Here's an excerpt from TLC that you guys might enjoy.
Originally posted by The Last Continent, Terry Pratchett:
"'s okay, I like parrots," mumbled Rincewind, who was just hoping that they would let him go so that he could hold on to the ground again. "Er ... what's Ecksian for going mad with terrified fatigue and collapsing in a boneless heap?"
The men looked at one another.
"Isn't that 'snagged as a wombat's tonker'?"
"No, no, no, that's when you chuck a twister, isn't it?" said Clancy.
"What? Strewth, no. Chucking a twister's when ... when you ... yeah, it's when you ... yeah, it's when your nose ... Hang on, that's 'bend a smartie' ..."
"Er---" said Rincewind, clutching his head.
"What? 'Bend a smartie' is when your ears get blocked underwater." Clancy looked uncertain, and then seemed to reach a decision. "Yeah, that's right!"
"Nah, that's 'gonging like a possum's armpit,' mate."
"Excuse me---" said Rincewind.
"That ain't right. 'Gonging like a possum's armpit' is when you crack a crusty. When you ears are stuffed like a Mudjee's kettle after a week of Fridays, that's 'stuck up like Morgan's mule.'"
"No, you're referrin' to 'happier than Morgan's mule in a choccy patch' ---"
"You mean 'as fast as Morgan's mule after it ate Ma's crow pie.'"
"How fast was that? Exactly?" said Rincewind.
They all stared at him.
"Faster'n a eel in a snake pit, mate!" said Clancy. Don't you understand plain language?"

What Mackay was saying about nick-names is quite true. The derrivations of my name are Hughsie/Hughsy for my surname and Poida for my first. The derrivation of the first name is what would be reffered to as a special case, the furthest back I can trace it is to a comedic representation of the stereotypical Aussie bloke. He was always seen carrying a mini-eskie with a six-pack of VB or a slab of XXXX.
On the topic of this afternoon. Up here in toad land we only say 'sarvo'. As in "what you doing sarvo?". Oh, and to go crazy or loony here is to go 'berkers'. A shortened form of bezerk. And to tell someone not to go over the top you say "Don't go silly".
And Mackay, the Origin is ours this year, just like every year

"It's POITAH!" I love that show.
Tensh, if the pattern over the past few years is anything to go by, then Origin will indeed be yours this year. But who believes in patterns?! New South Wales are going to kick your arses!! It's going to be interesting being a Cockroach in Cane Toad country for the first time ever. I have to say though, we're going to suffer miserably from the loss of Joey Johns. I'm a Knights supporter too, so it's doubly tragic...
Anyway - Go the Blues! |

Oh, and not only was that a total hijack (if one can hijack one's own thread), but I'd completely forgotten this thread. Maybe Tenshi can suggest some things to teach while I'm semi-absent.
Oh, here's a lesson it'll do y'all well to remember:
New South Wales: good
Queensland: bad |

Tenshi's Australia 101
Lecture 1
We are not all random ocks. Steve Irwin is not an acurate representation of the average bloke and we do not ride kangaroos to work. If I have time and am awake early enough I will get you some photos of the wallabies in my back yard, but animal life in the back garden is not common in suburban centres.
The most important comment you can remember is definately 'Go the mighty Maroons!'. To be said at every opportunity during origin season when footy fever is rife. Some rather disreptuable people might tell you that the Blues are the correct team to barrack for but they are either deluded or lying . When watching australia slam the competition in sport, the correct phrase is for one person to shout "Ozzy Ozzy Ozzy", the for the crowd to reply with "Oi Oi Oi".
Thats all for now, any questions?

Because I have no idea where else to post this - Tenshi, HOW GOOD was the Knights/Broncos game on the weekend?! I'm a Knights supporter, personally, but I'm not saying this to rub it in or anything, it was just a really excellent game of footy. The most fitting end would have been a draw, imo - the "golden point" thing is pretty stupid, I reckon - but hey, who's complaining? |

I think the Broncos would have won if we had Gordon 'Big "The raging bull" Gordy' Tallis and webce wasn't injured. Good game though

HAH! Never mind that we were missing Johns, O'Davis, Kennedy, Hughes, Simpson, and a whole bunch of others I can't remember. And played with only two on the bench because of the early injuries! Pah. No excuses. |

| Any of you Downunderers know what became of that guy "Jacko" (no, not the US version) who used to do the battery commercials in the late 80's? He was a big burly guy with spiky blonde hair who liked to punctuate a sentence with a hearty "OY!" |

We'll still win, Tenshi. Right, Aaron? Anyways, Simian, I know who you're talking about but I don't know too much about it. I'll ask my dad. (By the way, it was a different cafe. ) |

I noticed something about Australian pronunciation while I was trying to help WordX perfect his Aussie accent.
We drop our "R"s horribly. Pretty much any word that ends in "...[vowel]r" has the entire end of the word dropped in favour of the sound "ah". Not long and drawn-out or anything, just a short "ah" at the end of the word. For example, I would pronounce "jar" as "jah", the name "Peter" as "Petah", "indicator" as "indicatah", etc. Also, when "ar" is in the middle of a word, it tends to do the same thing (eg. "darts" being pronounced "dahts").
Just an observation. I sound like a pirate when I try to pronounce the "r"s though. "Jarrrrrr." "Darrrrrts." etc. Uh, yeah. [/random] |

| I can kinda do an American accent! Next time I have a mic or something available, I'll have to show it off. it's fun... I feel like I'm talking like a pirate with severe nasal congestion. |
