That would appear to be STUTZ (although I've never heard of that or Utz)
Which leaves us with a *very* strange bunch of words... |

| I have a title for this puzzle which should be helpful, but I wanted to see if you could sort it out without one first. |

So a few of the clues have natural anagrams
WETS/WEST
BURY
?
?
SHADE
BAKE
?
?
I'm not sure that helps, however. |

Another thing I've noted is that the final letter in each word is the latest letter alphabetically in each word:
STEW - estW
RUBY - bruY
QUAY - aquY
DEEPENS - deeepnS
HADES - adehS
BEAK - abeK
STUTZ - sttuZ
CLEFT - ceflT
Seems unlikely that this would be coincidental. _________________ I hate people who try to write interesting things in their signature. |

Got it:
Each word has one letter out of position, and the others appear in alphabetical order.
stEw
ruBy
quAy
deePens
Hades
beAk
stuTz
cLeft
E B A P H A T L
which anagrams to alphabet.

| Ah, yeah you were supposed to sort the words by starting letter rather than just anagramming. That's the problem with anagrams, they can lead to unintended shortcuts like that. |

I am so impressed that you guys solved that, and I'm equally impressed with the construction of it. Even if the thought occurred to me to build a puzzle around that principle, I'm not sure how I'd go about finding the candidate word list. Plus I wouldn't do it, thinking the concept too unlikely for people to be able to solve.
So grats on the construction of it, and grats on the solution. |

Thanks, Zag. I do think the title gives a pretty good hint about what to do. As for constructing the words, it wasn't that hard, really. Just start at A and pick letters that combine naturally, until you have a word. I decided to make it a bit more complex by using the sort order of the words to solve the anagram - this meant starting with a word on B to clue the first A, then a word on C to clue the L, etc. I almost ran out of room though which is why I'm finishing off with the awkward STUTZ (which is also slightly ambiguous, since either the T or the U could be the misplaced letter. There's no such ambiguity in the other words, I made sure to displace the clued letter at least two spots. |

While some of these clues were deliberately vague, being candidates for backsolving, this one was just a cock-up:
Aquatic flower
I've amended it to read:
Flower whose varieties include Water and Easter |
