Lepton answered a question for me to get a general (Scorpio is an enemy of Orion, appropriate in that both are not fully in the sky simultaneously). I'm still holding the general until the last is answered, though.

General (for Spaceman Spiff): Was your singing typically part of a further stage production, such as opera or Broadway musicals? YES
Lepton*: Sarah Silverman. That gets you a general. She was the 'other' person I was thinking of...just couldn't quite remember the name!
Stumper: Are you a 9-fingered engineer with an apropos accent? No idea
Quailman: Were you a participant in the wedding of the century in 1981? (I was allowing the 2nd GMA question as I didn't 'block' such questions. You can ask it after/before/as well as this question if you like.) Diana Spencer.
ralphmerridew: Are you a former Vice President of the United States? Sure there are lots but I can't think of one.
Lepton*: Are you a military officer whose face appears on millions of tubs of fried meat? Not a clue
Zag: Did you hold the record for most gold medals in a single Olympics until it was broken in 2008? Mark Spitz
Cordelia: Did your boss capture an enemy hostage within a lantern? No idea.
I looked up the Orion question...Saturn wasn't a bad guess. I suspected it was astronomical but just didn't get the right answer...
Think that's up to date now. |

Hmmm. That wasn't the answer I intended (but there might be a case for it, depending upon your perspective.)
Oh, and Puzzlescot: Were you the commander of US army forces in the gulf war? I remember "Stormin'" Norman Schwartzkopf... _________________

bah! I didn't see the single generals following the post with a long list of them. I focused on these two:
| Quote: |
General: Was your singing typically part of a further stage production, such as opera or Broadway musicals? YES
General: Are you best known for your appearances on Broadway? NO
|
So part of a further stage production "such as opera or Broadway musicals", but not known for Broadway and not an Opera singer. What's that leave?

There are sorts of "classical" music that aren't opera (Strauss Lieder, for instance.) And I don't think that someone who is predominantly a live concert performer would be excluded either (perhaps a jazz singer?) _________________

Adlai Stevenson I was my intended answer.
I was waiting for my stumper to get answered, so I could ask "Did you play the title character in a movie which at least 38 GLers (not including Lepton* or ralphmerridew) have seen?" And now it's a stumper free zone.
And my knowledge of stage productions is limited, so my general's up for grabs. |

Not Beverley Sills.
I'm getting worried that my selection is too hard...however, I'm sure that people have heard of her. She had a singing 'claim to fame' and her music/singing is 'specialist'. If you've heard her name you are unlikely to forget it.
As for style, "Vaudeville, Jazz, Folk, Country & Western... " none of those...but perhaps the closest might be regional folk. There is a specific name for the music type but that would totally give it away.
General: Were you born in, or at any point a citizen or permanent resident of, the United States of America? YES
This might be misleading you...she became an American citizen but wasn't born in America. |

Nice one. Hard enough to pin down but definitely not obscure (to me, at least.)
I wish I'd asked the question about whether they were known by their birth name, which I asked in the I round but not this time! _________________

That's a relief, although there are some smart people around...and that name is so distinct that you'd remember it...try it backwards!
And it's all about questions you wish you had asked. The one I pointed out about being potentially misleading was one I'm sure would have fooled puzzlers.
Also, I'm surprised how hard it was trying to keep track of all the questions flying about. I'll have to work out a system next time I set one. |

To keep track, I start right away with a list of all the generals and unanswered stumpers, and I copy it and update it every few posts. Then you only have to scroll back as far as your last list. You'll still miss a couple of who-has-how-many-generals, or the odd stumper, but it helps you and the solvers.
Good choice for a subject. |

Thanks. Appreciate the support.
I was trying to do that but coming back in the moring and finding a bunch of posts from last night can be a lot to deal with...and there's always the suspicion that I've overlooked one.
Anyway, it'll be a while before I start a new one and I should have a 'system' in place to cope with things. |
