That didn't work so well for the Titans against the Lions on Sunday. Or for the Jags against the Texans in 2010....or the Bears against the Chiefs in 2011...

1¼ days remain to seize control of the government, have the army force the NFL referees back to work, and submit your lists.

However, the other signal was not a Touchback signal, that is only one arm (kinda like a fair catch signal by a returner). That signal means "stop the clock".

I agree that the signal from the other ref was not "touchback", but was "stop the clock". Isn't that an odd signal to make when the clock already reads 0:000?

OK, it sounds odd, but the signals are what they are. When the play ends and you don't have a clear signal, the clock has to be stopped. There's no special signal for "I would stop the clock but since it is at zero I don't need to worry about that" Revenge most foul!

Quote:
Also, John Clayton reports that the referee never conferred with the two officials who made those signals to come to agreement on what the "call on the field" was. Given that two different signals were made, it seems appropriate that the officials would huddle, determine the call they were going to go with, announce that, then review. Since the replays have the possibility of being "inconclusive" making the best possible "call on the field" is imperative, and it doesn't seem that this officiating team made an additional effort to discuss the proper "call on the field" before heading to the replay booth. (i.e. if the ruling on the field had been an interception, the replay would still have been inconclusive.)

Again correct on your last point. I didn't see the game live, and all the images I've seen are from videos, so I don't know if there was an officials huddle (it makes sense that a huddle taking more than a couple seconds would be edited out).

Quote:
I get it. Refereeing is hard, the play is only being emphasized this much because of when it occurred and the strong narrative that provides for the media, etc. The point is that there are qualified referees who, while not perfect, would have handled this situation much better. and they were sitting home and watching, just like we were.

Or so we hope. We don't know what call the regular officials would have made, and we never will. As you said, they are not perfect, either. Which is only natural, nobody is. It is a job I like to do, but man is it ungrateful.

The message I want to send, and I know it's this short of utopia, is the fact that, as UM said, there are eight sacks, a fumble on their own seven when they just needed to run out the clock, a questionable decision of intercepting instead of forcing an incomplete when a) it was at time zero, and b) it was on fourth down, and surely other missed plays (not to say that Seattle didn't have mishaps, of course they had). And yes, the call was on the last play, and the Packers are entitled to their opinion of it being wrong, and they were only five points ahead, but there's other factors for why that is the case.

People should learn that there's no shame in admiting "we lost" and they shouldn't take refuge on "the ref cost us the game". I also want to dispel the notion I've seen on other questionable calls (not on this one, probably because their inexperience puts a clear target) that "the refs were against us". Because I can assure you that the officials are there just to enforce the rules from a point of neutrality, and they call the breaches of the rules as they see them, to the best of their ability.

You're right there. Two things I'd like to clarify in what I said.

1) I'm obviously not positive the real officials would have made a better call, but I am totally confident that they would've better handled the process of making the call. (No huddle-up to discuss, players were all over the place, Green Bay had to be called back out of the locker room for the extra point, on-field post-game interviews had already been conducted before the extra point, etc.)

2) Even if the real refs made a bad call, knowing that they are the most qualified people to make that call adds a level of comfort. To put the best out there and come up short every once in a while is acceptable. To put un- or under-qualified referees out there makes this type of call untenable.

One other thing I haven't heard anyone mention about the end of the game, because all the talk has been referees. The touchdown only put Seattle up by 1. Given that the PAT had to be kicked, Green Bay still had an opportunity to win the game, with a blocked PAT return (which another team actually did in Week 3). I heard a lot of people giving GB "credit" for going back out there for the "meaningless" PAT, only it wasn't meaningless. If GB had given any indication of a field goal block attempt, I'm wondering if it wouldn't have been wiser for Seattle to simply kneel-down rather than attempt the PAT.

Well damn. It looks like the Wipeout team for this week is either the 49ers or the Packers followed closely by the Lions, Cowboys, or Bears.

I'm almost willing to bet one of these teams will be it, even though I would prefer the Chiefs or the Dolphins.

Well, as long as Eli manages to put some points on the board, I'll score points again this week. But what we ALL really want (admit it, you want it too), is for the Bears to be shut out. This will pick up all the other players who didn't already choose the Jets, leaving me as the only person to score, again.

For the record, the Chargers and Chiefs were my last-minute additions. If one of them is the wipeout, I'll be really annoyed. Also, the Bills were a last minute removal, when I saw that they are up against that SF defense which I think will bring down their house of cards. (IMHO, their high scores are more luck than skill).

If Zag gets points this round, Jaguar will also.

The potential--and likely!--Wipeout teams given Zag's history are the Bills, Cowboys, Dolphins, Eagles, Panthers, Seahawks, or Steelers. If you have one of these teams, be on the lookout.
