Yeah... yeah. I'm taking a bartending course, and I have an assignment. It's nothing too hard or anything, I'm designing a cocktail list - it's for a poolside bar at a Cairns resort.

I don't have any trouble thinking of cocktails or anything, but I want to get a kinda popular opinion on what cocktails people think are really good. And of course, GLers are the smartest people I know.

So yeah, things to keep in mind: I need five classic cocktails, and several (I'm aiming for five of those as well) kinda new and exciting ones that people don't know too much about yet. Also, because it's a tropical kinda thing happening, I'm looking mainly for aperitifs and fruity, cool kinds of drinks.

So, what's everyone's favourite cocktail?

White Russians (with either vodka or cocunut rum), Long Islands, Piņa Coladas liquid cocaine shots and mind eraser shots.

Ooh, good. I had a couple of those in mind in any case. The Pina Colada is pretty much a definite, what with being classic, popular, delicious and tropical.

Also, while I'm posting, like I said above, I'm looking for new or different cocktails - so if anybody has heard of any that sound good (and preferably tropical), mention those too, so I can look them up 'n' stuff.

Can't go wrong with Kamikaze -- vodka, triple sec, lime juice. Strain it over ice but don't serve on the rocks. Or better yet, keep the vodka in the freezer.

"Appletinis" are a big thing around here right now. Don't know if they're tropical enough though.

My mother recommends a Golden Cadillac (Galliano, white creme de cacao, and light cream).

The Flamboyant

Equal parts rum and blue curacao, topped up with about the same amount of pineapple juice, served on ice.

I myself like the classics--gin and tonic, martini, that sort of thing. (And a martini has gin and vermouth. No vodka. No sour apple anything, nothing red, nothing with chocolate, no wapiti.)

I always though kamikazes were equal parts sub-zero temp Absinth and Tabasco. So when you drink skull it you spiral to the deck in a ball of flames Oh, and Mackay, try the golden book called 'the Felafel's guide to gettin completely wasted' by John Birmingham. Can't go wrong

car bomb/jaeger bomb.

this one is easy.

You take a pint of Guiness (that's a beer), but only fill it up 3/4 of the way.

Then you fill up a shot of jagermeister (eew).

Then, you drop the shot into the Guiness and chug.

Whooweee!

and Redbull with Vodka is suprisingly good. But drink too much of that and your heart will pop right out through your back (because you'll be laying face down).

Vinny!

I had that car crash drink in several bars in New York, and it never occured to me to ask them how they make it, until after I left. I thought it was great, and now thanks to you (and Mackay, of course ) I know how to make it. Huzzah huzzah, and so on.

'Posh and Becks' is a big thing around here at the moment. It's a play on a famous couple from Blighty, Victoria Beckham (Ex-Spice girl) and David Beckham (English football captain and all round top international player, and one of the football faces of Pepsi).
The drink itself is a tall glass half filled with Champaigne then topped up with Becks lager. It really is rather good actually but expensive.

The car bomb is actually a pint of guinness with a shot of half whiskey, half baileys dropped in it. It is supposed to taste like chocolate milk (so my friends say) but I can't drink it fast enough for it to be any good. It is not a sipping drink.

oops, mikegoo is right it is whiskey not yeager.

A jager bomb is a shot of jager droped in a glass of red bull.

Sex on the Beach is certainly appropriate for a resort--and definitely fruity. (I myself also rather like fuzzy navels--OJ and peach schnapps, for anyone who doesn't know. Of course, being from Atlanta, I also like the "Atlanta Georgia": Coke with peach schnapps. Most people think I'm weird.)

I myself am skeptical of anything that combines beer with anything, including other beer. And anything with more than three (or maybe four) ingredients. Keep it simple, keep it straightforward.

Worst drink I ever made!

"MARTIAN GO HOME:"

a few ounces vodka
a few ounces pineapple juice
and some green Kool-Aid

Just mix the whole thing in a blender -- BLEACCH! Of course, it didn't help that the ingredients weren't cold. BLLLLEAAAH.

I don't know what vodka tastes like (http://talk.thebabycorner.com/images/smilies/angel.gif), but I do like pineapple juice, and in my experience Kool Aid tastes like nothing, so at what point did that go wrong?

Ever had any alcohol Courk? Because unless you buy a more expensive vodka, they all taste of a burning sensation as it goes down with no real taste whatsoever, just the kick.
