Just a heads-up that my annual quiz tournament will be launching soon, probably mid-April. I have at least 50 more questions to write first.
Same rules as always. If you don't know the format then there's the game from last May/June to have a look at.
Who can possibly grab the title from Scurra?
There's no need to sign up (but we're bound to get a few who do just that!)

What if Scurra can only answer 9 out of 10 questions in a round? He can choose which 9 to answer though.
I'm not sure whether he will appreciate the challenge. (He can always answer all 10, designate which one is the extra, and you can calculate what his score would have been without the handicap.) _________________ Paragon Tally: 19 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

Quiz Olympiad III. Current champion is Scurra.
A quiz knockout game. Using the Honesty quiz rules...no research permitted, with players on their honour to abide by this rule. Answers are PM'ed to me. There must be no discussion of questions in the forum until the round is closed. Any queries, PM to me please.
The 10 questions of each round will be on different subjects (more or less). To eliminate problems with accuracy of player answers, all questions will be multiple choice with 3, 4 or 5 options. All a player needs to do is choose one answer option for each question. Answer options will be listed in alphabetic order so it's possible to have all A's or even all E's for answers but don't expect an even spread of answers.
Players will NOT need to sign up in advance, just submit answers for round 1. The lowest scoring player(s) of each round will be eliminated. If only one player is eliminated by this, then the next lowest score might also be used to eliminate players...unfortunately this will have to be at my discretion.
I will aim for the game to go around 5-6 rounds so expect around 20% of the original number of contestants to be eliminated each round.
The deadline for the first round will be approximately three weeks, reducing to a week for subsequent rounds. I suspect the game will flow quicker than that. Current players failing to submit answers by the deadline will be eliminated but I will do what I can to avoid such an event. I shall PM a reminder to any players I'm waiting for.
Scores in previous rounds are irrelevant. You just need enough right answers in a round to get you into the next round. When we are down to 4 or 5 players then we will have a final round where high score wins the game. |

I had to post the rules before the questions...some people are just too impatient.
After just 1 day we have 12 entries and some interesting results. Round 1 will close next Wednesday so try not to get too impatient.
To clarify a point, incorrect answers are NOT penalised. You simply get zero for an incorrect answer. |

All I mean is that I think a near-perfect score is more valuable in the later rounds when there are fewer people to score below me. Maybe I should ask Zag to come in here and do some statistics for me about this. _________________ Paragon Tally: 19 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

No statistics will save you from wrong assumptions. Whether a "near-perfect" score is "valuable" obviously depends on the scores of other people. This depends on the difficulty of the questions versus the knowledge of the players, not the number of the players. But obviously, you prefer to talk to Zag about statistics. _________________ Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur. |

Arguing in a mafia game isn't enough for you?
I only mentioned Zag because he is the one with whom I identify statistics. I know that other people do them--your tone suggests you do--but he's my first thought in such matters. As for whether my score is valuable, I think given a random question sample and a random player pool, the only thing that's going to make the difference is how many other people are playing. My statement also was made with the knowledge that I don't typically score well on these quizzes because I don't have an extensive "useless info" knowledge base. Therefore, this score would serve me better in the later rounds.
There's no wrong assumption yet. _________________ Paragon Tally: 19 mafia, 3 SKs (1 twice), 1 cultist, numerous chat scum...and counting. |

Olympiad III - Round 1 - Answers
1. The Oscar for best film director 2013 went to?
a: Michael Haneke
b: Ang Lee
c: David O'Russell
d: Steven Spielberg
Only 2 months since the announcement but it's easy to forget.
2. Lara Croft first appeared in a video game in which year?
a: 1990
b: 1993

d: 1999
A tough question as it's hard to remember a specific date.
3. Florida has land borders with how many states?
a: 1
b: 2
c: 3
d: 4
The first few answers suggested 3 so I had to go and double check. Many players had trouble with this...even Scurra.
Alabama and Georgia for those who didn't look it up.
4. The Scapula is found in which location?
a: Foot
b: Lower Back
c: Shoulder
d: Wrist
5. The Onager is an ancient weapon of which type?
a: Battering Ram
b: Catapult
c: Crossbow
d: Sword
Another toughie.
6. The Chinese flag is red with 5 stars of which colour?
a: Black
b: Blue
c: White
d: Yellow
Zag doesn't know his flags.
7. Bastille Day is celebrated on which date?
a: 21st May
b: 7th June
c: 14th July
d: 18th August
8. The first novel of the Discworld books (The Colour of Magic) was published in which year?
a: 1979
b: 1983
c: 1985
d: 1988
Topical since Discworld mafia is on at the moment. I'm impressed that so many got this right.
9. Twitter began on the 21st of March in which year?
a: 2000
b: 2002
c: 2004
d: 2006
Another tricky date question but most of you got it.
10. The chemical symbol for Magnesium is?
a: M
b: Ma
c: Mg
d: Mn
The only 100% correctly answered question.

Round 1 remained open until I had a reasonable gap from the last entry. Players will send answers immediately or not at all. It's not as if I'm not advertising it. I doubt that leaving the game open for another couple of weeks would have made much difference to numbers.
Then subsequent rounds remain open until I have answers from everyone...unless they're off the net for some unknown reason...but I will wait a reasonable amount of time.
For Round 2 I'm currently waiting for 6 players. That may take a few hours or may last until next week.
Sorry I can't be more definitive.
Zag: I know the feeling. I see my front door every day but I'm unsure what colour it might be. I think we just tune-out a lot of everyday stuff. |

Hmm, I didn't remember as such. I imagined the red flag with the black stars and it did not look right, dito for blue and white. Yellow felt alright. |
