Is this a puzzle that's meant to have a solution link in the top right corner? I'm afraid to click that.

All puzzles have a solution link in the top right corner. Resist the urge.

For ABCs, the clues seem pretty straightforward. I'm more interested in the rhythms:

Under "Forbid + Deep hole" (6 notes = BAN + PIT?) is what seems like the opening line of The Star Spangled Banner.

Under "Professionals’ charges" (= FEES) is likely Beethoven's Fifth. At least, I can't imagine anything else memorable enough to be gotten after only 4 notes like that.

I'm trying to fit in what seems like a larger than normal collection of a, b, c, d, e, f and g from the clues into the musical notes.

That is, I like the word FEES and BAN but not PIT.

If letters tell us tones, then either letters F & E do not correspond to the notes F and E, or the tune under FEES is not Beethoven's Fifth (but I can't place any melody that does start f-e-e-? in that rhythm), or FEES is incorrect (but I can't see how it would be).

Yup. My idea fails.

ENDURE could be BRAVE or STAND
HACK could be SLASH, SLICE and many more.

Any patterns emerging from the words we have?

Maybe each letter should be translated to its corresponding note from the Alphabet Song sheet music?

I'm terrible at IDing music, but Google indicates that this:

01. e e e c e g

is the Mario Bros. theme.

Beethoven's Fifth would probably be more formally titled "Symphony #5".

So the extracted 23 characters will probably be a clue "something plus something else" and we have to solve it without knowing the rhythm for the final answer.

4 = Think of Me (from Phantom of the Opera)
5 = Harry Potter theme (or "Hedwig's Theme")
7 = She Loves You (Beatles)
19 = Ding Dong the Witch is Dead
20 might be Deck the Halls but the first three notes are off a bit. Maybe we have a wrong word?

ZULUS is apparently correct as a plural, so it could be ZULUS + MAKE (or another 4-letter word for PREPARE)

After the PLUS, it looks like we're heading for GROW WEARY or GREW WEARY, so perhaps that points to TIRE or TIRED.

Isn't it "This Land is YOUR Land"?

Then the clue could read SNAKE SOUND PLUS GREW WEARY for HISS+TIRED?

ffffefgag might be (I'm very uncertain of this) "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic, which would at least be part of a lengthy and potentially miserable experience, per the meta...

If that were it, we'd get a score of 75, which works nicely.

I can't seem to hear those notes in the song, however.

That's why I'm unsure! There are parts that fit the ffff, and then parts that are efgag, but never in that exact order.

I found it by googling ccccbcded (the tune transposed down a fourth).

Cool. The length works - 14 letters = 70%

Correct. I remember there being not a large number of songs that would work that you could get with no clue as to the rhythm.

I would probably have taken a much longer time getting it had it not been for the meta. I was wondering, "Why didn't they choose something from a musical? Even better, why didn't they choose something from Les Miserables?"

But then I got somewhat stuck on Master of the House, since it also has a phrase that goes ffffefgag (at the time we didn't know whether it was TIRE or TIRED) albeit with an added f at the end.

Well, there's quite a lot to this current one.

As it's a BINGO card, there are 24 available spaces, divided among these types:

Text: 6
1. WISTFUL - cryptic clue - redirects to melancholia
2. SHIRAZ - cryptic clue - "infrafed Arizona" and "red wine"
3. SOUTH - cryptic clue “rose petal” and "headless mouth"
4.
5.
6.

Image: 9
1. CHANG - name-that-head image of Star Trek
2. PHLOX - name-that-head image of Star Trek
3. CUBA - pic of the island in the Caribbean
4. MISSILE - yielded from pics of Trident, Atlas, and Peacekeepr
5. Cards from MtG [Armillary Sphere, Countersquall, Knight of the Reliquary, Volcanic Fallout]
6. Icons from WoW - [DK, mage, priest, rogue, lock, warrior...cluing a race]
7. Cryptarithm using letters from On Beyond Zebra. [S is 3 or 4, W is 5 or 6, P is 2, Fuddle is exponentiation, Spazz is addition or subtraction, We need to extract P Fuddle (W Spazz S). Fromm W Vroo (X Snee S) = X, you can conclude that W and S share a prime factor, and because (S Glikk W) Flunn P is positive, at least one of S and W is odd. Also note that from the last line you know your final answer is at most two hexadecimal digits.]
8. Rebus with one plus and one minus, yielding a type of trombone.
9. Image with sound effect photoshopped out in D3.

Video: 4
1. FARGO in Column 2
2. TROY
3. video of tying a slipknot without string in Column 1
4.

Audio: 2
1. LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON
2. Classical music from Holst

Object: 3
1. Package C - POCKY
2. Package B - SPANDEX or LYCRA
3. Package A - Bag of keyboard keys 123456ABCDFGHNSVXZ [these are the first six keys in rows 1, 3 and 4 on a qwerty keyboard], will yield something that leads us to ask "is that even a word" and answer "it’s an adjective... sort of..."]

CARD LAYOUT:
A1: CUBA - image
A2:
A3: WoW icons - image
A4:
A5: Cryptarithm using letters from On Beyond Zebra. - image

B2:
B3: something about a beagle with a guitar - video clip

C4: TROY

E2:
E3: WISTFUL - text (cryptic clue)
E4:
E5: something Pokemon-related - Normal type, appears in that MH2K puzzle, it’s National Pokedex

Also, can we find a less obvious (and maybe less gruesome) clip for the movie in row 5? That’s the scene that everyone knows about.

movie scene: ya, you betcha. How about a nice clip of Frances?

This points to FARGO (and is video clip)

Last question... the clip in row 3, is that actually from the movie?

Based on the music playing I think it’s actually from the trailer.

Uh, yeah. I didn’t really want to buy some random movie just to get a clip for this puzzle. Especially because I’m allergic to Brad Pitt. It’s clear anyway, right?

Sure. I got it just from “largest fleet”.

This points to TROY in Row C

Greg identified the Klingon guy in the fourth column. He couldn’t remember which movie it was, but Google to the rescue: “star trek” “eye patch” and there he is.

This is GENERAL CHANG.

Finally broke down and used Image Search. I was close: I had thought it was from Enterprise, but I looked up the engineer instead of the doctor. Should have been more persistent!

This is PHLOX.

I think I have all three cryptic clues, but I’m not so happy with them.

First row: Are you sure of the dictionary definition?
Bottom row, first column: Surface reading of “headless mouth” is a little contradictory, don’t you think? Maybe you can clue replacing that letter in one step, rather than chopping off one letter and then gluing on a new one. It took me a while to realize you were using the word straight-up for its letters; I thought it was a clue for MAW or something.
Bottom row, middle column: I think the fact that “melancholy” is the dictionary half is too obvious.

Re. the third one, I take your point. (Wikipedia even redirects the answer to “melancholia”.)

This suggests that the square in the middle column in the bottom row contains a cryptic clue where the solution is WISTFUL.

The classical music is Holst, right? And the audio clip in column 4 is obvious. (Just one, monsieur!) Starting on the cryptic clues now.

"Just one, monsieur" points to LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON.

The top left image is obviously trivial if you’ve ever looked at a map of the Caribbean).

You could clue the top left corner using the actor.

Yeah, but I already have two identify-this-head clues (aforementioned Star Trek characters). Plus, how would you make clear we mean the first name only?

Top left corner is CUBA in image form.

Uh, replace “white” with “red” in that first one. Look, I don’t actually drink wine...

He overhauled that awkward “infrared Arizona” construction.

Infrared Arizona points to IRAZ, leading to the red wine SHIRAZ, which goes somewhere in Row A.

How do we know that the three objects in row 3 column 1 clue the singular, not the plural? Also, at this resolution I can’t really tell what kind of book the middle one is.

Good point. I’ll put “or” between them and fix the middle one. Is the one on the right clear?

Switched the middle one to guy-with-sphere.

Definitely; those blue helmets are iconic.

While we’re looking at this square, if you want to increase your physical object count, you could clue the left one with a piece of gum. But I guess you don’t want to mix media like that.

Yeah, plus the King was always my favorite character in The Little Mermaid. Gotta have the shoutout. (Kidding.)

This clues Trident, Atlas, and Peacekeeper, giving the singular MISSILE in C1.

About your “edible object”: are people going to get hung up on the exact flavor they get?

I can give multiple flavors; given that they need to get a single word out of everything else it should be pretty clear that they just want the overall brand name. Plus this way they have more to share, and I can branch out from the boring old strawberry and chocolate to things like the ever-popular Men’s. (Yup, it comes in “Men’s” flavor.)

Seems to point to POCKY - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocky

About the fabric sample: how are they supposed to tell which name to use? There might be multiple kinds of stretchy fabric, and one way or another there are several brand names for this one.

On the other item, do you think it’s enough to write “US brand name” on it? That simultaneously suggests that it’s a brand-name fabric and tells them which one.

Per Wikipedia, “North American” would be more precise. But yeah, that ought to work.

Probably points to SPANDEX but I'm not sure that this is a "brand name". Wikipedia says The name "spandex" is an anagram of the word "expands". It is the preferred name in North America. LYCRA seems to be the brand name, but Wiki says it is known in the UK and Ireland primarily as Lycra, which doesn't seem to match up with the discussion. Of course, Wikipedia changes over time, so there's always that possibility.

[S is 3 or 4, W is 5 or 6, P is 2, Fuddle is exponentiation, Spazz is addition or subtraction, We need to extract P Fuddle (W Spazz S). Also note that from the last line you know your final answer is at most two hexadecimal digits.]

So W = 6, S = 3, hence P Fuddle (W Spazz S) is either 2^9 or 2^3. Since 2^9 requires 3 hex digits, it must be 2^3. So EIGHT is the answer?

Audio clip is "right above the Pokemon" (hence row 4, column 5) and 4th of 7. So it's JUPITER from Holst's Planets suite.

WoW: "DK, mage, priest, rogue, lock, warrior..." are the available classes for the GNOME(S) race (plus monk, but that wasn't available in Jan 2012).

Not sure you're classifying the clues correctly. The cryptarithm and rebus might count as text rather than image? There is a picture of a lunar crater for instance that you haven't listed. Also the Pokemon clue is... text? Hard to tell.

You may be right. The cryptaritm is a .pdf, so how would we classify that? A rebus would seem to be images, however.

I should also note that the breakdown of types was done before some changes - the "letter square" (I don't know what that is, unfortunately) was replaced by the image of the lunar crater...so maybe the final count is different?

Good point.

The slipknot video is in row 2 (comment 96).

"Ridged alien guy" in middle row I guess is Phlox, and the only square left there is c5?

Missing two clues in row A are the crater and the first cryptic. Row C is full. That means the packages are in rows B, D, E.

Where is the chemistry clue?
