Honesty Quiz - December 2010 - Pictures - Final quiz of the year.

No research is allowed after seeing the questions. They must be answered solely with the information currently in your head.
No internet, books or consulting other people...or 'accidentally' seeing information.
One point per correct answer with no penalty for incorrect or unanswered questions. If you don't know an answer, it's worth guessing. I will accept ONLY your first answer list (send to me via PM). Spelling accuracy is not required for person names. You may freely use pen, paper and simple (non-programmable) calculators.

No entry = no points.

Answers provided when entries close. Due to being the last quiz of the year, I shall be closing entries by about the 15th of December. I shall warn players a few days before I provide answers.

This month, the questions are based on pictures. These can be viewed in one big page at... http://www.zag.net/quiz
The individual pictures are cunningly titled Q1.jpg, Q2.jpg and so on, as in...
http://www.zag.net/quiz/Q1.jpg
through
http://www.zag.net/quiz/Q10.jpg
Note that it's a UNIX server, so those URL's are case-sensitive after the domain.

Very many thanks to Zag for providing the hosting.

Each question has a supplemental question (+). Answering these extra questions is entirely voluntary. They will count towards your total score if you supply answers (but not to the best 6 scores category). The supplementary questions are likely to be harder than the main question for each picture and generally require that you know the answer to the main question.

Q1. Who painted this? (+) What is its title?

Q2. What is the name of this band? (+) Name one of their albums.

Q3. Name the righthand lower bone. (+) Name the lefthand lower bone.

Q4. Name the film. (+) Name the director of that film.

Q5. In which building is this artwork to be found? (+) Who painted it?

Q6. Who produced this cartoon strip? (+) What is the name of the yellow bird?

Q7. Who is the person on the right in the black T shirt (indicated by a crudely drawn yellow arrow)? (+) In that TV program, who is his sworn enemy (the character name of that person)?

Q8. On this outline map of Japan, which of the seven red dots indicates the location Hiroshima? (+) On which date in 1945 was the atomic bomb dropped on that city? (I will allow plus/minus 1 day)

Q9. What is the name of this distinctive moon that orbits Saturn? (+) What is the name of the crater (named after the person who discovered this moon)?

Q10. What is the name of this person? (+) What was his nickname?

Good Luck.

By the way, if you would let me know if you like the picture quiz as an occasional variation to just text questions. Pictures are great for posing some questions that are otherwise difficult/impossible to present, but if they're universally disliked then I won't use them again.

This was fun! I was looking at the November quiz and actually was waiting for December. I like the pictures, it adds a little something since pictures evoke a lot of memories and gets the ole grey matter churning for me. Felicitous

I liked the picture quiz, too. I'm not sure I'd want all of them to be that way, but the variety is good. (But I was sad to see no geometry questions. Felicitous )

Hmmm. Did I mention how much I dislike picture questions? Revenge most foul! Not that I object to them in general, especailly when they are as nicely varied as this set was.

I was amused that I knew one of the supplementaries without knowing the "proper" answer though.

Answers

Honesty Quiz - December 2010 - Pictures - Final quiz of the year.

Once again, very many thanks to Zag for providing the hosting.

There were 18 entries this month. Numbers in brackets indicate the number of correct answers.

Q1. Who painted this? (+) What is its title?
Vincent Van Gogh (15)
Starry Night (14)

Q2. What is the name of this band? (+) Name one of their albums.
Green Day (9)
Dookie and American Idiot were two of their many albums. Others are available. (8)

Q3. Name the righthand lower bone. (+) Name the lefthand lower bone.
Tibia (15)
Fibula (15)

Q4. Name the film. (+) Name the director of that film.
The Shining (12)
Stanley Kubrick (11)

Q5. In which building is this artwork to be found? (+) Who painted it?
The Sistine Chapel in Rome (18)
Michelangelo (17) (one solitary vote for Da Vinci spoiled a 100% answer record.)

Q6. Who produced this cartoon strip? (+) What is the name of the yellow bird?
It's "Peanuts" by Charles M Shulz (16)
Woodstock (15)

Q7. Who is the person on the right in the black T shirt (indicated by a crudely drawn yellow arrow)? (+) In that TV program, who is his sworn enemy (the character name of that person)?
Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek:TNG/Ensign Crusher fame) playing 'himself' in "The Big Bang Theory" (11)
Dr Sheldon Cooper (8)

Q8. On this outline map of Japan, which of the seven red dots indicates the location Hiroshima? (+) On which date in 1945 was the atomic bomb dropped on that city? (I will allow plus/minus 1 day)
Red dot 2 (7) The other dots were scattered around the map and do not necessarily represent city locations.
6th August 1945 (8)

Q9. What is the name of this distinctive moon that orbits Saturn? (+) What is the name of the crater (named after the person who discovered this moon)?
Mimas (1)
William Herschel (2)
The moon Iapetus is surprisingly remarkably similar. Definitely the hardest question this month however one player managed to guess the discoverer even though they didn't know the name of the moon.

Q10. What is the name of this person? (+) What was his nickname?
Oliver Hardy (one half of the Laurel and Hardy comedy duo) (14)
"Babe" (2)
Other offers were Charlie Chaplin and Abbott (of Abbott and Costello) as well as Stan Laurel

Many thanks 3iff for running a fun quiz. My New Year Resolution is to go out and actually learn useful stuff instead of random trivia.
I can't decide if knowing that moon of Saturn one but not recognising a still from Big Bang Theory is good or bad...

Was I the only person who guessed answered Iapetus? I was certain that's what it was due to the huge crater.

Termital also mentioned Iapetus but essentially had 2 guesses at the moon name and both were wrong.

I did think more would get this right...I was badly wrong. Only Scurra got Mimas and apparently he's ashamed at doing so...

Puzzlescot got the crater name right but not the name of the moon... Not exactly sure how that happened.

Thanks for the game! Well done - I hope there's another next year..

Herschel was an educated guess - he discovered quite a few distant objects, yet I couldn't remember who else had also done so.

I gave the nick-name ("The death star moon") as I couldn't remember it's real name (nasa)

What's good information to know, and what's bad? It's all called trivia. Knowing who's married to whom in Hollywood is definitely bad, but knowing what to put on a wasp sting is definitely good. Way too much of the former is needed just to be good at pub quizes, so I opt not to pollute my mind.

Then again, if you're in the hot seat with £1m at stake, it just be worth knowing who was married to Henry II !

In the meantime, I don't mind a bit of monthly fun. Have a great Christmas and new year all...
