Apologies Antrax. You did get it right too (and you were credited with a point). I'll amend the post.

Trying to juggle 2 games I'm running, get questions for round 3 and do work too...

Sent. These seemed tougher.

Looks like I got 7 right. The sad part is I changed an answer that I had from right to wrong (even after recently reading a book with a chapter about how changing your original answer on a test is usually is the wrong thing to do.)

Totally sure - 4
Pretty sure - 2
That sorta rings a bell - 1
Pulled out of a hat - 3

I knew six this time, totally guessed on two, and had a quick "I think it's..." on two. I nearly changed my answers on both of those, but remembered having heard the advice to go with your first feeling. Foolishly, I did change one of my wild guesses - it wasn't based on a feeling - or I would have had 9 right.

Olympiad Round 2

We tore through this round. I expect the game will speed up from now...assuming I can manufacture enough questions.

1. How many stars on on the flag of Australia.
a. none
b. 2
c. 4
d. 6

Mostly correct answers for this one, tricky though.

2. The 1974 album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" was by.
a. Cream
b. Emerson, Lake and Palmer
c. Genesis
d. Pink Floyd

Cream and ELP were popular, but wrong, answers.

3. Which is the largest (by surface area) of the US great lakes.
a. Erie
b. Huron
c. Michigan
d. Ontario
e. Superior

Three players caught out by this.

4. Porcine applies to which type of animal.
a. Chicken
b. Parrot
c. Pig
d. Worm

Three got this wrong.

5. The Ishihara test is used to diagnose what.
a. Arthritis
b. Brittle bones
c. Colour blindness
d. Diabetes

Just one wrong answer.

6. What is the name of Bruce Wayne's butler
a. Alfred
b. Arthur
c. Edgar
d. Henry

An easy question for a change. No errors here.

7. When was the last major eruption of Mt Vesuvius (it's in Italy).
a. 1865
b. 1928
c. 1944
d. 1964

Just one right answer by a player who watched a TV program just a few days earlier...lucky.
This eruption disrupted the allies in the invasion of Italy during WW2.

8. The US Masters golf tournament is always held where.
a. Augusta, Georgia
b. Bethesda, Maryland
c. Farmingdale, New York
d. Pebble Beach, California

A few wrong answers.

9. Which of the following stars is MORE than 10 light years away from the sun.
a. Barnard's star
b. Fomalhaut
c. Ross 154
d. Sirius

Fomalhaut is 25 light years away. Just 5 players got this right.

10. Who wrote "Little Women"
a. Louisa May Alcott
b. Jane Austen
c. Emily Bronte
d. George Eliot

Two wrong answers.

Scores

9 Quailman
8 j_s*, Scurra, Zag
7 Suspence, jesternl, Duke Gnome, Sentran
6 Milkshake, Antrax, Lexprod, dethwing, MNOWAX, referee
=========================================
4 MatthewV

A massive group on 6 points and it's a bit harsh to eliminate all those at the same time so they survive to round 3.
Expect the questions to get a bit harder from now on. Round 3 will follow soon.

I haven't yet intentionally made questions harder...just the luck of the draw I think.

MatthewV went from 9 to 4 in the first 2 rounds
Quailman went from 5 to 9 with the same questions.
Scurra seems to like 8's

I won't know the damage until all the answers are in...

Just waiting for jesternl and Lexprod who promise entries late Monday, and Milkshake who's not said anything yet. Players have until Wednesday to get answers in (but I'm not going to be a clockwatcher).

For info, average scores

Round 1: 5.74 points
Round 2: 6.73 points
Round 3: 5.64 points (so far)

Perhaps round 2 was just a bit easy in comparison.

Olympiad Round 3

1. Who was the star of the 1926 silent film "The General"?
a. Charlie Chaplin
b. Douglas Fairbanks
c. Buster Keaton
d. Harold Lloyd

Only 5 right answers. I expected a higher score.

2. An object is dropped from the top of the Empire State building (call it 1250ft/381m). Ingoring air resistance, how long would it take to hit the ground?
a. 6.3 seconds
b. 8.8 seconds
c. 12.8 seconds
d. 16.1 seconds

One player impeccably calculated the answer, complained none of my answers were right and caused me to double-check my calculations. Fortunately for me I was right. Had they remembered the correct formula it would have helped.

3. From Greek mythology, who went into the labyrinth to successfully kill the minotaur?
a. Dionysus
b. Heracles
c. Perseus
d. Theseus

According to one player, anyone who didn't know this should be eliminated (on the spot)...but both culprits made it to round 4.

4. Who composed the Planets suite?
a. Britten
b. Elgar
c. Holst
d. Stravinski

5. Which of these colours does NOT appear on the flag of Jamaica?
a. Black
b. Green
c. White
d. Yellow

An 'easy?' question that three got wrong.

6. Table mountain overlooks which city?
a. Capetown
b. Mexico City
c. Nairobi
d. Rio de Janiero

Lots of players expected the view from Table mountain to be Mexico City. I'd advise that you don't go sightseeing with them.

7. Trabzonspor are a football (soccer) team from which country?
a. Hungary
b. Poland
c. Turkey
d. Ukraine

Three right answers. I expected a low score here...

8. Which one of the following are high-level clouds?
a. Altostratus
b. Cirrus
c. Cumulus
d. Stratus

Just over half got this. Altostratus caught a few players out.

9. What is the densest element of the four listed here?
a. Iridium
b. Lead
c. Osmium
d. Platinum

Only 3 correct answers. One player raised the question about 'it depends what form it's in' quoting that ozone and oxygen are the same substance in a different structure (valid) and then chose the lightest of the options (lead).

10. The king cobra (the world's longest venomous snake) is native to which region?
a. Africa
b. Australia
c. Europe
d. Southeast Asia

50-50 for this. Lots of Africa and one Australia.

Average score for the round was 5.43...the toughest so far.

Scores

8 Scurra
7 Antrax
6 Sentran, dethwing, Duke Gnome, referee
5 Milkshake, Lexprod, MNOWAX, Suspence, j_s*

=====================================================
4 Zag, jesternl, Quailman

Scurra continues with yet another 8 while we lose some big names, Zag scored 8 and Quailman 9 last time. Proves that a big score counts for nothing in a subsequent round. With 5 players on 5 points, they all ensure their survival.

Olympiad Round 4 Answers

1. Green Bay Packers (the American football team) come from which state?
a. Illinois
b. Michigan
c. Nebraska
d. Wisconsin

Only two wrong answers. I actually regard this as a geography question not a sport question...

2. The Maldive Islands are found in which body of water?
a. Atlantic Ocean
b. Coral Sea
c. Indian Ocean
d. Pacific Ocean

3. In 1932, Al Capone was improsioned for which crime?
a. Bootlegging
b. Murder
c. Racketeering
d. Tax Evasion

One wrong answer (racketeering).

4. How many permanent teeth does an adult human have.
a. 26
b. 28
c. 30
d. 32
e. 34

Two wrong answers.

5. The creature Drosophila melanogaster is commonly known as what?
a. Dung Beetle
b. Fruit fly
c. Honeybee
d. Locust

Only 4 right answers. I thought this would have scored much higher.

6. What has the chemical formula C6H6?
a. Benzene
b. Hexane
c. Propane
d. Styrene

Only 2 right answers. Not many organic chemists out there. I sneakily included hexane C6H14 and that seemed to catch a lot of answers.

7. The 1994 film "The Mask" starring Jim Carrey had who as the female lead?
a. Courtney Cox
b. Claire Danes
c. Cameron Diaz
d. Stella Stevens

Two wrong answers.

8. The Ides of March 44BC was when Caesar was killed. On what day in March does the Ides of March occur?
a. 1st
b. 9th
c. 15th
d. 20th
e. 30th

Three wrong answers

9. Laundry marks on clothes. What does a circle with a cross through it mean?
a. Do not bleach
b. Do not dry clean
c. Do not spin dry
d. None of the above

About 50-50 here. It's probably something most people never look at anyway.

10. From which language does the word SAFARI originate?
a. Afrikaans
b. Igbo
c. Swahili
d. Zulu

Another 50-50

9 MNOWAX
8 Antrax, Suspence (who figured on getting 3-4)
7 Lexprod
6 j_s*, Scurra
5 Sentran, Duke Gnome, referee
----------------------------------
4 milkshake, dethwing

The last entry (milkshake) reprieved the players on 5 points. A stunning performance from MNOWAX and a drop in form for Scurra. Suspence was looking at an early exit but most of his guesses worked out well. However, it's now round 5 they have to negotiate.

Average score of 6.1 so easier than round 3...or perhaps just better guesses.

If you haven't qualified from round 4 then you cannot participate in the game.

DEADLINE is 12.00 midday Wednesday 14th September, UK time. I shall close the round once I have all the answers in. If you need an extension of the deadline then please let me know.

Funny that I should be elimated this round, since I was sure on four questions- pretty much tied for the most I had ever been sure of. I just got the rest that I wasn't sure of all wrong! My correct guessing skills ran out.

You're welcome, the three I "saved." Wink GLHF

Happy to still be here.

I was only sure of the Packers, Cameron Diaz, and the Ides of March.

I felt OK about Capone's tax evasion, 32 teeth (though I was tempted to count my own, not sure if that counted as "research"), do not dry, and fruit fly, and I got all 4 right.

Maldives was a complete guess.
