Eh, I've always been suspicious of the theory of relativity. Doesn't it conflict with quantum theory and such? 'Bout time we disproved it.

Can I use that new thread to comment on the fundamental difference between my religion (science) and all the others -- that the priesthood (that is, scientists) are delighted to find facts that contradict their understanding of the universe, because it represents an opportunity to change their understanding to make it more accurate?

Naaah, I wouldn't want to start that old debate again.

I didn't know that debate was had. But I wonder, is what you say of all other religions necessarily so? Can there not be a religion (in the spiritual sense) that welcomes better understanding? I do agree most are very dogmatic (very very).

I believe that there are religions which are not incompatible with this belief (though not many). However, if there were any which actively sought out the incompatibilities to their own "dogma" with the goal of changing it, then they would be called science.

More weirdness from Northern Ireland.
Arrested for burning some weed.

So much for freedom of speech. The idea that this represents incitement to hatred is ridiculous. Certainly, people will bet upset over this and perhaps hate those who performed this act, but frankly I believe it says more about their own intolerance and hatred than that of the perpetrators.

The poppy is not just a symbol of fallen soldiers. It has become obligatory to wear it, regardless of how you feel about the politics as an outward display of support for the British Armed Forces, and not just for a single day either, particularly in the BBC. Of course, in Ireland, there is much anger about the British Armed Forces, so the poppy is seldom seen here in the South. Many Irish men were killed in the wars, even though Ireland declared itself neutral, and there is much debate about how to honour them, currently the easter lily seems to be the most appropriate.

The latter wouldn't surprise me. Of course, technically, an embryo isn't a fetus.

Arizona legislators propose loyalty oath requirement for high school graduation.
Quote:
A group of Republican lawmakers want to require Arizona students to recite a loyalty oath to the U.S. and its Constitution before they can graduate high school. They are sponsoring House Bill 2467 in the Legislature. If passed, it would make the loyalty oath a prerequisite for graduation from any public high school in Arizona starting with the 2013-14 school year.

I'm not sure what they are thinking this will accomplish, nor can I believe they believe it will remain if it is passed.

New Arizona gun law draws outcry from Democrats
Quote:
Arizona is doing more to protect guns from people than it is to protect its citizens from guns, legislative Democrats said Tuesday as they slammed the Republican-led Legislature and governor for approving a new gun law.

Their comments came a day after GOP Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law the first gun bill of the legislative session. House Bill 2455 requires local governments to sell any firearms they may acquire through voluntary surrender or from unclaimed property.

That would bar cities from destroying the weapons, like Phoenix plans to do with firearms gathered from a series of three gun-buyback events this month. Phoenix is following through with its program, because the bill won’t be law for at least three months.

But city officials said the legislation likely makes this month’s events the last of their kind.
