Maybe I shouldn't get involved (Reprise), but in my gaming circles you'd be expected to pick the right hand one. If you can't win, play for second. If you can't do that, play for third, so on.
I once threw a game so that I could claim second place rather than joint second. _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.

Think of it this way: If I let Amb get second now, he might not mess with me as much later, and I can get first next time. If I piss off Amb now, then he'll avenge me next game and force me to get last place. _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

That makes sense. This is a very subjective matter. We tend to see as what happens in one game, stays in that game. Once the game is over, clean slate.
it doesn't matter anyway because the score is wrong and you're third either way.
Again, I shouldn't be speaking for anyone else, but I wouldn't have liked your decision if I was in Amb's place. I want my placing (second place in this case) to be earned, not given to me. But all is well what ends well. _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.

Besides, the king making (or 2nd place making) says in this game, right? I don't think people actually live by the idea of a clean slate for the second game. It is important to learn for your mistakes.
Also, make sure you stay on good terms with the good looking girls or your significant other. |

What I meant with clean slate is that going against someone just because they hurt you in a previous game is considered poor form. Of course, my actions are going to influence future games in game like Diplomacy, for instance, where I need to stay looking honest, which is hard to do if I broke many deals for no reason.
But (again as seen in my gaming circles), if you throw an attack towards my position, you better have a better reason than "you hurt me in our previous game". Furthermore, always as I see things, causing you to end third so that I can end second should not be considered an unmotivated attack. This is an interesting topic, but maybe should be discussed in a thread of its own, as this one is about Roll-It.
Let's imagine this situation in which Mr.Grey has the last meaningful turn of a 3-player game, and has to pick between two options. Option A ends up as a win for Mr.Black, second place for Mr.White, and last for Mr.Grey, while second B makes Mr.White the winner, Mr.Grey second, and Mr.Black third. Which one should Mr.Grey do? _________________ Jan 21st, 2008: The pillaging continues.

referee, you make some good points. Now let me say this:
Suppose Amb and I play a four-player game of Rolit, and Amb has two options that are equally good to him, but one of them hurts me, and the other hurts a third guy. Which one should he choose? Which one do I want him to choose? _________________ My logic puzzle blog |
