Dark Chocolate would count in the board game either.
