Well, call me simple, but I really enjoy this as an absolute amateur.

I've been meaning to get a copy of this picture for a long time, and now I've got round to it. It's one I really like, and I wonder what you thought of it. (GLers in general and also DP and Bambi.)
It was taken by my father in law in Acapulco about... maybe 15 years ago, I think. Bearing in mind this is a low-res image of a scan from a print, I think it still comes out well.

It was taken by focussing on a point about 10m below the diving off point in advance, and then with a warning shout when the diver leapt off, my father in law picked the diver up in the viewfinder and panned downwards to shoot. The result (IMHO) is a clearly focussed shot of the diver in dramatic action, with a dramatic lighting effect, mainly in silhouette, but with just a touch of highlight and colour. The background is lacking in detail but textured, and nicely sets the focus on the diver, with a good contrast. The rock in the bottom right gives a foreground feature that provides an indication of motion in the shot, while retaining the clarity of the diver himself.
Is this a good appraisal, or are there other critical considerations, do you think?

PS, has the "through her eyes" blog slowed down for new material on purpose, or is it just being busy that stops us getting more Bambi treats?

Laughing nay! I can fall off the floor just watching someone leaning out of an upstairs window.

I have no idea who it is. Which also makes me wonder what the implications are of putting the pic up on the internet/anywhere else. Does whoever that is have any rights over the image, commercial or otherwise?

As long as there isn't a name associated with the picture, I don't believe there is any legal problems with showing it. The photographer holds the rights, not the subject.

And I agree, it is a very nice picture of something that is hard to capture.

I'm with DF. I find it quite captivating. Is the effect done with a filter, Photoshop, or were you actually trapped under the ice in a nearby pond?

Just dazzling, DP. I find myself wondering if you live in a more interesting and more beautiful world than I do, or if I am just oblivious to the things around me. I'm sure it is some of both.

What surprises me is that many of the photos are of quite ordinary situations. Situations that people probably witness practically every day and forget instantly. You have a real gift for seeing the beauty and symmetry surrounding us, that most of us are completely unaware of, and capturing that instant for all to see. After seeing this collection I'm inspired to see beauty in even the humdrum objects around me even as I type, and even on the keyboard itself. I only wish I could sustain it, but realistically, and regretfully, I fully expect to be overtaken by the maddening grind that keeps me running like the red Queen, just to stand still.
Nevertheless. Thank you for that brief excursion into what must be a wonderful way to view our world.

DP, I d like to use this photo of yours as a bg for a slideshow I am creating for Math SAT prep class at a local HS. Can I use it?

I know its not very mathy, so if you have a better suggestion, I m open; I just didn t have the time to go through all your photos and find the best one.

Anyway, feel free to suggest other photos or just turn me down flat. Revenge most foul!
thanks!

Into the light by Art Rock (Hennie), on Flickr

Strange how things go. I shot this scene a few weeks ago on a foggy day in the park near our home. I was not sure whether it was good enough to share on the web, but in the end I posted it to Flickr last weekend. It exploded on me, rapidly collecting dozens of faves from fellow Flickrites, and even becoming my 52nd shot in total (but only my 2nd of the year) to reach Flickr Explore, the 500 most interesting photographs of the day.
