Correct; well solved everybody. Revenge most foul!

Here are explanations for all the clues:

First level:
1. Aquatic bird or Verdi composition.
DIVER, aquatic bird and anagram of Verdi

2. Princess without offspring prepares mating rituals.
DISPLAYS, mating rituals and DI (princess) + SP (sine prole) + LAYS (prepares)

3. Strong desire for cutting edge charged matter succeeding before noon.
AMBITION, strong desire and AM (before noon) + BIT (cutting edge) + ION (charged matter)

4. Green trait suggests falling back.
RETREATING, falling back and anagram of green trait

5. Using wednesday and thursday to grasp my subject.
WITH, using and W (wednesday) + I (subject form of my) + TH (thursday)

6. Reverse engineer fifty small women.
GIRLS, women and GIR (reverse of rig) + L (fifty) + S (small)

7. Acting in secret, you are wrapping cord, even uncoiled.
UNDERCOVER, acting in secret and U R around anagram of cord even

8. Large yankee follows urgent medical scan without delay.
DIRECTLY, without delay and DIRE (urgent) + CT (medical scan) + L (large) + Y (yankee)

9. Trustworthy persons corrupted and spewing bile.
RESPONSIBLE, trustworthy and anagram of persons + anagram of bile

10. Supporting feminine olympic record.
FOR, supporting and F (feminine) + OR (olympic record)

11. Welcoming good game spanning entire generation.
GREETING, welcoming and GG (good game) around anagram of entire

12. Access route for heart of mine.
IN, access route and heart of mINe

13. Reverse the initial coffin substitute.
TURN, reverse and T (the initial) + URN (alternative to a coffin)

Second level:
Diver displays ambition.
DRIVE, ambition and anagram of diver

Retreating with girls undercover directly.
RIGHT, directly and hidden in reverse in "with girls"

Responsible for greeting in turn.
BEHIND, responsible for and HI (greeting) inside BEND (turn)

Third level:
Drive right behind!
DRAFT = D (drive) + R (right) + AFT (behind)

Displays was obviously the mating rituals, and I had Di from the start, and lays made sense, but I never in a million years would have gotten the SP.

Once again, a great bunch of clues (though too hard for me) and a really nice &lit at the end. Thanks for the nice summary, too!

Yeah, that one was pretty hard I guess. "Without offspring" created such a nice surface reading that I had to use it. And you could always backsolve it. Revenge most foul! If it's any consolation, I probably spend more time making these than you guys spend solving them.

Still, the rate-limiting factor for these are really the inner &lit clues. It's very hard to construct those clues in any kind of systematic way. On the other hand, that is also why it's rewarding to discover one.

Indeed. I usually start with an intended wordplay and look for variations that make up a valid definition. That's how I constructed "Heartless misters", for example. I don't see how that would work for "Drive right behind" though, which makes it a particularly nice clue.

EDIT: &lit; clues using initial letters are pretty easy to construct systematically, but frankly such clues feel less satisfying to me. Like hidden words, I do like them in a larger set of clues to keep people on their toes.

I'm not 100% certain this would really qualify as a &lit clue, but if it does, it's my favourite one ever!

If it's what I think it is then I like it, but it's not &lit. It would be perfectly acceptable in the UK as a 'cryptic definition' but wouldn't satisfy the criteria used in the US (or on GL.)
