Scientific American: Atoms of Space and Time

We perceive space and time to be continuous, but if the amazing theory of loop quantum gravity is correct, they actually come in discrete pieces.

What do you guys think of this? Personally, it shakes the foundation of how I percieve the world, and is a little bit scary. Is it just me?

They say nothing about the theory. Is it a new theory? There are a lot of allegedly viable "oddball" theories that have been around for a while. String theory is the best known and gets the best publicity by far, but there are others (that I know nothing about), e.g., Penrose's "twistor theory."

Since I can't read the whole article, I have to ask: How is this new? I think I remember first learning about the Planck scales while reading pulp sci fi novels when I was 8 or 9. Is this different?

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the existence of the Planck scales doesn't immediately imply that space and time are quantized, at least not in the way that they mean.

Sorry about the link, that's what I get fpr following instructions. I read the article in a hard copy of SciAm, but couldn't find the same article online. The link Bicho posted is good.

This is the first theory to suggest that time/space are quantized. The size of the 'quanta' of time/space happen to be about Planck sizes.

The thought of time moving forward in small, undivisible ticks is very eery to me. I think that it reminds me of something that has been created, rather than naturally occurred. This is a very strange thought for an atheist, IMO. I am having trouble with it.

Actualy there is no time...time is man made and generated for Earth commerce. You are just where you are...confusing this is the cycles you observe as aging thats a biological cycle that happens to read it you invented time. Aeighter comunication is one to one no delay to all points of the Galaxy using rope-pull tecnology not radio vibrations. Just a simple thought to help thinking
