Honesty Quiz - April 2010 - The Lepton Special
(dedicated to Lepton as the questions should be international, not US/UK oriented)
Display might be mucked up due to the April Fool trick... That should cure itself when the 'trick' is removed.
No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list* (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.
No entry = no points.
Answers provided when entries close. Quizzes usually last for about 3 weeks until entries dry up. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.
* Note that questions 9 and 10 are puzzles which may require some time to solve and may require some careful thought. You may submit answers to questions 1-8 straight away if you wish and send answers for Q9 and 10 at a later time if that's more convenient.
Highlight below to see the questions.
1. Which comet broke up and crashed into Jupiter in 1994? I need the names of both people the comet was named after.
2. Where are the islets of Langerhans (an approximate location is acceptable).
3. What are the two main metals commonly alloyed to make Bronze.
4. Name three different Formula 1 drivers who won an F1 championship any time from 1950 to 1999 inclusive.
5. Name 5 of the 6 mainland provinces of Australia.
6. What is the sum of the first 15 Fibonacci numbers (The first Fibonacci number is 1, not zero).
7. What is Hanny's Voorwerp.
8. How many animals of each species did Moses take on the Ark.
9. Set up a chessboard with just the white pieces in their starting positions. How many different board arrangements can you end up with if you move a single piece twice (obviously counting for each separate piece you can move). You may use a chessboard for this question if you wish.
10. You have an unlimited quantity of coins at your disposal, of the values 50/20/10/5/2/1 (cents/pence, whatever is meaningful). 100 cents is equal to 1 dollar. What is the highest value of coins you can have such that you cannot make exactly 1 dollar with the coins you have selected. (Listing the coins you select may be helpful).
Hopefully, I've adequately worded Q9 and Q10. If I haven't, please PM me...don't discuss the question in the forum.
Good Luck.
Note, after today I won't be back at the computer until the 7th of April so don't be alarmed if I'm not replying to your PMs.

For the coins, you listed them as 50/20/10/5/2/1. Did you intend, instead, 50/25/10/5/2/1 ?
Also, for the chessboard problem, I assume that there are no black pieces on the board to capture or block, and that the moves must be legal chess moves, right? |

You're right...I normally proofread my text and somehow this slipped by. Considering it was typed up a week or two in advance I should have caught it.
I have 9 entries waiting for me this morning. I'll get marking them! |

Honesty Quiz - April 2010 - Answers
Numbers in brackets show the number of correct answers from the entries supplied.
1. Which comet broke up and crashed into Jupiter in 1994? I need the names of both people the comet was named after.
The comet was Shoemaker-Levy 9 (3/11) Hale-Bopp was a popular answer (3 times).
2. Where are the islets of Langerhans (an approximate location is acceptable).
They are regions found in the pancreas (Body was acceptable as an answer) (5/11).
3. What are the two main metals commonly alloyed to make Bronze.
Copper (88%) and Tin (12%) (6/11) Iron and/or Zinc were popular but incorrect guesses.
4. Name three different Formula 1 drivers who won an F1 championship any time from 1950 to 1999 inclusive.
Multiple choices here. (6/11)
5. Name 5 of the 6 mainland provinces of Australia.
Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia and Southern Australia (4/11)
6. What is the sum of the first 15 Fibonacci numbers (The first Fibonacci number is 1, not zero).
1596. I apparently can't count as my original answer counted only the first 14 numbers! (7/11)
7. What is Hanny's Voorwerp.
It is an astronomical object of unknown origin discovered by Hanny Van Arkel while she was participating in the Galaxy Zoo project. It means Hanny's Object. (0/11) I thought someone might know this...ah well...
8. How many animals of each species did Moses take on the Ark.
Zero. Moses was nowhere near any ark, that was Noah. A little April trick that managed to snare a couple of victims. (9/11)
9. Set up a chessboard with just the white pieces in their starting positions. How many different board arrangements can you end up with if you move a single piece twice (obviously counting for each separate piece you can move). You may use a chessboard for this question if you wish.
There are 27 different positions. 16 are from each pawn moved 2 squares then 1 or 1 square then 1. There are 5 positions for each knight to move to, and a final position where one knight moves out then back to its original square. (5/10)
A few people failed because they missed the knight-out knight-back move or counted it twice.
The maximum amount is $1.43 made up of the coins 50, 4*20, 5, 4*2. I used the values of UK currency which seems to have confused those people used to a 25c coin. (7/10)

I guess I got credit for the comet. I forgot the 9 but knew both names. I'm one who double-counted the knights out-and-back positions.
I guess Hanny's Vorweep isn't between DP's legs.
I did lousy. Thank goodness I occasionally listen to Wierd Al.
What about Nunavut? I thought it split from Northern Territory to become its own province about ten years ago. It doesn't matter - I didn't guess the others right. |

I was wondering about Australian Capital Territory myself; that one seems like one that ought to be there.
I also counted knight-out-knight-back twice. D'oh.
And I still object to asking us to identify an unidentified object |

The voortwerp, Jacques Villeneuve (along with Andretti and Schumacher), Victoria, Copper/Tin, and Moses were all on the proverbial tip of my tongue. I guess I mis-counted for the Fibonacci numbers and the Chess question. |

Sam Tuttle. I can't think of a better reason not to be a Yankee.
I can't count, either, adding sixteen fibonacci numbers instead of fifteen. The other five I answered were correct. Using a British driver, no less.
5 seemed a bit poor, but when the best result was 7, not too bad I guess. No ban on Scurra yet, I see. _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.

Australian Capital Territory is a new one to me...and I'm willing to count it but it doesn't seem to affect the score of anyone. (Unless you know better).
Nunavut split from Northern Territories IN CANADA.
As for Hanny's Voorwerp, it seems I did overestimate the astronomical knowledge of the players, however, an answer along the lines of "space object" would have been acceptable.
This month was much tougher (after the comparative easiness of the either/or round last time). May will give you another themed quiz which should be a tad easier than April.
If anyone has a question that they would like to send me via PM (for the bonus question section) please do so. Aim to have the question answered correctly by 50% of the participants if you can. I have 3 questions already and will start to use them from June onwards. |
