There's this site I download text files from. If you click on a button it will give you all of the files for the day in a zipped file. The download options would come up and I could choose which directory I wanted to save the zipped file in. Click ok and it downloads.

At some point I accidentally clicked a different setting (open is my guess) and the check box that says something along the lines of "never ask for this type of file" or something. Now, it downloads the file to my temporary internet files and opens a window with the files in them.

I've tried to figure out how to reset the download settings to no avail. Searching the MS help DB for "download settings" is an exercise in futility. I'm about to save all the pertinent data from my desktop and documents to another folder and nuke the profile from another computer.

Anyone know the solution?

Dont know whether it will make a difference, but try clicking the "Restore Defaults" button on the Advanced Tab in "Internet Options" and in the "Programs" tab click "Reset Web Settings".

Surely when the file is downloading you can uncheck the checkbox?

Restore defaults: Nope
Reset web settings: Nope

While the file is downloading you see nothing. You don't see anything until it's been downloaded to a remote folder in temporary internet files. What you see is what you would see if you double clicked on a zipped file (I. E. a window with the contents).

Also, I made a new profile and it downloads the same. Must be a universal setting. I don't think nuking the All Users folder is a good idea though.

I'm sure it's somewhere in the registry. *shudder*

I managed to recreate the problem on my pc (WinXP), heres how you fix it. Open My Computer, click on the "Tools" menu, then "Folder Options". Once in there select the "File Types" tab and scroll down till you find the description for zip files. Select the zip extension and click "advanced" and then check the "Confirm open after download" box, click ok, click ok again. Now try downloading a zip file

It's a slightly different method in Win98 and ME, should be the same in Win2000 - but you should be able to find your way around.
