So here's the finished product:

prunus tuba amor socrus
metus anas rosa saxum
puella odium testu vitis
mons quercus equus ira

Now, how to add these to the letters of the magic square...? It's not just adding the declension number and it's not adding the number of letters in the word (both give gibberish).

Great work. (I got distracted at the last stage, although I don't think I'd have figured out the mod 26 aspect.)

Looks like the idea may be to take one slice from each of the 20 pictures and reassemble them into an acorn? Sounds like another arts and crafts session for Novice and his kids. Revenge most foul!

We're still missing the Zugzwaang answer, no?

And is there significance to the fact that the 8 recycled answers are listed separately from the 8 new answers?

It's not a slice, but if you look at the guy's beret in picture 1 it looks like half of an acorn...

You are right but you have all the *new* answers.

And the way the puzzles are presented on the William S Bergman page is as old answers and new answer separately (which hasn't been the case for other rounds). I am trying to match my answer presentation to the puzzle answer's presentation...

Either way, there is more to it. The drawings appear to represent common idioms, in some cases after you give or take a letter.

rolL/rolE call
just desSerts
put the caRt before the horse
free reiGns

the naked truth
bug hunting
lock horns

That would correspond with the things in the "key" up top: +S, +R, +G... SHOO IN to SHOE IN is O->E.

Steam turbine -> Turban (is this 3->2?)
Anchors aweigh -> away (4->2?)
Toe the line -> tow (E->W)

Almost all of these are homophonic. Some are actually quite common mistakes (tow the line, shoe in) and drive me nuts. [/u]

This is with a lot of guesses, so probably some mistakes. I couldn't help doing a bit of trial and error (which turned out to be surprisingly difficult).

El, If you could add the number of the pictures showing the idioms to your list, that would be helpful.

Yeah, as does the title.

Code:
TCATHOLICBALI    C
IONOUSTKROTOR    CCCC
CSITEFREERRUE
TIPADEOOWNING    CC
OGOLDSUEOTOGA    ACAC
KNISHSTONEIEL    A
CANTOOPWEDGIE    CC
UMTALSOISELMA    A
SOLOAOUROBOEU    CAAAC
SOURCERIDIOAT    AC
ELLORCASUNITU    C
SALSAOSHODRUM    CC
RHEABYPASSESN

So find a row of letters that fits with all these rows, with respect to number of correct letters, and number of correct but misplaced letters. That's probably easier said than done. Revenge most foul!

What does the interleaving of black and white dots signify, though?

Treating it as Mastermind doesn't seem to work out... too many letters are unavailable due to the two lines without dots. However, the number of dots (both white and black combined) always equals the number of O's on the line.

The title is 13 letters long. Find the right positions for the O's then apply that to the title, possible?
