do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs? I remember when the only tape was reel to reel, and the advent and demise of 8-track tape.
are you familiar with cga graphics? not really
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks? of course.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)? never played them, but played Zork and Planetfall when they first came out
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters? Hasn't everyone?
have you ever bragged about your new 286? I first bragged about my Apple II-e and later was lucky to get to use a Compaq portable that weighed about 30 pounds
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard? It was great when they suddenly gave us the option of color. We could chose between green and orange.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs? I had to stand in line in college to feed them through the card reader at the computer lab at Cornell. I remember kids collapsing into blubbering heaps when they dropped a stack of two or three hundred.
You guys meet tons of people through the Internet. I met and dated a girl whom I met through the Arpanet in 1977.

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Yes, I was playing a tape just the other day . We have two huge box's full of the old vinyls, and two record players
are you familiar with cga graphics?
In all it's four colour mayhem
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
How could I not? I grew up on a Commodore 64!
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
They still are the best games ever, although Im alittle hazey about MI4
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Nope
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
Only ever owned one, but we had a 486DX2-50 back then, so what use was the 286?
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
My first 486 had a monochrome monitor, but I never considered them standard, as I used computers with vga monitors
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
No, but my uncle did on an old IBM Mainframe

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Of course. I'm old.
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Nope. No clue.
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Yes, and cutting them in two if they had sensitive info and needed to be destroyed.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
No, I do not play computer games.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
No, see above.
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
No, my first PC was a Dell. In 1999.
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Sure.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
What Quailman said.
4/8, or actually 4/6 seeing I don't do computer games anyway. |

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Of course. Although I haven't owned a tape in over 6 years now and no longer even own any type of tape deck
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Yep. Still remember EGA too. What were they? Cyan, magenta, white and ummm, black?
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Like Planky, I grew up on the C64. Had over 700 games...100 of which were even legal
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
MI2 is still the best. I didn't like the cartoonish graphics in 3 and 4. And like Quailman, I remember when Infocom games were huge
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Nope.
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
No to this too. My first PC was a 286. When I upgraded to the 486/DX2, then I bragged
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Not really, because of the above. My first PC was a 286 with 256 color VGA. I felt bad for my friend who had the orange monochrome monitor, and a lot of my school computers were green monochrome
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
Before my time I guess

Of course..and the only way to get songs onthose tapwes was to sit next to the radio with your fingers poised on the "REC" and "PLAY" buttons, an dhope the DJ wouldn't blab through the intro of the song
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Of course....
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
I remember the flopticals, they weren't all that floppy.. they were huge though
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
MI sux... I grew up with Tanks on the Atari, and later Raid Over Moscow... loaded from the same tapedeck I used in Question #1
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
I close my eyes and still see them
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
No.. I had the same Apple as Quailman, then moved on to a 486 DX/2-66

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
I remember as if it were yesterday..oh, it was yesterday...I still buy vinyl
are you familiar with cga graphics?
naturally I remember cga, ega and vga, but I couldn't tell you what was what
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
I remember working on Computer Advisory at University, and a girl saying it had got the disc, stuck in the drive. So I checked it out and she had taken the magnetic disc bit,(using scissors) out of it's protective casing, not the wrapper or paper sleeve, but the actual matte, plastic cover. She then proceeded to try to shove it in the 5.25" slot.D'oh
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
No, but I thought Manic Miner was about as good as it was going to get.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
No, but I do remember a Star Wars ascii thing
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
No, I was dead posh, I bragged about my 386sx, with a whole 100mb hard disk
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Well, they were standard weren't they. I remember thinking the green ones were as cool as could be though
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
Yes, on an old Misomex Step and Repeat machine, which we still have a work believe it or not....in fact...
we still have the punch machine itself, but I couldn't find any 'programmed cards'

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
I bet everyone around here except maybe pika remembers at least tapes. I still play vinyls all the time. And I have a reel to reel. We fairly recently sold a car that only had an 8-track player in it. I think I still have a box of 8-tracks in the attic.
are you familiar with cga graphics?
yes,but not because I really remember. Only because my brother is a computer geek. yeah yeah, so'm I.
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Heck yeah! I thought I was so cool trying to make those stupid things fit into the computers at school to play Oregon Trail. That game had 3 or 4 disks and now it wouldn't take up a quarter of a current floppy.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
No idea what that is.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Pacman Rocks!
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
I don't brag. Well, not about that.
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
I remember monochrome moniters. But I also remember color from the same time, so no.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
I have, but not because I had to. Someone I knew was refurbishing some old machines and let me play.
So I'm a 5... and only 18!

Yes to both
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Yes
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Yes, the 5¼ inch and 8 inch disks didn't have the hard plastic shell
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
I never played Monkey Island but I knew people who were playing it
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
No, but I played other games with ascii graphics or no graphics
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
I might have mentioned its amazing speed a few times
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Yes. I had my choice of amber text or green text at work
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
No, but I used black paper tape. It was one inch wide and data was stored on it by punching holes in it at ten bytes per second. It was read back by using pins to detect the holes. Later we got an optical reader that detected the holes by shining a light through them. It stored ten bytes to the inch. Sometimes hanging chad would cause a tape to be misread and it would have to be searched for and removed. If I wanted to store the contents of my current hard drive on that system I'd need 50,000 miles of tape and it would take a century to punch it. |

Well my IBM PS/2 286 came with an expanded memory card to go from 1 MB Ram to 2.5, so there I think I had a 30 MB hard drive.
Monkey Island was pretty late actually. Before that one I remember playing:
Maniac Mansion
Zak McKrackon & The Alien Mindbenders
King's Quest IV
Space Quest IV, then I (redone in 256 colors )
Leisure Suit Larry III

7/8, mainly because I've always been behind the times. I played with punch cards a bit as a kid, along with the '64, the Apple II, and finally the 286 at school - stuff that had been donated from companies that couldn't use them anymore.
My family's first computer, in 1995 (I think), was a 486DX-2. It was so ahead of it's time that I could actually buy games for it at the computer store. We didn't replace it until less than a year ago, and my sister is going to take it to school with her next year. |

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Yes, tapes and 45's. I've even copied a song from 45 onto a tape so I could play it for a school project. My teacher didn't know what a 45 was.
are you familiar with cga graphics?
No
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Yes.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
Probably not
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Not that I know of, but I have played pac man many a time
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
No, we didn't get a computer until 98-99 ish. PLus I'm not that old
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Almost. My grade school computer lab had all green monitors except for the 2 colored ones (I think it got blue, pink, brown, and green). They were in the back of the rooom, and being at the end of the alphabet, I usually got one
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
No
So I'm 2/8, 3/8.

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Tapes are still in use. Some people still swear by vinyl, though I found them tedious to take care of. I remember once trading 2 cans of beer for an 8-track player from some little kid on the street.
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Yeah.
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Yeah. 360kb 5.25"
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
Never heard of it.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Never saw such a thing. I played the original pong TV video game though. I suspect the original pacman came before any ascii variants though.
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
I skipped from an Atari 800 to a 386 (with a floating point co-processor!). I bragged about the co-processor - it allowed me to plot images of the mandelbrot set (fractals) that would not otherwise have been feasible.
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Standard what?
They were the standard, and only, kind of monitor once. I've used the green screen ones, and orange, and white. I had a green screen hooked to a 300k modem for dial-up to CUNY-VM (City University of New York), with access to BITNET.
But there were also tele-type printers that were used as terminals, so they weren't the standard terminal console device.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
Of course. And punched paper tape too. |

have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters? Yes
have you ever bragged about your new 286? No, I had an old Tandy (whatever speed that was), and then moved up to a 486 in 1995.
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard? I was using a colour monitor on my C64 when I used the old green or amber monochrome ones at university, so No.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs? No, but I did do a lot of "programming" by entering pages and pages of machine code into my C64 adn saving it, hoping I typed it rigth so the game or application would work.

Hell yeah. Good old adventure games day.

yup. the 5 & 1/2 kind. I remember how cool I thought the 4 1/4 were when I first saw them.

No, only played the first one a little.

No, I have played some weird typing games though. And space invaders. And some weird maze games. I was so very impressed with Alley Cats and Hard Hats.

No, but I have kicked it a few times. I did bragged about the 386 my uncle has, showing how cool Prince of Persia was to family members and friends.

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
My first 45 was, IIRC, Eddy Grant's Electric Avenue. I believe my second might have been INXS' The Devil Inside. I didn't buy a lot of music until college, really.
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Blocky goodness.
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
I used cartridges full of 8-inch floppies and big reels of magnetic tape at a textile plant for a summer job one year.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
No, but not because they were before my time.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Nope, But I played plenty of DND made of ASCII characters. And Circus Atari, made of blocky goodness. Mmmmm, Circus Atari.
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
I had one, but I don't think I ever bragged about it; I did brag about installing a math coprocessor in my 8086 myself, though. *shudder* Was I really that geeky?
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
No, I refused to accept it, while I stared morosely at my monochrome monitor.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
Nope... missed that one by a bit, happily.

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Music? Hell... I remember playing video games from tapes.
I still maintain that vinyls have better sound than CDs.
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Yup. I even remember the programs that would trick other programs into thinking I had EGA.
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
I remember when floppies where about twice as big as the floppies that you're thinking of (they were about nine inches accross... no I'm not talking about 5 1/4" floppies... I mean the REALLY big one) and they held about 1/5 as much. I remember when 1.44 meg floppies came out, and the computer world was amazed.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
Yes, and yes. I even defeated the sword master, and all I got was a lousy T-Shirt.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Yup.
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
Yup. 40 meg hard drive, one meg of extended ram, 2400 baud modem (now they're 56,600 for compairison). I was king of the neighborhood.
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Yes. They were.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
Not really, but I have played with such computers. This is a crappy question. Change it to "have you ever had to push 'play' to load a video game from a tape?"

The truth is, you could slit my throat, and, with my one last gasping breath, I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt.

do you remember playing music from tapes and vinyl discs?
Yes, and I still play music from vinyl discs. Most of the trance music singles are on vinyl (makes it easier to mix them ).
are you familiar with cga graphics?
Sure. Grand Prix I was cga, for example. Gotta love the purple, green, black and white.
do you remember the floppiness of floppy disks?
Yes, and making HD floppies out of DD floppies with the help of scissors.
have you completed any of the monkey island games (and thought they were as good as computer games would ever get)?
Absolutely, I completed all four of them.
have you played pacman with graphics made of ascii characters?
Yep, and if I look back at it, I can still hear the internal speaker .
have you ever bragged about your new 286?
Yes, a friend of mine had an XT and a couple of months later we got an AT which was twice as fast.
did you ever accept the fact that monochrome monitors were the standard?
Yes.
did you ever use punch card codes as computer programs?
Nope, I only learned about them in college.
7/8 ... and only 24.
