Obviously.
Is that meant to be sarcasm? I know you're a Republican, so it seems like it must be, but higher taxes = more money for Stockton, right? I mean, maybe not enough money given that they were desperate enough to file for bankruptcy, but, um, I don't see how it wouldn't have helped.
Was it sarcasm? I'm so confused. Do cities pay federal taxes as an entity over there or something? |

"for" Stockton, "from" Stockton
Yeah, more money helps forestall bankruptcy, but so does not spending what you don't have. |

I admit to only reading up a tiny bit on Stockton before making my previous reply, but I got the impression that the city is a victim of the real estate crash rather than one of outrageous spending. I think it would be pretty clear, then, that the blame rests more strongly on the banks than on the municipal government.
Either way, I don't think it was "their taxes were too high!" causing the bankruptcy, which was the impression JD's post gave me. My reply was admittedly tongue-in-cheek (believe it or not, I would disapprove of raising the tax rates on people who already can't make their house payments!). |

As far as I can tell, Stockton hasn't tried to raise taxes, and would have difficulties doing so (they need voter approval for a sales tax increase, and Prop 13 basically eliminates the possibility of a property tax increase.) |

Add two more California cities to the list. Mammoth Lakes (which only has about 8000 people) and San Bernardino.
Can LA, San Francisco, and/or Sacramento be far behind? |

The town of Stockton, California's bankruptcy case may become the single biggest such case in history. But that is not its only Guinness-worthy record lately. The conditions behind a recent court ruling amount to the biggest parking ticket ever served. And it reiterates a basic financial lesson for us all.
Stockton parking garage fiasco a lesson for all. |

Yeah, I thought the same thing, since it is bree09's only post on GL. But the link is spot on topic, so there isn't any reason to remove it.
I wonder if, perhaps, he is responsible for that site, the Personal Money Network. He's trying to build his SEO, but, unlike others posting stupid links wherever, he is actually working to put his links in places in which they are relevant. That is, he searches for discussion boards where they are actually talking about stuff that their articles could add to and adds his link. If that's his approach, I wish him well and invite him to add more highly-relevant links to different discussions on the GL. |
