I’m doing something right now that I will be unable to do for very much longer. That is - visit the GL at work. Last week at a staff meeting we were told very soon we’d be getting a program for all our sites called ‘Little Brother’ which will monitor every user’s internet usage. That is- where they’ve been, how many visits to each site they’ve had, how long they’ve been there, etc. Our policy is users can use non-official (so long as they’re non-offensive) websites on a very limited basis so long as it occurs during a lunch hour or on a break. And as I’m part of the department that’s supposed to enforce this policy, my superiors are going to be making sure we aren’t using a double standard for ourselves so it’d be best if I was on less than that. Thus I may be visiting even less than I have the past couple months, since I’ll be limited to mostly posting from home and tieing up my only phone line. Anyone else have policies like this a work? (if you know what your company’s policy is, that is)
In the meantime, see ya from home

| My work had the program running to monitor internet access, but they didn't really restrict our usage. I was just curious about the program 'Little Brother' though, cause at my company they called it 'Big Brother'. Is it the same thing? |

Mine just piles up the data and only check them when they want an excuse to fire someone.
Im sure I would set all sorts of new records when mine gets checked.

| I used to wonder whether my company monitored e-mail messages, so I put 'Resume' or 'Controller Position' as the subject for personal e-mail messages about cub scouts or whatever. I don't know if it set off any alarms. They're probably thinking "No wonder that bum is still here. He's sending his resume to his kid's den mother." |

There's a program called SessionWall that does that. I installed a demo version on my office machine at my last job, and I could see every web page people were visiting, as well as things like yahoo passwords. The real version also displays all email (the demo replaces the email text with asterisks, but lets you see the from, to, subject, etc.). After I saw how easy it was to watch what other people were doing, I was a little less comfortable goofing off on the web.
For a few bucks, you can make it impossible for them to see where you're going or what you're viewing (zeroknowledge.com or anonymizer.com have premium services that encrypt everything both ways), but they'll know you're hiding something.
I use PGP to encrypt all personal email. |

| Soma, what line of work are you in? We will simply takl about it in the off-topic and this site will be officially 'related'. That is what I tell my boss. I am into instruction and I point proudly to the 'education' section. I just hope they don't notice the number of posts next to the education site compared to the puzzle section.... |

Logain, I'm not sure, it was just called Little Brother by our I.S. manager. Once the software's installed I may have a better idea.
FMB, I'm in Information Systems work (i.e. computer support). I suppose if there was a new forum created about supporting networks... hmmm... I still don't know if they'll buy it.

Hey_Soma,
I also work in computer support, and my time online is about to get drastically cut too, but for a different reason. I am currently 9 weeks into an 11 week night shift covering for a co-workers sabbatacle.
Night shift is booooring, so I got to spend a lot of time here. When I go back to days I will be too busy to come here. And although my wife has grown attatched to this site reading over my shoulder, she thinks I spend way too much time here.
Here's hoping your 'little brother' gets sent to camp |
