Honesty Quiz - June 2010 - Astronomy Free
No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.
No entry = no points.
Answers provided when entries close. Quizzes usually last for about 3 weeks until entries dry up. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.
Questions are below
1. Who wrote the novel "Little Women"?
2. Where would you find a lunula?
3. January 1st 2010 fell on a Friday. When will January 1st next fall on a Monday?
4. What is the volume of a square based pyramid of base length 4 units and height 3 units?
5. In heraldry, what colour is "Gules"?
6. In the board game Diplomacy, you have a single army in Vienna. Assuming no other pieces on the board, how many other supply centres can this army reach in 2 moves? You don't have to list the supply centres but you can if you wish.
7. Which film stars the character Roger "Verbal" Kint?
8. Scurvy is a disease caused by the deficiency of what?
9. What is an apiarist?
10. The White Nile and Blue Nile meet at which city?
Good Luck. |

| Really? I found this to be the easiest one, yet. I was confidant of 6 (well, 5 and a half) when I sent it in. And it turns out I got one ridiculously lucky guess. |

Honesty Quiz - June 2010 - Astronomy Free
Answers...13 entries this time.
1. Who wrote the novel "Little Women"?
Louisa May Alcott. (7/13)
Best answer by far was "Jane Eyre"....a fictional character.
2. Where would you find a lunula?
It's the white crescent at the base of a fingernail. I allowed any reference to "the body" as a correct answer. (8/13)
3. January 1st 2010 fell on a Friday. When will January 1st next fall on a Monday?
The next Monday Jan 1st will be 2018 (9/13)
Some players were confused by the leap years.
4. What is the volume of a square based pyramid of base length 4 units and height 3 units?
The formula is B*B*H/3. This gives us 4*4*3/3 for 16 cubic units. (6/13)
5. In heraldry, what colour is "Gules"?
Red. Favourite answer was "Lions". A tip: Always read the question. (3/13)
6. In the board game Diplomacy, you have a single army in Vienna. Assuming no other pieces on the board, how many other supply centres can this army reach in 2 moves? You don't have to list the supply centres but you can if you wish.
7. Mun, Tri, Ven, Bud, Rum, Ser, War. If you've never played the game then you're not going to get it right...except Jesternl had a wild guess and did get it right. (3/13)
7. Which film stars the character Roger "Verbal" Kint?
The Usual Suspects...character played by Kevin Spacey. (5/13)
8. Scurvy is a disease caused by the deficiency of what?
Vitamin C or Ascorbic acid. (12/13)
9. What is an apiarist?
A beekeeper. (9/13)
10. The White Nile and Blue Nile meet at which city?
Khartoum in Sudan ((4/13). Cairo was a popular but incorrect answer.

Hah! That was my ridiculously lucky guess, too. I was remembering the Islets of Langerhans question from an earlier quiz, so I was just hoping the trend continued.
Which one did Scurra miss? We need more questions that avoid his areas of expertise. |

Perhaps it should be confidential but he's so far ahead...
He's not good at visualising a diplomacy board so he guessed - wrongly.
However it seems he has expertise in every area, and if I set harder questions then it hurts the other players more... |

I totally gambled on Luluna too, with the same reasoning as mentioned before,.. I even went with hand.
I'm beginning to think that Scurra might actually be an alias of Ken Jennings! |

I did get barred from playing Trivial Pursuit et al at college.
But, just so you know (for anyone playing the Perfect 10 game ) I am generally not hot at sport or "popular" music. Although sometimes I do surprise myself by what I discover I can actually remember!
(The other one I lucked out on was the pyramid one. I had a vague recollection that there was a "divide by 3" bit in that formula so gambled on the answer.) _________________

OK. Definitely more math questions, 3iff -- the volume of the pyramid was one of the ones I was quite sure I had right. Sports would be good, too, especially American sports, because I believe Scurra's a Brit.
(BTW, Scurra, In UM's game, I originally had sent the sports hint, but then I saw it was you I was sending the hint to so I changed it. I'm not sure I changed it in time, though.) |

I'm a Brit too...so I know nothing about US sports...
In any case, I'm trying to avoid strong US or UK based questions as they are unfair to the 'other' side and the few non US/UK players.
I have included quite a few maths questions but I don't think Scurra has had too much of a problem with them!
Let's see how you like the July questions...coming soon. |

bah! 6 correct was more than most on this round, but again I had stupid answers.
I'm the guy who missed the scurvy question, because it was so simple I didn't think about it and put D instead of C. And for the January 1, I misread the question to say this year's 1/1 was a Monday, so I worked from there. All that work for naught.
At least I guessed right on Gules. |

I know you were kidding.
I just had a "guest" go at the perfect 10 quiz...don't have time to participate, and got 6 out of 10. So I understand how tricky it is to answer questions with no research.
The tricky part for me is to set questions that the average person here CAN answer. Unsurprisingly, some are better than others (and Scurra is better still).
Missing the easy answer because you didn't read the question properly is what hurts! |

5: Due to RPG DM research of yore, I recalled sanguine as red, so I guessed "skin"; alas, sanguine is a red stain (not a tincture) . Skin is apparently "carnation" .
7: I was sure I din't know this one; I forced a guess for completeness' sake. I came up with "the usual suspects", and it suddenly felt right. High of the round .
8: 3iff's submission reply mentioned he had to look up my answer of ascorbic acid, which kinda me. For me, the scurvy/ascorbic etymological connection is clear; then again, pronunciation in my native tongue is a lot closer.
10: I really really wanted to answer Ohmdurman for this one, but that would have been one transliteration too many to risk. I would have gone with Bahri (the city on the remaining side of the river junction), if only I actually remembered it. _________________

I had the answer as Vitamin C. I had to check your answer so that I didn't make the cardinal error of marking it as wrong when it was right (or vice versa).
The outcry from the affected participant at being unreasonably denied a point would be too terrible to behold.
Meant to add...if anyone gives an unexpected answer to a question, I will do my best to check that the answer is indeed correct (or not), and of course anyone can appeal against any error on my part...not that that has happened as yet (but mentioning it tempts fate!).
I can't know everything...but I'm getting there... |
