Seriously, there's something in the Bible about something that probably applies to this ("have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth") ... and we have freedom of religion in this country, so WTF?

Pinellas County Sheriff
Quote:
"'Go ride a Jet Ski. Don't use animals,' the sheriff said. 'She needs to be held accountable for her actions.'"

wow! It's like some kind of parody, like something you'd read in The Onion, or some other non-serious report. The real problem harming manatees are boats, and probably fishing nets. I don't think this woman was harming the manitees in any way. Was she? This is just hard to believe they are serious and making this woman out to be a true trouble maker.

Luckily we have a poster here who knows a *lot about manatees. Hopefully they'll chime in here with their opinion about this.

D. U. M. B.

I'm so glad police could use their precious resources to bring this woman to justice.

Monofilament line is also pretty dangerous.

The danger here was not so much in her riding the animal, as it is the harm that comes about if manatees get too used to people. Like article said, they have no natural predators and are thus unafraid of humans, but this also means they have no real defenses. It's not humans manatees need to be wary of, they need to avoid motor boats. Humans tend to come with motor boats, though. Its safer for the manatees to not have human contact.

Well, it's not a fish, or a fowl, and it doesn't "moveth upon the earth", so it doesn't apply. Razz

So you're saying manatees evolved to exploit some kind of loophole in the Genesis dominion clause? I don't know, seems a bit of a stretch.

Good point, Courk. That makes sense, being a bad idea to condition the manatees to be more accustomed to humans than they already are.

It seems though what is needed is more awareness and education, hope they don't hang this manatee molester (whom I think was in need of education and meant no harm) from the village square.

Maybe it's just the cynic in me, but with so many stories to choose from, threads like these just seem like a cheap ploy to get Courk to post somewhere Revenge most foul!

Glad the matter was sorted out, though.

I have to admit I was shocked when it wasn't courk making the OP.

Monofliment line, wasn't that a mafia member?

Cynical indeed. Who would stoop to such a thing?
