Just to put a branding iron into the cold fire:

RADICAL:
Forward and outward from the center is outward to center. (7)
RADICAL = RADI(C)AL

Forward = RADICAL (synonyms)
and : linking word
outward from the center = RADIAL
is outward to : containment indicator
