So in an effort to allow people to play who don't have as much time, or can't check the forum often during (or not during) work hours, I've alchemized a single submission version of Times to Remember (aka that year guessing game)
It can accommodate any number of players, playing alone. I'd prefer at least 5 players for it to be 'worth' playing, which I don't think will be a problem. If you have friends or loved ones who are not on the site that want to have their own entry, feel free to forward them via pm or w/e. I trust you, even if your opponents won't
The Game:
Once TtR 2 is over, I will gather a set of 10 events that occurred at any point between and including the years 1960 and 2010. Events will not necessarily be evenly distributed throughout the years or decades.
Then I will post all the events in the thread. Each player will then submit via PM or email their "brackets" for each event that comply with the following rules:
1. The total sum of your brackets must be 30 or less. Think of it as having 30 "years" to use among the 10 events, so you could use a 3 year bracket on each, or two each of a 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 bracket, or any other combination. Note that you may use less than 30 total years if you so chose.
2. No bracket can be larger than 5 years. As was seen in the previous games, 6s and 7s are almost impossible to miss with.
3. Brackets must be continuous for each event. You may not chose 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 as one four-year bracket.
4. A bracket is "correct" if any of the years in it are the year of the event, including the extremes. For example, a 4 year bracket of 1928, 1929, 1930, and 1931 would score for an event occurring in 1928.
5. A bracket that is "incorrect" earns the player no points.
6. A "correct" bracket earns points as follows:
| Code: |
(Sum of opponents' brackets that were correct)
+ (6 x Number of incorrect opponents)
= Score |
This point system encourages small brackets, and rewards "harder" questions with more points.
7. The player with the highest total score over the 10 events, wins. Ties are first broken by least years total used, then by highest score for a single question, then by most 1 brackets used. After that it's a dead tie and all tied players win.
Like many single submission games, people are allowed to signal their intention to play early and submit later, but do NOT actively research the answers after seeing the events. In fact I will spoiler the set and ask that once you look at them, you create and send in your answers then to prevent accidental knowledge
Once entries slow I'll post a due date and anyone who would need an extension can talk to me privately. Scoring should take no more than two or three days, just some simple math and a bit of diagramming for your viewing pleasure :-*
So, who's game?

Scoring Example:
| Code: |
Name Bracket Correct? Score
Adam 4 Y 6+1+5+6+5 = 23
Bob 1 N 0 0
Carol 1 Y 4+6+5+6+5 = 26
Dave 5 Y 4+6+1+6+5 = 22
Edith 3 N 0 0
Fred 5 Y 4+6+1+5+6 = 22 |
EVENTS IN SPOILER TEXT BELOW
Please don't look until you're ready to submit.
1. John Lennon says the Beatles are more popular than Jesus
2. First Pac-Man Arcade machine is released
3. An expedition on the RV Knorr is the first to discover the shipwrecked RMS Titanic
4. The Chernobyl disaster strikes Russia
5. Jacqueline Kennedy marries Aristotle Onassis in Greece
6. Pope John Paul II dies
7. Eyjafjallajokull eruptions distrupt European air travel
8. The Church of England votes to allow the ordination of female priests
9. A commission of scientists declare smallpox eradicated
10. Saddam Hussien executed
Remember, your brackets have to sum less than 30 total years, and no single bracket may be over 5 years. Best way to send your answers is to use ctrl+c on that list, then put all the years for each bracket in a list under the event, or list the start and end years. If you violate a bracket rule I'll point it out to you and ask for a fix.

I guess it's submit?
Why is it not formed into the work submition then?
Wait..
commit -> commission
emit -> emission
transmit -> transmission
What is going on here... why has the t made a complete s of itself?
I will play your single submition game. |

So if the question was "Amb was born this year"
and I submitted 1970.
This adds to more than 30 years on its own, even if I shorten it to 2 digits? So I have no clue how to add my brackets together? |

Yikes! There are a couple in this game for which I have absolutely no clue, and a 10-year bracket is still pretty unlikely to be right.
Anyway, my submission will be sent in a few. |

Pretty sure this is just you being "Ambish"....
but for clarity: the sum of years refers to the duration of the bracket, thus 1970 "spans" one year. 1970-1974 spans 5 years. etc. _________________ I'll have a P please... |

Just a reminder, more than once now people have used brackets that take place outside this range. They've of course been notified to correct them, but reposting this rule to prevent future confusion. _________________ I'll have a P please... |

You can see the whole score breakdown of each question on a Google Spreadsheet here.
So congratulations to all! Thanks for participating everyone for playing. Not surprisingly the ranking sorted players by how many questions they got correct as well. Fun to note that almost all 5-year "shots in the dark" missed. And that the two best scorers did not bother to use all 30 years allotted.
I'm quite happy to stop hosting this format now, I hope you all have enjoyed playing it ^_^ My next format is gonna be half tens10n half survivor, probably start it up next week :3 _________________ I'll have a P please... |

Crap! I knew that 1980 was the exact year the World Health Organization declared smallpox eradicated. What I didn't know was this:
The global eradication of smallpox was certified, based on intense verification activities in countries, by a commission of eminent scientists on 9 December 1979 and subsequently endorsed by the World Health Assembly on 8 May 1980. _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

Yeah I felt awkward about that question, but I reasoned that the "eradication" occurred in 1979, and 1980 was just the official stamp, so 1979 felt more fair. Also I didn't think anyone would know the exact year enough to nail it with one year. So yeah, apologies for that question being pretty Trebekian. _________________ I'll have a P please... |

I have actually been on one proper tv quiz show in the UK (15-to-1) in which I sailed through the opening elimination round, but then completely screwed up the final show-down. Hey ho. (It's a good job there was no prize money on the line...) _________________
