Vinny, did you even bother to read the Chess Problem Thread? I had hoped that I'd made it clear already, but let me say it once more, just to make sure:
Chess problems have absolutely nothing to do with the game of Chess, other than the fact that they use the same rules and pieces to express their ideas.
Sheesh...are you the sort of person who, if I gave you an invitation to take a tour of The Louvre, would say "Paintball games are lots of fun, but just looking at paint on a canvas is boring!"?
Ehhh, well I never really expected my Thread to be in serious competition with this one, it was all meant in the spirit of fun. I mean, come on--did you really think I believed that such things as Holzhausen Interferences and Tertiary Black Correction could compete against Hentai Tentacle Rape?
But I would ask that, next time you feel the need to both condemn a subject as 'boring' and simultaneously reveal that you really know nothing about that subject, that you do it in the proper thread. You'll note that there's been no judgements cast upon the value or 'boredom factor' of Anime in my thread.

| I thought the Chess Problem Thread was a far more interesting read. I think it fell into a graceful decline, not because it was uninteresting, but because none of the rest of us have any idea what kinds of questions to ask. |

Thank you for completely missing the point, Ih8. Let me put it this way:
Yes. Anime is boring. It's always boring. The plots are hackneyed, the characters trite, the animation crude and uninspired, and the whole atmosphere behind them clearly juvenile, and designed to appeal to a juvenile audience.
How do you feel about that statement? Aren't you glad I posted it here, so you could address it? Suppose I had chosen to post it in the Spelling 101 thread instead...do you think that might have been the more proper place to make such a comment? |

OK, to start (be prepared for a lot of quote tags):
| Quote: |
| (That's because Anime isn't ever boring.) |
1. The was my opinion, and it should not be regarded as proven fact under any circumstance.
2. This was supposed to be a joking comment, just thrown out there for fun. It's my fault for not adding a " " where it should have been.quote: Yes. Anime is boring. It's always boring. The plots are hackneyed, the characters trite, the animation crude and uninspired, and the whole atmosphere behind them clearly juvenile, and designed to appeal to a juvenile audience.
How do you feel about that statement?
I can live with it. It's an opinion. Just because I don't believe it doesn't take away your right to say it.
| Quote: |
| Aren't you glad I posted it here, so you could address it? |
Not really. As I said, it doesn't really matter to me what you think.
| Quote: |
| Suppose I had chosen to post it in the Spelling 101 thread instead...do you think that might have been the more proper place to make such a comment? |
No, it wouldn't have been a proper place, as my thread was (probably) not mentioned there. However, the Chess Puzzles thread WAS mentioned here, allowing people to go slightly off-topic and comment on it. I see no problem.
Oh, and I think that the Chess Puzzles thread was a great idea. It's really a shame that I don't know enough about them that I could add to the questions and answers.
---
Just to be safe, I'm adding this: There is no sarcasm intended in the non-quoted lines.

You're safe--I took no offense at your comments. And I would hope you took no offense at mine, as they don't really reflect my opinions, but were merely made to help illustrate a point. But then, you said it really doesn't matter to you what I think, so perhaps that reassurance was unnecessary.
And actually, that bit does bother me a little. You see, it does matter to me what others think, at least in regard to Chess Problems*; that of course is obvious from my somewhat rabid response to poor Vinny's offhand comment, as well as your jesting remark. Yes, I realized it was said in jest, but I felt the unstated implication (Chess Problems may be boring on occasion, Anime never is.) needed to be addressed.
Had someone posted a diatribe against Chess Problems analogous to the one I posted against Anime, I'd probably have prepared a fiery rebuttal to it even if I'd known it had merely been made for illustrative purposes. It's a little disturbing to see you respond with something as apathetic as 'I don't care what you think.' For gawds sake, man--work up a bit of passion for your subject!
* Try to avoid referring to them as 'Chess Puzzles'--many Problem composers find that term somewhat insulting. I imagine there are many in the field of Anime who would be equally insulted if you referred to their works as 'cartoons', yes? Unless they don't care what others think. |

Really, sorry you took my comment to heart, Coyote. That was totally aimed at Paul, not you. I was poking fun at him for his gloating (which is also in jest! Don't you start on me, Paul). I don't find Chess boring at all, games or strategy or puzzles or Art (ha!) or otherwise. Nor discussion on Go or Chiness Chess. I have gotten books on these subjects. If you think Chess's problems are interesting, you should try dwelling into classic Go's problems too. Those tear me a new bumhole. I think you'll find them interesting also. Maybe casinopete should start a thread. He's the resident Go expert.
Sorry for cross-thread referencing, but like casinopete said, it just doesn't seem appropriate to post stupid smartass comment in your thread.
Again, sorry.

Uhh... BACK TO ANIME! (Geez, this is the second time I'm doing this.)
We (my two friends and I) just finished an Anime/MTG all-night party. We finished up Excel Saga, and another friend brought over some Anime called Puni-Puni Poemi. It's got a couple of resemblences to Excel Saga, but I highly advise that nobody under the mental age of 20 see this Anime, and, if you happen to watch it, do so with extreme caution. And a sturdy chair. You will be laughing your ass off.
After that, we played some magic, watched Dave play .hack// Mutation, and fell asleep. When we woke up, we started watching El Hazard. Nobody really liked it, so we turned it off after the first episode (which was 45 minutes long). Nothing much really happened afterwards, so they all went home.
And that was about it.

Two movies that I haven't seen mentioned that I think are worth seeing are Barefoot Gen and Millennium Actress.
Be warned, Barefoot Gen about a little boy who lives in Hiroshima in 1945 and it gets HORRIBLY depressing. Millennium Actress has a... bittersweet I guess you would call it, ending but is a fun watch.
Also, if you want to try a cool blend of live action and CGI anime, look for a film called Avalon. It's by the same guy who did Ghost in the Shell.
Let's see, what else:
Blue Submarine Number 6
Hellsing (haven't watched it yet but have very recommendations from friends
Full Metal Panic, which I think was mentioned earlier
Vampire Hunter D
Big O, nice series but ended weird
Read or Die, excellent fun stuff. |

| I enjoyed it. Very sweet in a Totoro way. Nary a giant robot or vampire to be seen. Probably a bit treacly and overblown for some people. It did seem to run about 20 or so minutes longer than it should have. Absolutely gorgeous visually. |

On the topic of Hentai I have two comments. One is that the people who watch it tend to be smelly and unwashed. This view is based on a place where I play MTG. I started having a go at slash and Hgames and he tried to defend them. He was smelly and unwashed imo so thats who they are for. Also check the direct translation of the japanese word hentai. It means pervert! Even the japanese realise that anime and hentai are different and go down pretty hard on it in most civilised circles.
I personally rate Perfect Blue as the best anime I have ever seen. I have never seen a show/movie leaving me more confused yet so engrossed. It is definately not kiddie safe though, unless you like you kiddies seeing bubble gum pop princesses acting in a rape sequence for a tv show. Yes, this movie is odd but is absolute gold.
Also, in reference to Ninja Scroll. The only thing I really know about it is the earth elemental scene (if you have seen it you should know what I mean). Is it worth watching or is it a purile gore/sex fest?

I liked the characters in Ninja Scroll, and it has a pretty good story.
Saw Cowboy Beebop the first five eps last night. Very good stuff, especially eps 5. Are they going to show more of Spike's past in later episode, because they only showed a montage of it. [Was he used to be in some chinese gang before he became a cowboy?] |

| I saw an episode of FLCL on cable last night (3:00 AM, cartoon channel) - weird and interesting. Guy get's clonked on head by strange girl (I didn't get enough of the context from the one episode to figure out the nature of her strangeness) and ends up with this protrusion that sticks out of his forehead, but which he can push back in and keep in if he covers it with a bandage (which he does). Very strange. I couldn't find any other time it's being aired in the next week though. |

If you saw the whole episode, just watch the rest of the series(there's only 6 episodes). Most of the series will be explained in itself. Anything else that you have trouble with, just ask me. I know a LOT about that show. (It's my favorite show. ever.)
FLCL aires on Cartoon Network's [adult swim] at 12:00midnight and reruns at 3:00am late Saturday night / early Sunday morning. (Episode 2: FiSta (Fire Starter) will air the night of May 1st.)

Hentai is cool, I'm not into the tentacle aspects though.
It's better than non anime ADULT shows because you can get some really good plots. Like helping humanity save the world from giant plants that happen to be like a male penis, or fighting crime etc.
Plus, you can over come the limits of the physical body and mind in anime.
Now questions:
Who are the "evil" characters in Inu Yasha?
Who are the "good" characters in Inu Yasha?
Do you recommend Saber Marionnette J (or anyother of the series) despite not having it on your list?
Have you ever heard of Hime Chan no ribbon(Manga)? |

Welcome to the boards, Paige!
"Good" characters: Kagome, Inu-Yasha, Myoga, Kikyo, Shippo, Miroku, Sango, Kaede, Koga*
"Bad" characters: Naraku, Kagura, Sesshomaru, Koga*
*Koga is kind of both, as Inu-Yasha and Koga always seem to get into a fight. Looking from Kagome's POV, Koga is good, and Inu-Yasha is unobservant. Looking from Inu-Yasha's POV, Koga is just trying to get in his way (and is also trying to steal Kagome from him. Ah, secret love.)
I've never heard of Saber Marionette J. If it's ever aired on TV or if my friends start buying it, I would definitely start watching it(The majority of the anime I've seen was borrowed from my friends.) I've looked at some reviews, but the only way to decide if I like it is to watch it myself.
I've never heard of Hime Chan no Ribbon, but it sounds sort of like a Ranma type show (it is also a TV show), and if it aires on TV or I can borrow it, I would most likely start watching/reading it.
Just an update on some stuff on Cartoon Network's [adult swim]
Weeknights (excluding fridays. Times are Eastern/Pacific)

All episodes are re-aired 3 hours after the time marked above (Wolf's Rain aires at 11:30 and 2:30).

[/skips amusing tentacle commentary] How did these epilepsy-inducing "alternate colours really realy fast" explosions come to be? Are they a pop version of the oh-so-popular "whiteout" really big explosions? And are the latter some sort of formalised upsession stemming from being on the receiving end of nukes?
