Card 15 is the last doubler, so the game is over.
| Code: |
1. Referee: 7-5+1+2 Money: 8, 20, 25
2. MatthewV: 8+5 Money: 1, 15, 20
3. Lexprod: 4 Money: 1, 2, 25
4. Scurra: 10 Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 20, 25
5. Zag: 2x(3) Money: 1, 6, 20, 25
|
With 28 dollars left, Lexprod is the loser.
MattV with, second least money, is your victor at 13 points.
Good game everyone, thanks for playing. |

Good game everyone. I think my coin toss was worth the gamble even though I lost it.
Like one of Reiner Knizia's other classics, Ra (one of my favourite games), this is far more of a gambling game than an auction game, especially in this forum version where everyone's status can be seen at a glance and analysed. _________________

| Oh and I curious what Scurra would have done if I was Zag when the 10 came up. I would have bid 45. |

MattV was sort of right, Scurra, that you should have bid on it, but that wouldn't have made any difference because I would have outbid your only correct bid. It was correct strategy for you to bid $3, but no more. Here is where we were:
| Code: |
1. Referee: 7-5+1+2 Money: 8, 20, 25
2. MatthewV: 8+5 Money: 1, 15, 20
3. Lexprod: 4 Money: 1, 2, 25
4. Scurra: Money: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 15, 20, 25
5. Zag: 2x( ) Money: 1, 4, 6, 20, 25
Cards remaining:
Points: 9, 10
Doubler
|
Round 13: Point card: 3
You can win any one card by bidding 27, since no one else can bid past that without dropping below lexie for the auto-lose. You have to make sure that you retain at least 29 to also stay out of the poor house, but that leaves you with 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 15, 20 to work with. As long as you hang on to (2, 12, 15) and (20, 6, 1) to buy the 9 and 10 if they come up, you will win if they both do. So you can bid $3 safely for the 3 point card, since it would leave you enough still to buy both remaining high cards. I would have bid 4 over it, anyway, though, so the outcome would have been the same.
If you bid more than that, then you can't guarantee getting both the 9 and the 10 if they are both available. The last three cards could have fallen in 6 possible arrangements:
D, 10, 9 MattV wins no matter what
D, 9, 10 MattV wins no matter what
9, D, 10 MattV wins no matter what
9, 10, D You win if you pass the 3, I win if you take it.
10, 9, D You win if you pass the 3, I win if you take it.
10, D, 9 You win if you take the 3, MattV wins if you let me take it
It turns out that the last situation is what actually happened, but hindsight is always 20/20. You made the right percentage play (to let me take the 3), except that you should have bid your $3 card in the hopes that I hadn't worked it all out and foolishly let you have it.

Anyway, thanks, dethwing, for running the game. It was more fun and interesting than I expected it to be. |

What would be the point of that? It would just give me the auto-lose for having the least money left. Rather than intentional kingmaking, I had decided to play for the best position I could, even though I had no chance of winning. |

Well, I think I knew you (Zag) would bid 4 for the three, so it seemed silly to do anything really. I had missed the tiebreak scenario, but it still seemed better for me to play for the 9,10 instead and hope that none of the other players wanted to commit suicide, and so I had already concluded that 3 was the highest I could go.
That's why I thought Lex should perhaps have bid 25 for the fire: it would have pretty much finished me off regardless of what then came out without affecting Lex's position in the slightest...
For such simple games, both this and For Sale! are distressingly clever. If I ever come up with a game that is twice as complex and half as good I'll be happy. _________________

See, the position of Scurra doesn't change if he passes and lets your bid of 45 stand. It is in his best interest to win it. It doesn't matter that passing would cause you to do worse-- you doing worse bears absolutely no benefit on him!
But by winning the bid at any cost (assuming he stays above lexprod) will improve his position.
And so if he did that, you would be able to win if the 9 also came up. But hey, 2nd place is better than 4th, right? |

At the time it was
13 MatthewV
2x3 Zag
5 Referee
0 Scurra
4 lexprod
So when the 10 came up...
If Zag had bid 45 and Scurra had passed, Scurra's position would be the same. If he had bid 46 to take the ten, he would be in 2nd. |

But the question remains... what would Scurra have done in this bind?
(And by the way, this is seriously what I would have done if I had been in Zag's position) |

If Zag had indeed bid 45 then I think that all I would have done was to congratulate MattV on the win.
Because to me, the last coin toss suddenly becomes entirely irrelevant. Either I outbid Zag now (and can't win) or I don't (and can't win.)
So it would seem easier and less stressful for me to simply let Zag suicide, as my final position becomes irrelevant either way (the coin toss gives me 2nd or 4th.)
Now of course Zag has no real way of knowing that I'm not going to care about my final position in that circumstance (other than, perhaps, inferring it from the digression into kingmaking!) so playing for the coin toss instead would indeed seem worthwhile. It would, however, have been a losing play. _________________

If people behaved as they were supposed to, the game wouldn't be very interesting
And the interesting side point, the only way for Zag to win was have you bid more than a certain amount on the 10. And because of this, I felt the only way for Scurra to win was winning the 3 and 10 and beating me on a tiebreaker. |
