Man, I want badly for the 3DS to get some actual support. Though, having not purchased one yet, I won't be screwed if it doesn't.

What I've heard from 3DS owners is that they got headaches the first day they played it, but they haven't had any headaches since.

I own a 3DS and I haven't gotten any headaches. Of course, since their current lineup is horrible, I haven't been playing it very much.

Oh damn, guys, Nintendo finally announced the 3DS's killer app:

LUIGI'S. MANSION. 2.

Truly the potential of 3D gaming has been fully realized. I'd still like some third-party games for 3DS though.

Wii U.

Nintendo has fired everyone in the company who can come up with a decent name. That is the only explanation.

See, they should've named it the Wi so that this could be the Wii....an opportunity lost D:

Also, outside of the psp-like streaming on a small screen, and games in which users can have their own personal UI on the controller rather than the main screen, I don't see a huge change in how we interact with games. Like the golf ball on the floor example seems a bit goofy, and holding up a small screen to see things on a big screen is sometimes cool, but also I imagine tiring quickly. They seem to be banking that devs will embrace Augmented Reality style play, and that the "hardcore gamer" demo will now buy a wii cause it's got CARS and BLOOD and GUNS YAY. Sorry that was snarky.

I speculated elsewhere that, assuming the Wii U can handle high-end graphics (becuase as much as they don't matter... they matter to the hard core), Madden's new home would be on the Wii U. For the simple fact that you can choose your plays secretly. This isn't new, the Dreamcast VMUs enabled this back in NFL 2K, but it is a great feature.

Plus, RPGs would love to have stat screens or maps there. Heck, a lot of games would. Any DS owner knows how versatile two screens can be, though now you're locked at the touch screen being the small hand-held one, and the TV screen being the main.

I love the idea of holding up the controller to see more things. That's a great idea too.

But, ultimately, it will come down once again to "will the 3rd party developers figure out how to actually USE it?"

(Do remember, Nintendo did this one before, using the GBA as a controller for the Gamecube.)

Yes, the GBA/Gamecube "prior art" came to my mind immediately - and there were vanishingly few titles that used it, let alone used it well. But when it was used, it was terrific; it was just so ahead of its time that few people understood it.

And the DS has done sterling work in showing how multiple screens can be used to good effect, and now they are ready to move it up to the big time - with the advantage that developers have at least had some experience in using the idea, albeit in a limited form.

Once again, I think Nintendo have dared to step over the line first - I wonder if this time too Sony and MS will be forced to follow, or whether they have ventured into a blind alley.

Here's what I'm worried about: the CineDine Effect.

About two years ago, a CineDine opened up in Omaha, and my wife and I decided to check it out. CineDine is a movie theater/restaurant hybrid; it's a regular movie theater that has seating with long rows of tables like a low diner counter. Waiters come to take your order and when the movie starts, your food is served.

One of my coworkers thought it sounded amazing, because he'd finally be able to kick back and have a beer in a movie theater. In reality, I was underwhelmed because I found it pretty much impossible to focus on a meal and a big screen film at the same time. Eating popcorn is easy...you can stick your hand in the bag and stick the popcorn in your mouth without ever having to take your eyes off the screen. But you need to actually look at your food when a fork and knife are involved, and I found myself missing key visual gags several times as I tried to juggle the watching and the eating.

That's in essence the CineDine effect: it's incredibly difficult to pay attention to something at eye level (the TV screen) and something below you (the controller screen) at the same time. I guess I won't know for sure until I give it a shot.

The controller itself makes me a little nervous. It looks a bit unwieldy. It's funny to me that when the Wii came out, the idea was "a controller with movement is easier then a controller with only buttons!" And then the Kinect came out with the idea that "Yeah? Well no controller is better than any controller at all!" And now we have the WiiU, which tells us "No controller? Ha, completely inferior to a gigantic controller!"

The only thing I've seen from E3 is the Hitman 5 trailer, which looked a lot more like a movie starring Steven Seagal than a stealth game.
