I bet this is one side effect of the Kyoto accord that Newzealanders weren't expecting...

NZ flatulence tax outrages farmers

New Zealand's farmers have criticised a proposed tax on the flatulence emitted by their sheep and cattle.
The move is part of the Wellington government's action to meet its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol on global warming.

Scientists estimate that methane emitted by farm animals is responsible for more than half of the country's greenhouse gases.

Flatulence from cows, sheep and other ruminants is a serious environmental problem, accounting for about 15% of worldwide emissions of methane - one of the most potent of greenhouse gases.

Last year New Zealand signed up to the Kyoto Protocol, and agreed to reduce production of such gases.

no, they should invest billions into inventing some form of strap-on containers, that would capture and store all biogas. we could in turn use this for heating. thus, energy money is saved, the greenhouse effect is diminished, there's no tax, and people walk around with gasbottles duct-taped onto their butts.

Well, taxing it is not exactly reducing the - eh - output, is it? Looks like another money making machine for the government to me.

Well, it will give the farmers an incentive to crack down on flatulant behaviour amoung their livestock. They've obviously been too lax about it up 'till now.

the farmers know their animals, right? so whenever one is about to violate the kyoto accord, they can run up with a lighter and save the world. they can even scream random slogans, such as: look at this one! almost a foot and a half! now there's a flame!! etc.

I think there should be mandatory vegetarianism. Cattle take 4 times as much grain in their lives than the meat they produce. By promoting mass vegetarianism we could cut down on both the polution from the cows, and world hunger..... Unless of course you like global warming and world hunger.... Heartless bastards

I think we should premote canibalism. Then we'll get rid of all the evil humans who are polluting the world, AND have more than enough food for everybody, *AND* save the cows and grain completely.
