This thread is for recognizing the good accomplishments that large groups of people have done. Too much of the internet is about the good, bad, or ugly things that happen to us. Step back a moment and appreciate some collective human effort.
I think that Central Park inside New York city was a very good idea. |

It may not be a big international and timeless accomplishment, but several of my friends got together about 8 years ago and were inspired to build a mock pirate ship to take to events. It is hard work and I am proud to be counted amoung this crew. We are more than just friends after all this time and the dream keeps growing as this year we took to our event 123 people, 3 ships, and a fort with a clock tower and still have 2 "ships" in dry dock. It has been an amazing ride.

Microwave popcorn. If you've never taken the time to appreciate this little miracle, I suggest you buy a bag and do so. _________________ * These senseless ramblings brought to you by Insanity™. If you just can't figure the dang thing out, it must be Insanity™.

Apparently popcorn was the second food to be microwaved, and the first to be a deliberate test (the first was a Mr Goodyear bar that was in a pocket of a scientist for Raytheon, who was clever enough to realize the implications.) |

This one is still in the works but I believe its a huge one: Autonomous cars.
Advantages are overwhelming.
I would have loved to work on one of the current projects such as Google's.
Kind of dwarfs almost anything I worked on. _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

Whilst I appreciate the scale of the technology involved.
I have zero desire to see self driven cars being legally mainstream. _________________ oh hello |

Personally I really don't like the idea of a computer driving me around, I want to be in control of the vehicle.
Hypothetical situation, a dog dashes in front of the car, in taking evasive manovres the computer ends up hitting a child its sensors did not pick up until it was too late.
Id have mowed that dog down because I had seen the kid leaving the garden chasing a butterfly or whatever stupid thing it wae chasing.
Yes its reducto adumsurdum, and yes I think that god awful film I am Robot might use a similar idea in setting up will smiths character.
The fact remains computers can not deal with everyday situations like humans can.
Their logic will always be to cold and, well logical to deal with the vagaries of life and what the world throws at us.
Not to mention that if they became common place, like someone who hqs only driven auto not being able to handle manual, the requisite skillset fornindependant driving would be lost to many and so a computer failure would cause panemonium across the board. _________________ oh hello |

(bold mine)
Why?
Everyone here are soon going to start our 40 years of wondering in the desert trying to find Canaan, remembering drive control. The next generation will not understand why anyone would want to drive except for sport, special work, hobby, etc.

Unlike humans is an advantage in this case.
All of: happiness, sadness, anger, road tiredness, texting + 100 other VS mindless focus on a single task.
There are things computers/systems do better than us. Driving, I believe, will be one of them.
Don’t just think of autonomous cars but also supporting infrastructure (e.g. stop lights transmitting their status) and car to car communication.
There would be accidents but less than now and the more people use them the less accidents we'll have.

If this works correctly, only people building automated cars will know how to drive cars manually.
The rest would just be users who have no idea how the machine they are using actually works and what to do if its broken except call a technician. (or me when my mom's internet is broken again) _________________ Will sell this place for beer |

For the same reason my great-greadfather didn't want to ride around in one of those noisy auto-mobile things. He would much rather have a buggy with a horse that doesn't break down all the time.
Automated cars will be a very hard transition, and you KNOW that the naysayers will make the most out of the first fatal accident that happens in one. They won't be interested in comparisons to how many accidents are caused by human drivers. Statistics are boring; most people don't understand them; and they are too inured to them, anyway, because of the way people with an agenda have always manipulated them. However, you're totally right, pretty soon the automated cars will be safer than the human-driven ones, but they will have to be VASTLY safer before they are accepted. |

I accept the arguements put forward in favour of the idea, and I likely am being, what could be considered, irrational on the subject.
But I, personally, do not want to have a computer driving me around, I want to drive myself, although the easing of traffic appeals to me, people really don't know how to keep traffic moving effectively.
NSOF's comment on how people won't know how it works and will just call up a technician when thugs go wronis certainly not an appealing aspect of this idea. To hell with that, if my car stops I'll generally get it going again myself, I have no desire to be held waiting for some Muppet to come along, plug hid laptop into my car and then say "ok fixed, that's £200 please"
Computers crash and freeze, yesz blah blah things are getting more reliable, doesn't matter. When my car has a problem (unless it siezes or a wheel falls off) I'll pull into the side of the road and investigate.
When the computer freezes and the person behind the wheel has no idea how to control the vehicle, its shit the pants time. _________________ oh hello |

When gas hits $10/gallon, you'll see the importance of a bicycle. You'll need it to get to your concerts. _________________ All religions are the same - Guilt....just with different holidays. |
