Ok, this is my course of study so, I am willing to explain most if not all of Electronics and Computers. This thread will hopefully see no programming above 1st generation assembly (name a processor and I can assist you). When my feces co-agulate (ie. when I get my shit together), there will be a quiz.

Any programming in languages other than binary or assembly will be discouraged in this thread.

*raises hand*
Do you know of a good program (free, download or on-line) which will turn a truth table into simplified logic automatically? I had one many years ago (DigSimp), but it only ran on Macs, and I haven't seen it since.

Has assembler language changed much since it was last used EXCLUSIVELY as programming, rather than something to which other code is compiled? (I did an assembler course in 1987)

i think not much. I think ADD, ADC, IMUL and many others were kept from ancient times. Perhaps some new 'string' functions were added (like STOSB or some other contrieved names)

I was using a Z80 in 1987. Yes, my trusty TRS-80 was still was still functional. I haven't used assembly language since my TRS-80 days. I bought my first 8088 system from a friend who thoughtfully included Turbo Pascal which produced reasonably fast programs so I never bothered to get an assembler.

Ok, question: where can I learn about architecture of Intel chips? I'm learning SPARC right now, but my personal computer is running on an Intel (Pentium III), and I think it would be cool to compare the two. Does Intel have instruction pipelining like the SPARC architecture does?

What would you like to know?
Not sure that's a computer engineering question, maybe there should be a new thread. |
