Here are each of the maps:

Undercover Monk
Lexprod
Courk
Jedo The Jedi
MattV
Quailman

Rae's was sent the old fashioned way.

N on Hudson
Left onto Canal
Turn right on West Street (now going North) when I realize that the tunnel doesn't connect to Canal Street like that
Stay on 9A North
Get on I-95 West somehow
Turn onto I-80
Get off at Pennsylvania exit 310 (should put me on Foxtown Hill road)
Follow 611 to 191, turn left onto Godfrey Ridge Road
Follow 191
Merge straight onto Cherry Valley Road somehow
Stay on State Route 2008 (it turns Right at Bossardsville Road)
SR 2008 becomes Middle Easton Belmont Pike (or Logging Road 45008), stay on the Logging Road
Now going on Mid-Easton Belmont Pike
Turn Right on Manor Drive
Get onto 33/US-209
Follow US-209 (It goes West)
Stay on US-209
Get on I-476 South
Get on I-78 West
Merge with I-81 South
Stay on I-81
Get on I-70 West
Switch to I-68 West
Switch to US-40 at exit 14B (should be near a place called Keyser's Ridge)
Stay on US-40, going West
North on US-119
Get on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (43)
Turn right at Redstone Way (it's after the Turnpike ends)
Should now be on US-40 again
Follow US-40
Get on the Mon-Fayette Expressway
Get on I-70 West
Turn 'Left' onto I-465
Follow I-74
You should now be heading vaguely northwest on I-74

Shrug and stay on I-80, hopefully changing who wins by doing so
Pass through Nebraska and Wyoming
Yep, still on I-80

My guess is that jedo won, only simply because he did have the most direct route and the only person to have a cannonball hit someone ( Monk)

If someone wants to figure it all out good luck to them it was a herculean task something i do not plan on doing again, not in this way.

D'oh!

Is there anybody who can tackle this? I don't have a job right now, but the calculating seems a little complex for me (or maybe it really is just ultra time consuming).

it is unbelievably time consuming. the parts that I did (as you barely got out of the city!) took approximately 15 hours to do. It may get easier as the paths divulge, but it is still a lot of work involved.the hardest part is that you basically have to do everything at the same time because it is possible that the routes that people took may affect each other, and therefore could change the entire speed and can have a domino effect on everything.

the problem is being on the same road only counts if the players are on the same road simultaneously, which you can't determine until you do the previous calculations, so the whole game has to be calculated minute by minute I believe

Hence my suggestion that the "road speed" is based on the number of people who were ever on the road-- future, present, or past. Then you could calculate the speed that each road traveled on took. As there are about 30 roads/player I would guess around 100-200 road speeds would have to be found. Then it would just be listing how much time people spent on each road and adding it up. With good spreadsheet skills, this should take about 10 hours to calculate.
Then the extra effort of graphics and stories could be filled in. It wouldn't be hard to find out were everyone was after each day.

But the instantaneous method changes the road speeds. Now you are solving somewhat simple algebraic equations every time someone changes roads. Because the speeds keep changing, you have to track how far the other people on the new and old road already were. On top of that, the process has to be done in the correct order so making good starting guesses is essential. This method would only work well if there were less then ~50 road changes in the game.

I'm giving it a run (probably in some super-convoluted way), but I need to know what should be done about being on the same road that changed names (especially in NY).

Also, what speed should be given if it's a State and U.S. hwy or Interstate?

Interstate - 100mph
U.S. Highway - 75mph
State & County Highway - 50mph
Surface Streets - 25mph

So if you're alone on I-80, you're going at 100 mph, but if you're on US 66 you're going at 75 mph. Likewise, the theoretical OH 42 would be 50 mph and Glenway Ave would be 25 mph (unless that counts as a state highway, which I don't think it does)

I'm pretty sure that you'd go with the highest applicable value for roads whose names change - for example, along my route there's this point:

SR 2008 becomes Middle Easton Belmont Pike (or Logging Road 45008), stay on the Logging Road

and I was assuming that, since the State Route number got lost, it became a surface road.

Highest value seems reasonable to me.

What I decided is there are some roads that end in another one. If the map doesn't carry the name onward, I will count it as a new road. (For example, CR 501 changes into CR503 when it crosses Turner Lane.)

Additionally, there are some instances where US highways travel through towns and gain the name of a surface street. Initially, I thought I would take note of the surface street so that if somebody else is on the same surface street but which isn't part of the highway, they would be considered on the same street. However, if I'm only counting the higher valued street, it should only matter if both are on the same highest valued street. Does that make sense/seem reasonable?

I just finished cataloguing Courk's route. 4 hours? If other people's routes have less road changes, this part won't be hard.

After that, I'm going to look for duplicate streets on each person's lis. At least knowing that I can work with ease up until a certain point. (Of course, they all start in the same small vicinity, so that may just be wishful thinking. Wink )

MattV's transcription is finished.

I need Monk's, lexprod's, and rae's directions with the mileage markers for each street. There's something about lexprod's and Monk's Google Maps submissions that doesn't give the step-by-step in the sidebar but as a floating thing on the map.

I had to take the week off for other things, but I've been working on this most of today. It has become incredibly frustrating. Taking only the highest level road into account is a great method, but sometimes two Interstates overlap each other for dozens of miles. The problem is somebody might be on I-90 while somebody else is on a section of I-80 which overlaps I-90, thus affecting the speed in my opinion. Google maps is not sophisticated enough to highlight this though. I don't mind doing the extra math, but trying to log these finer points is difficult.

Who's idea was this? They should probably be shot.

Courk and raekuul get the award for most convoluted routes. Courk's was worse, but I had to copy rae's into Google Maps.

I'm almost finished transcribing rae's route into my spreadsheet, then I need to double-check the routes before calculating. I'm hopeful this will be finished by Wednesday.

All the transcriptions are finished. Adjusted/clarified rules:
1) In the case of overlapping road identifications, only the highest will be taken. If two roads of the same level overlap, both will be counted when considering speed of shared roads.
2) If a player took a "business route," the speed will be downgraded to the highest, in-town designation.
3) Where there is not a specific highway designation, toll roads are the only roads which will be counted as "interstates." Turnpikes will be counted as "state highways."
4) Instances where the change in streets was of no advantage were fixed (not Courk's zig-zags, but when somebody made a detour that covered the same stretch of road twice).
5) Bombs are placed instantaneously. Thus, if two cars happen to be traveling side-by-side, the bombed car will be affected.
6) If a car is delayed by a bomb, they will be considered to be on the side of the road and therefore not affecting the speed of that road.

Maybe more to come...
