I wrote 100 cryptics for the TopGler competition. The puzzle didn't require all cryptics to be solved, so here are the 30 that are currently unsolved.

A few notes:
1) I've rearranged these into alphabetical order by solution.
2) These are actually half-cryptics - no definition is provided as you can assume the definition for each one is "a musical performer or band".
3) Some performers may be listed by just their first or last name. As an example, SINATRA or MARIAH might be clued, rather than the full name. Other times, a full name is clued.

BLEU (aka William James McAuley III)? - Boston College surrounded in two directions. (4)

I think this clue is poor (in my defense, I wrote 100 in just a few hours). Maybe Opening of Boston College is surrounded in two directions.(4)

Two other clues could probably use just a little help:

Scottish family takes a short vacation. (7)
Becoming sister, too. (9)

Yeah, I suck at these cryptics. I like the puzzles, but I rarely can guess them correctly. Even after the answer is posted, I have trouble understanding some of them.

Not to detract from your achievement in any way, but it just occurred to me that composing these half-cryptics should be a bit easier in general, since you don't need to fit in the definition as well. So it's easier to get a good surface, in other words. Still, the overall quality here really is excellent, as I've already noted.

No doubt, it was much easier. But, given their usage in the original puzzle, I also had to find artists who had albums that started with specific letters in years where they only released one album. That part was no fun.

I was looking at a lot of names of bands, primarily rock and metal, trying to find one that fit the Becoming sister, too (9) clue. I suspected that it would involve an anagram of the final two words. Finally I found one that somewhat fit: REDSTAINS. It is an anagram of SISTER + AND, with AND being a synonym of the word TOO. Involving an anagram of a wordplay definition, of course, is frowned upon. Yet, it was recognizing that TOO was AND that finally led me to the cryptics answer: STREISAND.

I don't know if it is a name of a band, but RA(N)KED fits the clue: Collected around November. (6)

Your suggestion for Collected around November is not the intended one. This one will be tougher without knowledge of the band/artist, since the solution is not a word you'd find in a dictionary. In fact, the remaining 4 clues are in this same boat.

As a little push the last 4 include:

The first name of a solo artist who is most often referred to by both names.
The last name of a solo artist who is most often referred to by both names.
The name of a band that isn't related to a first or last name.
The name of a band, which is also the last name of a band member.

Alas. Isn't it ironic? .

Could "price" = "collected"? I don't think so, unless you're asking and your buying it. PRINCE falls between PANTERA and STREISAND, yet doesn't really fit the clue.

I really don't follow bands or musicians. Was ignorant of many of the genres of metal and rock and only a little aware of some of the band names. I would have liked to have seen some Country bands in the list. (Though I am not a country music fan, I would consider myself more so than of most of the heavy metal or alternative rock bands). And as the title of this puzzle is simply Cryptic Bands, one might consider it a slight that that genre and the like were slighted from the list.

AFI < [ 3] < ALANIS
CRANBERRIES < [14] < DAVID BOWIE
PANTERA < [26] < STREISAND
[ 3] Deception right inside a support group. (8)
[14] Desert surrounds nothing. (8)
[26] Collected around November. (6)

That's not actually the title, since these are leftovers from the real puzzle. Still, country music could have been included, but wasn't because I'm really not a fan. If it helps any, I originally had a clue for Dolly Parton, but replaced it when the names of her albums didn't fall in line with what I needed for the original puzzle.

Nope, but you're not so far away. It's been awhile since I posted this, so I hope we finish it out soon.

I believe I mentioned this, but this band's name isn't a word you'd find in the dictionary, nor is it a first/last name.
