Reading the added middle letters of the triplets in alternate patterns, going forwards then backwards (as the clues work) gives:

So we must bring that doll to puzzle HQ, and they give us our final solution to this puzzle? _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

You bring a dressed up doll to HQ, and they say "Hey! Looks pretty good! But I have something that would look even better."
They then hand you a new piece of clothing that has its name written on the back: CRUSHED VELVET TUX.
Annnnnnd.....scene.

And I have to excuse myself from this one because it was one I did a large amount of work on (mostly without research!), but completely failed to get to the final step (possibly due to not needing to do the research!), so I looked at the answer some time ago. _________________

It seems to relate to this:
http://www.sporcle.com/games/mswlhljtp/thestig
His droppings have been found as far north as York.
The drinks cabinet in his car contains fourteen different types of custard
If he could be bothered, he could crack the Da Vinci code in 43 seconds.
His skin has the texture of dolphins
He thought Star Wars was a documentary.
His earwax tastes like Turkish Delight

Every word is used once. It appears these gems are offered once during each episode of a show called Top Gear. Perhaps the fill-in crossword needs the episode names? _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

wow i stumbled on this on the right time!
Did someone say anything about Top Gear?
Check the stars in a reasonable priced car, there are 32 episodes
mentioned, but there was a certain time where they had two guests on each time.
that might give you your extra six. _________________ The Man The Myth The Legend

Maybe something to think about - whatever is used to fill in the grid, it runs from 3 letters long to 18 and 19 letters long. Anybody with a 19-letter last name? Or is there a car model that goes by such a long name?
3 letters: 1
4: 1
5: 1
6: 8
7: 6
8: 2
9: 1
10: 3
11: 3
12: 4
13: 3
14: 1
15: 1
16: 1
18: 1
19: 1
It's a bimodal distribution, strangely. |

yeah but there are only 23 challenges there,
If you have never watched top gear, its one of Clarkson's favorite sayings when doing a challenge, whether it be a race, or a full on challenge (like building the Snowplow/combine)
i have been thinking of this puzzle while i'm re-watching season 6 today. _________________ The Man The Myth The Legend

Is the Stig always the one who test drives the cars? Maybe on certain episodes someone else drove one of the listed cars. That could be a way to eliminate them. But still, do they fit into the spaces provided? _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

I'll post another puzzle tonight, but a hint for you:
1) Some of you have had the right idea for what needs to go in the grid (though I think there are 39 things, not 38).
2) If you watch the episodes, the information that needs to be entered into the grid is presented in a non-ambiguous way. |

Yes, it was that second point which I had missed, but it resolves everything quite neatly.
(As I said, my problem was that I recognised the title reference and knew it was the Stig straight away, so got pretty much all the phrases without needing to look any of them up. But that meant that I didn't take the next logical step, even though it was really obvious.) _________________

As penance for miscounting, I'll contribute this:
3 letters: 0 horizontal-1 vertical
4: 1-0
5: 0-1
6: 2-6
7: 6-0
8: 2-0
9: 1-0
10: 2-2
11: 3-0
12: 1-3
13: 0-3
14: 0-1
15: 0-1
16: 0-1
18: 1-0
19: 1-0
Watch me be wrong again. |

So, I watched a bit of an episode. It seems like they keep track of the best Power Laps times with a magnetic board. Each time they record has the car's name handwritten. Like so:
Maybe we are looking for the name they use on that board?

Here's an image of the board on the show:
So it seems that this is trying to be an exact replica:

Unfortunately, I don't see any cars listed as just 3 letters, so maybe that is out the window. _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

I have every single Top Gear episode from 2002-2012.
I'm still looking for anything that is particular. There are only a handful of times that the Stig ( as in White Stig) didn't drive the power lap. the most notable was with the newest FXX, where they had Michael Shumacher drive around the track because Ferrari didn't trust the show's Stig to not damage the car.
Also interesting to note, other than the 16X05 and 16X06, all of the other episodes mentioned had Ben Collins portray"the Stig" and did the laps.
I have them all queued up and i'll watch them one after another again tonight. _________________ The Man The Myth The Legend
