Maybe I should explain my intent. I decided to make a puzzle that looks just like a well-known puzzle type, but is something quite different. In this example, it looks exactly like a crypto quiz, but it isn't. Hence the name Cryptoquizn't.

What I wasn't sure of was whether it was fair to give no real clue as to what it really is. Since there are no nibbles yet, I'll assume a little flavor text would have been best. So, while not a cryptoquiz, it is supposed to be mean.

Yep, I had figured most of that out from the title and some trial and error in treating it as a crypto quiz.

They're clearly not anagrams.

I tried checking the military alphabet to see if the final letters of the associated words spelled anything:

Didn't work out, but made a nice idea for another puzzle someday. I've failed to come up with any other bright ideas.

Given the "mean" hint and the fact we're now looking for two words for each clue, I started looking sets of words where the values of the letters of the nonsense words were the mean of the values of the letters in two real words.

For example:

HKGE is 8 11 7 5

Subtracting and adding 3 to each number keeps 8 11 7 5 as the mean, and gives me 5 8 4 2 and 11 14 10 8, or EHDB and KNJH.

Unfortunately, each permutation I tried also lead me to more nonsense words.

Seems like a cool concept, but I doubt it enough real-word solutions to be useful.

I suppose each number could move a different amount, but that seems like a lot of work if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

I've also barked up this tree and found it empty. But using different offsets for each letter should do the trick, I'd say.

You're close to the essence of it.

For example, the clue JEJI is the average of MIKE and GAIL.
If you solved a bunch more and they were also first names, you'd have the category NAMES.

An important note that makes it harder to make the puzzle but easier to solve is that I always pick letters that average out evenly, not halfway between two letters. So, both letters are always an even distance apart. This means that odd letters a,c,e,g... always pair with odd letters. Evens always pair with evens.

Now you still have to solve the words in the puzzle to get the solution category.

Seems like these would be a lot easier to create than to solve. Some basic trial and error hasn't really gotten me anywhere. I think it's gonna require a program to crack this, which means it's beyond me.

It seems likely that EHEMC would lead to words that end in A and E, but not necessarily.

The fourth letter of RKLAP is obviously A. The positioning of the other letters eliminates a few other possibilities, but that still leaves about 350 words to sort through. That's assuming were using Scrabble words, not names, countries, etc.

I guess I triggered something when I mentioned countries, because I decided to give it a try. There are only 12 4-letter countries, so it seemed feasible.
