I was reminded that maybe promoting this on the GL would be a good idea because dethwing asked me a question on behalf of referee*, who saw the game on his twitch.tv page.
Battle of LITS is the greatest board game of all time a board game I designed in 2011, and have been trying very hard to get published. Lyris Laser Studios will soon have a deluxe wooden version of the game available for purchase at a price of around US$50, but for those of you on a budget, you can pre-order a more portable version of the game by Spanish publisher nestorgames; the pre-order price will be 12 euros (a 20% discount off the proposed 15 euro price) plus 9 euros shipping to the European Union, USA, Canada, Brazil, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore (the entire order ships for 9 euros, even if you order 42 copies of the game). That's about US$27. You can use PayPal, a credit card, or a bank transfer to order the game. If you're an advocate of the Bitcoin currency, you can get a bigger discount! Nice, deal, right?
There's a hitch, though: this is a Kickstarter-style deal where the pre-orders must reach a certain level within the next month (December 26), or the game won't be published at all! I know that when I first joined this forum, I was the immature Aspie kid who deserved to be banned, but miraculously wasn't somehow. things have changed, though; I'm still an immature Aspie kid, but I write great puzzles (great enough for my blog to be ranked #8 on a blog directory!), and surely somebody as great as writing puzzles and as humble as myself deserves to have his board game published.
Here's a brief summary of the rules (the full version is HERE):
* The board starts with X's and O's on it. One player is X, and one player is O. Each player tries to cover up their opponent's symbols with tetrominoes, while protecting their own symbols.
* Starting with X, players take turns placing any tetromino from the shared supply (5 each of L, I, T, and S) onto the board. X may play the first tetromino anywhere. From that point on:
** Every tetromino must share an edge with at least one other tetromino.
** No two tetrominoes of the same shape (color) may share an edge.
** No four cells in a 2x2 arrangement may all be covered by tetrominoes.
* When no more pieces can be legally placed, count how many X's and how many O's remain uncovered; the player with more of their symbol wins. (In the case of a tie, the player who played the last piece wins.)

Sarcastically feigned egotism aside, I hope that other GLers will find it within their hearts and budgets to support Battle of LITS, whether it's the wooden version from Lyris Laser Studios or the portable version that I hope nestorgames will be able to publish. Please promote this in any way you can, too! This is the most passion I've ever had about something I've designed, and want to see my investment in nestorbooster pay off!
Why don't we play a game? Here's a board I designed exclusively for the GL.
| Code: |

OOOOX.X.X.
O..OX...XO
OO.OX.XXXO
......OOOO
OOOO......
OXXX.XO.OO
OX...XO..O
.X.X.XOOOO
.XXX.XXX.. |
If two people post within the next 48 hours wanting to play, use a die roll to determine who is X and who is O and start right away. If only one person plays, I'll be the opponent. The swap rule is in effect: O can swap positions with X instead of placing a piece on the first turn. X should try to make a fair opening move to make it harder for O to decide whether to continue playing as O or to swap.
*referee's question was about whether shipping was less expensive due to being in Spain, the same country as nestorgames. It is still 9 euros; I will gladly pay referee's shipping if he orders the game and it gets published, because I want to be generous.

And for mathgrant: having a few areas where play isn't allowed would be good. This would allow more possibilities for blocking certain plays. Doing this would also allow larger boards with games that last the same number of plays.

I think there are enough offensive and defensive possibilities as is, but certainly one could create boards with holes or irregular shapes. Possibly an advanced rule along the lines of what you're saying is to allow a player to place a single-cell block on any space containing their symbol; this block wouldn't count as part of the stream of LITS pieces which the players are building, but would prevent pieces from being played on it, perhaps sacrificing one of your symbol to save others. _________________ My logic puzzle blog |

If you had played your T with the pointy end up, I would have won on a tie breaker.
I think my highly defensive S piece in the top left was very well placed. It put you into a place without any good moves.
It would be more fun with transparent colored pieces!

Yes, pieces like that, as are featured in Blokus et al., are very pretty to look at and to touch. For now, though, the deluxe edition uses completely opaque wood, and the budget version (which I hope some GLers will pre-order now that they have a vague idea of how it plays) will have completely opaque foam. _________________ My logic puzzle blog |
