After switching from win98 to winXP, it seems that several programs do not run on XP. They open, then when they get to the point where the screen is about to open, they stop and close.
For example, when opening Kazaa, the title square pops up (The green one that says Kazaa version whatever) but then the program closes automatically and immediately. The little Icon that shows up in the taskbar tray sits there until you move the mouse over it, then it too disappears.
I run Kazaa through Diet K, which also closes along with Kazaa.
Quicktime also does this (which means i have been unable to watch EEEM's video thing) and Whenever i try to use DeadAim to clone AIM, it won't work. All the other DeadAim features work, except for the cloning.
Does anyone have any clue as to what might be causing this? It's incredibly incredibly annoying.

| First explain why you switched to XP. Did you know that I've never seen or heard of a person that actually praised their switch to XP? Sure I've met some that haven't complained or anything, but nobody has actually liked it. Why not just switch back? What was wrong with 98? |

| I like XP better than 98. I've had less problems. I didn't switch from 98 to XP on the same computer though. When I built my new computer I loaded XP Pro right off the bat. I don't know if some of the bugs exist through conflict with past versions of programs or something. Mine works great. |

We run XP at work. We used to run NT and they made us all switch. Generally it's OK once you get used to the new feel (or set it back to the classic look). Some network type things seem to take ages in XP when they didn't on NT though.
My home PC has ME on. It seems to be fine (once you upgrade the frankly useless versions of the office software they bundle with it).

On thing I hate about XP - and maybe there's a way to turn this off that I haven't found - is the way it treats zip files in File Explorer. It lets you browse them like folders. Trouble is, when I have a "download" directory loaded with zip files, it takes freaking forever to display the contents of the "downloads" directory, because XP looks inside every one of those zip files to see what's inside in case you want to browse them (which I never do).
I've also read some hilarious stories about people accidentally and unknowingly turning on XP's speech recognition feature, and then being frightened by the haunted behavior of their machine as it missinterprets whatever sounds are in the background (TV on?) and types them into whatever applicationn is open. |

Word, I had the same problem with Kazaa, all I did was simply reinstall it and it worked fine. As for Quicktime, it should be able to be fixed the same way. I know kazaa checks if your running win9x or winxp and installs accordingly. Also WinXP could have over written certain files in the system which can bork programs from time to time.
Don't about deadaim thou, never heard of it till now.
Extro: Do you have any zip programs installed, such as winzip or winrar? By the sounds of it, the system is defaulting to the system reader, rather than an external program. You may have to change the filetype actions in the Folder Options.

Mac: Because XP has more functionality and it's never crashed. With 98 I would get the blue screen of death at least once a week if not more. Also NFTS, need I say more?

| Most programs dont have a problem, anyway xp generates a report of which programs wont work correctly (as it does with hardware). But most of the time its quite simple to get them working. |

I tried reinstalling Kazaa. It worked twice after the installation, then started acting up *again* when i tried the third time.
Quicktime has never worked, and i tried installing that one again too.
DeadAim is bascially a program that runs with AIM and supresses the extra crap you don't need on your buddy list, keeps logs of IM's, and other stuff, and the coolest part, imo, is that it lets you run more than one sn at a time. (except that on both of my XP computers it doesn't do that. just that one part.)

[edit: must be distracted... never got to the point of my post...]

| word: get Kazaa Lite K++. That's what I use (I have XP Pro as well), and it works perfectly fine. Can't speak for DeadAIM, though...it sounds interesting. I might go find it and check it out. I'll let you know if I have any problems. |

Mac: I don't remember saying there was anything wrong with 2k. The issue was 98, which is buggy and old and generally has holes my fat ass grandma could fly through. Why bring up 2k? It's practically the same thing as XP, y0

Sessie: DeadAim from its website now costs money for the latest version, and does not have previous versions to install. You can still find the old version here though, if you want

| I thought XP was great, until something that I can't quite track happened. Now I get a crash at least once per week, usually from some system file, and always after downloading the automatic microsoft update. |

| One of the "recommended updates" I regretted was upgrading to Windows Media Player 9. Movies that played before wouldn't play, and some would crash XP, every time. The worst of it all was that it's incredibly difficult to revert back - you can't just uninstall Media Player 9 - no such option. I finally managed to do it - back to version 8, and everything's fine. But it was a major pain in the neck. |

I love XP. I wouldn't go back to 2K, NT, ME, 98, 95, or 3.1... well... I might go back to 3.11. |

Extro:
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll
That disables the zipfolders. If you use system restor, set a restore point right after doing that, otherwise WinXP will revert at some point.
You may need to rename that .dll after you do it as wel, just to be sure.

And for those with WinXp that keeps crashing, try this:
Start ==> Run ==> type in "sigverif.exe" (of course without the quotes). That'll check if the drivers you are using are Windows Hardware Qualified. If not, try and find newer/different drivers. |
