Was trying to make something better out of this idea, but it didn't pan out.

A good start. I won't say too much, but you should be able to eliminate a few options in one clue, and identify a wrong answer to another pretty easily.

| Words are mostly in alphabetical order; imminent is NEAR, NEXT, or NIGH; BONE is wrong (SHIN?) |

You do this before you sew (4) If this is supposed to be REAP, that comes after sowing, not before sewing. |

Pick the right word for "Imminent", and you should be on your way.

It still needs to be sow, not sew.
I've combined the words phonetically into two Tom Cruise movies, and I assume he's the answer. (I noticed everything was one syllable and started trying to put stuff together that way.)
Miss Shin/Imp Hoss Sip Bull = Mission Impossible
My Nor Eh Tea/Reap Port =Minority Report
I'm looking for what TANNED WRIT and the mystery one go to.
Edit: redid the phonetics a bit to work better
Edit Edit: The last is probably Knight and Day = Nigh Tanned ???, with writ needing to be fixed.

LOL. I thought of that, but didn't want to suggest you had made two errors on the same word (spelling 'sow' and getting the aphorism backwards).
