Yeah, I think that is definitely the gist of the Greek text .... Although it looks like Japanese, it isn't.

I broke down the characters, there are 46 unique ones. I was hoping there would be 26 or less, pointing to a cryptogram, but that is not the case.

I tried to continue with the sounds of each character, but didn't come up with anything useful.

I have nothing to contribute - but it's pretty awesome to have a separate word for "being turned into a cow". Revenge most foul!

Also: Most of the world has a saying that "it's all Greek to me". Apparently, the Greeks have a saying that "it's all Chinese to me".

I think its cool that we have an English word for getting thrown out of a window. I also think it's cool we have a pretentiously long word for using pretentiously long words.

That said, I am at a loss for what to do next on this puzzle.

A fun page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_to_me

Any idea what is up with those 19 consecutive "tu/tsu" characters? Seems like as good a place to start as any.

Here's the first paragraph.

toki!!! pona a. tenpo ni la shina sona e ni:
ni li toki niyon ala li toki pona.

Anyone recognize this?

NB: I wrote the way the Hiragana is pronounced, not how it's Romanized (for instance, in most Hiragana tables it is "ra" but Japanese pronounce it "la", so I wrote "la".)

Probably the first two paragraphs include instructions for how to transliterate certain problematic characters? In any case, I'm off the case for the next couple days. Anyone want to try to figure out Toki Pona?

NB. the -e and -i stuff mean "Trail the vowel off". I suspect i-elo, for instance, really transliterates to welo or yelo. The shi syllable might be si. Have fun!

It definitely seems that all instances of "shi" need to be "si". It appears the "y" needs to change as well, but I'm not sure to what yet.

toki - language
pona - simplicity
a - ah
tenpo - time
ni - this
la - it's said
sina - you your
sona - wisdom
e - such
ni - this
ni - this
li - is
toki - language
niyon - niyon
ala - no
li - is
toki - language
pona - simplicity

If I assume that "niyon" means Japanese, this could say something like "this is not Japanese language, this is Toki Pona". Depending on how you interpret the "no" after "niyon", I suppose it could also say "this is Japanese, not Toki Pona".

Tu = Two

Which makes more sense in the repeated string...

tsu tsu tsu tsu of earth

I have approximately 95% of the words identified and successfully translated. Words have multiple meanings, and I haven't studied the grammar to really make heads or tails of how it is put together.

That said, each piece of text seems to end with a language.

toki tosi = German
toki kanse = French
toki iwisi = Hebrew
toki epanja = Spanish
toki elena = Greek (near the end of the part with the Greek word)
toki sonko = Chinese
toki inu = Inuit
toki lasina = Latin
toki pasi = Pasilingua? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasilingua
toki wensa = Swedish

It looks like each clue is trying to get us to find a word taken from that language.

The first French one is something about a woman who stays in the home who isn't a parent but similar. Two lines equal two words, so maybe AU PAIR?

I believe the Inuit one is referring to an IGLOO, from what I can make out:
jan - person
inu -Eskimo
li - (used to introduce a new verb for the same subject)
pali - build
e - (introduces direct object)
tomo - house
kepeken - using
telo - water
lete - to freeze

The Hebrew one could be something like KOSHER, it talks about food people of doctrine can/can't eat.

The one with the 19 "2"s is Spanish, and includes the word "colorful". The 38th state is COLORADO.

The Swedish one has something about a lot of food. Given the limited Swedish words used in English, I'm guessin SMORGASBORD.

The final one, which is French, appears to be about the good or bad feelings of a group - ESPRIT DE CORPS.

I can't make much of the rest. If I can clean up the translation, I'll post it here to allow others to collaborate.

Just for kicks, call in ARIGATO GOZAIMASU (Arlo Guthrie)

It could be DANKE SCHOEN IN JAPANESE.

ARIGATO GOZAIMASU is right. We got a lot of close-but-no-cigar calls, because lots of teams ignored the "7 9" at the bottom.

I didn't even see the 7 9, but I guess it was easier since we've already made the Woodstock connection. Did you get a lot of DOMO ARIGATO?

That was fun. Nice insight on foreign words/phrases; I wouldn't have found that.

On the crossword, I have the bottom right corners (in some order):

Code:

  EI
MINN**UBS
  DDLEROW
  ORGANZA
  WEARSON

 LUANN
RETD**LSD
  EDTWICE
  RONPAUL
  INNARDS

Dunno how easy it will be to split this up between people.

I think its cool that we have an English word for getting thrown out of a window. I also think it's cool we have a pretentiously long word for using pretentiously long words.

That said, I am at a loss for what to do next on this puzzle.

Do you know what the word for "Phobia of long words" is? Hippopotomonstrosesquipadaliaphobia. I don't care who you are, that's funny Laughing

Yes, among other things.

Finally completed the above. No time to follow the instructions now, maybe later this afternoon.

So:

GLUE BOTH GRIDS BACK TO BACK THEN TAPE ONE END TO THE OTHER WITH A HALF TWIST

The result is a mobius strip.

THEN USE SCISSORS TO CUT ON THE LINE BELOW THIS ANSWER.

Cutting it "below this answer" yields two intertwined loops, one long one containing the top and bottom three rows of both grids, one shorter one containing the middle three rows.

NOW YOU HAVE TWO LOOPS.

Check. As I said, I have two intertwined loops. The shorter one is a mobius strip. The longer one has two full twists.

FIND THE MATCHING LETTERS IN THE MIDDLE ROW OF BOTH LOOPS. NOTE THAT THE SMALLER OF THE LOOPS WILL BE USED TWICE.

I'm struggling to figure out how to apply this rule. The loops are two-sided, intertwined, and twisted, so I'm not exactly sure what to do.

These letters match up: NALJUCARDIZARINLESMA

Maybe slide one of the strips until something more meaningful shows up.

You don't like (non-cryptic) crosswords?

Thanks for pushing on it. I have a few days back and then will be gone again for a bit.

Not especially, though this one had some entertaining clues.

Well, that was quite the procrastination tool.

Here's my work:

A5I = 100*(TriLRD + CLCF mod1000)+ PhD = 317500
A4I = QNAMT + TriLRD*PDPT - 20345 = 4720052
A3I = IHQNAMT - 24*TriLRD - 5*IPEQC [should end in 0, or probably 9 ] = 9999
A2I = 1728*TriLRD + 276 = 4736724
AtoI= [IHQNAMT - IdTEE (possibly-5000) - NRHB(missingdigit) - TriLRD] without trailing 0's
= [IHQNAMT - 12000 - NRHB(missingdigit) - TriLRD] without trailing 0's
= [86438 - 12000 - 4967 - 2741] without 0's = 6673
For purposes of the computation of adjustments to income only, and for no other purpose, the net relativistic hotchpot basis shall have its middlemost digit stricken.
If said basis shall contain an even number of digits before said striking, “middlemost,” for purposes of this clause only, and for no other purpose, shall be defined to mean “first.”
If said basis shall contain an odd number of digits before said striking, it shall be decreased by one, after said striking, but before any further computation.
**If IdTEE> 9,000, they shall be decreased by a further 5,000 for purposes of the computation of adjustments to income only, and for no other purpose.**
IPEQC = 2131
AMT = MT^5 + 14MT^4 + 18MT^3 + 21MT^2 + 7MT + 14 = 26227362
AYRRC = 25000*(floor(GI/250000)+1) = 525000
CLCF= ARP73E - 1 + 2^(sum of first two digits in ARP73E) = 7397 + 1024 = 8421
FF = VREZC append MNFOA [ mod 3100635 if over 40million] = 222181
LKHES = max(VREZC * MNFOA * 3 - USA, 1000) - AYRRC/1000 sans zero = 12004
PhD = |QNAMT - ARP73E| - 74740 = 83438-7398-74740 = 1300
FCDP = TDC + 88 = 80000
AGG = 12 (GL + GG^2) = 118812
AGL = 12 (GG + GL^2) = 121188
GG = 99
Gambling gains are the least whole number of credits greater than the quotient of modified net income over adjusted net income.
In the event that said whole number is non-zero, it shall be further multiplied by 10, then added to the number of letters in the alphabet contained in Section 61 of the Galactic Tax Code (including subsection labels) minus five, then divided by 29.
Under no circumstances shall gambling gains be equal to 112,006. In the event that they are, add 6 to the modified net income, notwithstanding any other provision of law, and recompute gambling gains.
In the event that the gambling gains (inclusive of the instructions in subclause (a) but not of the instructions in subclause (b)) are an even multiple of 5, add 1 to said gambling gains.
GL = min(ANI + MNI + MANI, 100) = 100
HQNAMT = QNAMT + 30 = 83468
GI = A5I + A4I = 5037552
AGI = A4I + AtoI = 4726725
MGI = A5I + A3I = 327499
MAGI = A4I + A3I = 4730051
NetI = A3I + A2I = 4746723
ANI = A3I + AtoI = 16672
MNI = A2I + AtoI = 4743397
MANI = AtoI + A5I = 324173
IdTEE = IgTEE - 8000 = 17000
IHQNAMT = HQNAMT reversed = 86438
MNFOA = | GI mod 1000 - MGI mod 1000| + |GI mod 100 - MGI mod 100| + (MGI mod 10)^2 = 181
NRHB = HQNAMT - 2IdTEE (first digit should = 1/2 of last digit) = 83468 - 34000 = 49468
NAMT = sum of cubes of digits of AMT = 8 + 216 + 8 + 8 + 343 + 27 + 216 + 8 = 834
IgTEE = IsTEE/40 (unless?) = 25000
IsTEE = IpTEE/100 (unless?) = 1000000
PDPT = .5 * (ARP73E - 4000) = .5 * (3398) = 1699
PTO = MAGI - (NetI-ANI if over zero) [should end in zero or probably 9] = 0
PYEBDRT = MNFOA + FF + AGG but maybe changed = 641091

If the amount computed in this subsection does not exceed 750,000, then it shall be recomputed as though the miscellaneous non-farm overhead adjustment were the least multiple of the miscellaneous non-farm overhead adjustment to exceed 300,000.
QNAMT = NAMT palindromized = 83438
RoboTO = PPP + FCDP - PYEBDRT if over 0 = 202
TO = PTO + FF + PPP (minus LKHES?) = 771470
Please remit this amount to the tax authority facility specified by your processing code. Your processing code consists of a facility code, followed by a checksum code, followed by a sorting code. Compute the facility code using the preliminary tax owed on table C1, the checksum code using the allowable gambling losses on table C2, and the sorting code using the allowable gambling gains on table C1.
Along with any tax owed, please remit any robotax owed.
If you engaged in a like-kind hovercopter exchange event, you must deduct the like-kind hovercopter exchange setoff from the tax owed and stand on your head.
TDC = |MAGI -AGI| * 1.5 - 77 + extras??? (75000?) = 79912
Add to the time dilation correction so computed any scaling factor previously required to be deducted.
USA = [100(NetI - MNI) - (MGI + 1)] / 300 = 17
TriLRD = PGGBF + RBSCC = 610 + 2131 = 2741
VREZC = GI mod 100 + [|GI mod 1000 - AGI mod 1000| - |GI mod 10 - AGI mod 10| if over zero] = 222
PPP = 2528*VREZC - 10000000000 * PTO + processing fees? (77?) = 561293

The form at the top then reads CA P1T 771470
and if you "stand on your head" for the last entry (as specified in the instructions) you get CA P1T OL HILL.

Nice job.

Next (and last for the round): The Answers are Somehow Connected by Kai Huang

We'll see how this one goes. Regardless, you've got more than enough to solve the meta for this round.
