Are you scientifically literate?

Courtesy of CSM. I was quite surprised by how tough it was. I got 36 out of 50. Not a great score, but I've never been much of a scientist. I'm sure most people here will easily eclipse that.

The age of the earth question was tricky considering the source of the quiz...

37/50. Also, apparently you don't need to know much about science if you know Greek. Wink

44/50. Those bio questions just killed me.

Jedo: I was just about to point out that Young-Earth Creationism is not the mainstream, and is in fact fairly rare, but wikipedia tells me that about 40-50% of US adults hold those beliefs. Now I'm just depressed.

I got 41 right. I got some of them by eliminating the other three. I would have done worse if it hadn't been multiple choice.

43/50, including one random guess that was right (one of the which greek letter questions), and few educated guesses that were right

42 for me. After an early shaky start things improved once it started asking questions that weren't actually about science (the epithet of Athena, for instance.) Revenge most foul!

I got almost all of the names incorrect. I guess I don't know science history very well. I also wasn't very good at counting all the way to 8. I think that had something to do with watching Venture Brothers while taking this quiz.
So I got just 39 correct. Hurray for being a person who memorizes very, very little.

Btw, there was one a bit confusing question about planets. Is Pluto thought to be a planet now? I read the recent researches where it is out of the planet "pack".
My result is 42/50.

I talked myself out of quark as an answer to that one question, because it said "elementary" which made me think of the elements, and everything besides atom was a subatomic particle. It seemed a bit late to come up with the term atom, but I wrongly went with it.

I'm with you on the multiple choice thing. I definitely needed to use the process of elimination of some of these.

48 out of 50. The two I missed: which planet is tied with Mercury for lowest surface gravity, and who was the physical constant h named after.

for the original quiz, I got 42/50 correct. Many questions followed the Jeopardy method of inquiry where you get multiple hints at the answer, even if you wouldn't have known the answer asked only one way.

There were a few that I answered incorrectly that I really should have gotten correct had I been paying any attention at all. Nanometers & centimeters, for example, I got wrong because I started out converting to the closest in the set of three (millimeters) and then forgot to do the extra power of 10.

Like RSA and others said, a lot of it was educated guesses that work because it's multiple choice. e.g. [I knew that there was such a thing as Planck's constant, so I chose him for that question based solely on that knowledge. had you asked me what his constant was, I would have been completely out of my depth.]

87% on the second one. I'm terrible at pattern recognition with multiple elements. i.e. all of those ones where each figure had multiple circles/triangles/squares/exes were complete stabs in the dark.

96%, and it also said in the evaluation that I love indie rock (after I said I don't in the first question). I'm not sure why that part was in there -- maybe it was all a very clever ruse to get us to click the link.

I was skeptical about the quiz because of the indie rock opening question. But the tests on the site pleasant versions of standard tests.

87% isn't bad, except here, on this forum, so I find your two consecutive sentences hilarious together (it reads "I got an 87. I m so bad at this.")

I also got 87%. I got 35/40 on the other one (with a few that should have been right, but then i second guessed myself.)

Got kind of suspicious about all the 87%s and took it again but answered only A and got 1%, so I guess it's just a coincidence.

i took the science test, and i think i did well for 30/50.

Keep in mind I have no college degree, and had ZERO chemistry and physics in high school, and only have a background in math that was of my own choosing ( i didn't take too many classes, but i loved the subject enough to pursue it on my own).

I'm not saying I'm bad at the quiz overall, just one particular brand of pattern. Also, I'm convinced that on many of these, were they open-ended rather than multiple choice, could have had multiple answers. I hate those kinds of questions when they expect you to pick the "right" answer.

I suspect it may give out high scores on purpose to trick people into loving indie rock. As it stands, I love Katy Perry.

42/50. I don't think I guessed right on any, even when I was sure it was one of two answers. Though I was 'sure' it was one of two for the catalytic converter, but it wasn't.
