I'm pretty sure the answer to #48 is a pen. "The pen is mightier than the sword!". Ecstatic Happiness
To add my twopence to the chromosome detour, I think it is actually the presence of a Y chromosome that makes a person male, and there does exist a genetic condition where a person has only the X chromosome and no Y or second X (they're female).

Hey Zag, I hope you don't mind that I borrowed a few of these to use in the Pirate Treasure Hunt. If anyone is interested, I can start a new thread (after the event) with the puzzles I used in order.
