That powerboard snapshot that was posted isn't correct, there are a bunch of cars missing on there, like the DB5 from season 6 episode 5.

I'm pretty convinced that:

1) We need the names from the Power Laps board, given the hints that LK has given us

2) The names as listed on the board are not available online.

As an example, Koenigsegg is written on the board as Koenigseggisseggggnignigsegigisegggg, so any site that bothered to list the names of the cars as they appear on the board should findable.

A search on Koenigseggisseggggnignigsegigisegggg seems to turn up plenty of listings of the Power Laps times. Unfortunately all of them appear to list the official name of the car, rather than the name written on the board, with just an explanation for the odd spelling of Koenigseggisseggggnignigsegigisegggg

So, it looks like we're expected to purchase seasons 6 through 16 on DVD to crack this one.

MNO, is the Aston Martin DB5 listed as just "DB5" on the board? That would give us a three letter car.

Looks like we have a few extra, but it should be easy enough to figure out which ones.

In fact, these cars are not included in the grid:
BMW M5
BMW M3
Mazda 6 MPS
Mondeo ST220
Roush Mustang

In addition, Suburu Cossie is spelled Subaru Cossie in the grid, and Wiesman is spelled Weisman.

Depending on if you're looking at all teams or just teams that reached this point in the competition, somewhere between 13 and 21%

I would begin here:

Then figure out which VI text editor commands are necessary to get from the left picture to the right picture.

I'm reluctant to do this though, since VI is evil.

That was my immediate thought too. Then pick the commands indicated by the numbers and apply those in order to the last screen.

First set: b (gets the cursor to the U) a (insert mode after the u) nd - so it's 'band'.

Oh, that's very amusing - we've got a magic square and a latin square...

The magic tricks appear to be different types of illusion (prediction, vanishing, appearance etc.) I am going to assume that IDing the magician isn't part of this.

A - one person is touched, the other thinks they have been in the same place
B - one person reads the mind of another
G - cards appear linked then separate then linked again.
H - tearing a card up and then restoring it.
J - apparently headless woman
L - pen falls off table using "psychic powers"
N - makes prop coat come to life (arm doing apparently impossible moves)
O - rigged lorry that produces effect
P - coin passes through glass table
R - continual production of cards
S - card manipulation (card is not where it clearly was)
T - quick change (man changes into woman almost instantly)
W - cutting to correct card (controlling card positions?)
X - levitation
Y - apparent movement from one place to another
Z - vanishing (a really rather good version, probably because it looks so trivial.)

That was one reason, but the bigger reason was that all the new answers in this round are multiple words, and, per Scurra's observation that the titles look pangrammatic, hit a lot of 'rare' letters.

Magic square and latin square... *headslap*!

So, we fill in the letters in one square so as to make a latin or magic square. I'm guessing the right square will be magic and the left latin (according to some system of classification by Fitzkee, who seems to have written on magic theory), wherein the latin words somehow get numbers attached to them via Linnaeus's writings on taxonomy? That would be one way to add the right square to the letters in the left square.

So, combining my two lists, I get:

R - continual production of cards : Production (appearance, creation, multiplication)
Z - cards vanishing (a really rather good version, probably because it looks so trivial.) : Vanish (disappearance, obliteration)
Y - coins apparent movement from one place to another : Transposition (change in location)
T - quick change (man changes into woman almost instantly) : Transformation (change in appearance, character or identity)
P - coin passes through glass table : Penetration (one solid through another)
H - tearing a card up and then restoring it : Restoration (making the destroyed whole)
N - makes prop coat come to life (arm doing apparently impossible moves) : Animation (movement imparted to the inanimate)
X - levitation : Anti-gravity (levitation and change in weight)
G - cards appear linked then separate then linked again : Attraction (mysterious adhesion)
A - one person is touched, the other thinks they have been in the same place : Sympathetic Reaction (sympathetic response)
O - rigged lorry that produces effect : Invulnerability (injury-proof)
J - apparently headless woman : Physical Anomaly (contradictions, abnormalities, freaks)
S - card manipulation (card is not where it clearly was) : Spectator Failure (magician's challenge)
L - pen falls off table using "psychic powers" : Control (mind over the inanimate)
W - cutting to correct card (controlling card positions?) : Identification (specific discovery)
B - one person reads the mind of another : Thought Reading (mental perception, mind reading)

The final three aren't apparently included (although I guess you could argue that B might be "thought transmission", but it seems too much of a coincidence that the last three are all not included...)

Thought Transmission (thought projection and transference)
Prediction (foretelling the future)
Extrasensory Perception (unusual perception, other than mind)

Presumably, numbering them from 1 to 16 will enable the construction of a magic square?

If that's the correspondence, then the diagonal adds up to 34 which is the necessary number for a 4x4 magic square with entries 1-16. Plus, there is exactly one magic square that can be constructed, namely

7 10 16 1
11 6 4 13
2 15 9 8
14 3 5 12

A good start... but I think we need something additional (and probably Linnaeus-related). With just that information you can determine which grid squares have the 4 plants (for instance), but how to determine which one has rosa and which has prunus?

I have a very nasty feeling the disambiguation has something to do with Latin declension (as in "amo, amas, amat")
Since I spectacularly failed my Latin exam at school (albeit that was getting on for 30 years ago now!), I am ever so slightly unwilling to revisit that...*

Could I also propose that the suggested sets are, in fact, animal, vegetable, mineral and "abstract", which would provide a good Linnaeus link (presumably the somewhat odd choice of actual words is due to constraints in the answer extraction part...)

But I would guess that each set has one of four different types of ending so that they can form the "cross" groups to enable a Latin square to be constructed.
I can see one group is probably:
puella, rosa, tuba, ira
... but I am very unsure of the others. I haven't yet tried using the given entries in the grid to see if that sorts them all out though. (A 4x4 latin square shouldn't be too hard to solve!)

* having said that, a year or so ago I wrote a Latin phrases puzzle about three weeks prior to the previous MIT Hunt which happened to include an almost identical puzzle - so I managed to solve that one without too much trouble! But that was about pseudo-Latin translation, not about grammar so it probably doesn't count.

According to this, http://www.latin-dictionary.org/testu, testu can mean earthenware pot/vessel, although it's listed as testum in the index and in other sources. Anyway, I guess it fits with the Minerals theme.

Abstract:

metus - Fear
odium - Hatred

I was thinking the Linnean classification could be used for disambiguation, but 1) girl and mother-in-law should have the same classification (as should stone and mountain) and b) feelings don't have a Linnean classification.

I was thinking the Linnean classification could be used for disambiguation, but 1) girl and mother-in-law should have the same classification (as should stone and mountain) and b) feelings don't have a Linnean classification.
I agree, but there's probably some subtlety to the constraints that we don't recognise at the moment...

"rosa" must be in column 3 row 2
"tuba" must therefore be in column 2 row1
and thus "ira" must be in column 4 row 4

Just avoiding having the same suffix twice in a row or column might be disambiguation enough.

EDIT: That's actually too restrictive, equus can't be placed.

Wiktionary gives declensions for almost all of these.

1st declension: rosa, ira, puella, tuba
2nd: equus prunus odium saxum
3rd: anas amor mons vitis
4th: metus quercus testus socrus
