Informative, kinda simple but not overly simplistic, and non-hysterical summary of nuclear situation in Japan:

An interesting, perhaps prophetic, nearly 7 year old article from The Japan Times, Japan's deadly game of nuclear roulette

Quote:
After visiting the center a few kilometers from Hamaoka, I realized that Japan has no real nuclear-disaster plan in the event that an earthquake damaged a reactor's water-cooling system and triggered a reactor meltdown.

Additionally, but not even mentioned by ERC officials, there is an extreme danger of an earthquake causing a loss of water coolant in the pools where spent fuel rods are kept. As reported last year in the journal Science and Global Security, based on a 2001 study by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, if the heat-removing function of those pools is seriously compromised -- by, for example, the water in them draining out -- and the fuel rods heat up enough to combust, the radiation inside them will then be released into the atmosphere. This may create a nuclear disaster even greater than Chernobyl.

I did some calculating, for fun. The recent news that they're going to dump 11.5 thousand tons of "radioactive water" into the Pacific works out to the equivalent of 1 drop of the same "radioactive water" dumped into over a thousand Olympic size swimming pools (1 drop in 689,592,786 gallons).

Ahh! But this is just the thin edge of the wedge.
What happens when 689,592,786 Nuclear Plants decide the same thing.
That's one drop in every gallon of water in the planet.
Do you want to live in that kind of world? I know I don't.
And don't give me that, "There aren't that many plants in existence" line. We all know that's only because people like me are willing to resist. The sooner we go back to the African Savannah and eat roots and berries, the better the world will be.

It's comforting to know that we have a nuclear plant for every 10 people on the planet.
Yes, I saw your spoiler text : - P

Jack_Ian, besides hyperbole, what was the point of your post? Are you saying that they shouldn't have dumped the water. Their alternative was to risk the reactors overheating and releasing a ton more radioactivity than that, actually dangerous levels. It's not as if they took lightly the decision to release the water.

Or are you arguing that we should get rid of all nuclear power? Have you got an alternative to suggest? The only other way to get the quantity of energy we are talking about is from fossil fuels, and they are way more destructive to the environment. No other energy source is even in the ballpark, yet.

My solution was written in the spoiler text.
Wow! I must appear dumber than I thought for that post to be considered, in any way, as serious. Note-to-self: Appear more like DM and get some respect around here.
