Two weeks ago, a neighbour of mine was playing Tekken 3. I had heard of Tekken but never got around to actually play it. Normally I don't play such games. The last one I had played was the first Mortal Kombat game on the PC. But I really liked the moves and wanted to give it a try. So we took the game to my PS2 and started playing. It was great.

After that, we decided to buy Tekken Tag Tournament. At this moment, we're playing it at least four times a week. I'm also thinking about buying an adapter so we can play with four persons at the same time. Why didn't I play this game before? I missed out on a lot of fun.

I was wondering who else has played/is playing this game too. Does anyone know any cool tricks? Who's the best character to play with? At the moment, I'm trying to learn Forest Law's moves and combo's.

All the info you could ever want and then some

This game was basically a launch title (although a bit delaied IIRC), so most people who have any interest in it have already played it to death.

i hate when people sit and learn all the combos (my sister) and then complain when someone using the tried and tested method of button bashing and win (me )
just figure out what punch is, kick is. then try to do both at the same time in your opponents general direction, works a treat.
i had tekken 2, and a copied versin of 3 for my old ps, Jin, then do the dirty punch punch punch punch punch punch, and then they fall over, so punch them again.
gauranteed victory. does get boring after 5 minutes though

^_^ Tekken rocks!

*kicks Anna Williams around the screen*

If I get to a GL convention, we have to play that.

Heh.. there was a Tekkan Tag arcade game at my first job (movie theater), and i wasted so much money in that baby. Damn fine game (Tekkan 4, which they replaced Tag with in my final months is nothing in comparison). My favorite tag was Law and Lei (his stances are really good, once you learn them), but the ultimate pleasure was beating people with the clunky Gun Jack - God, talk about humilating.

Ahem. If. Uh. You were to actually play video games. Who does that? Psh.

I remember this game. Because of it, I'm the current fighting games champion of my family. Not that that's saying much, because everyone else in the house but my brother's useless at any kind of game, except shoot-em-ups.
Basically, the best character you can play with depends on your style of fighting. Mine's just speeding around the screen so no one can hit me, and then just kicking the opponent to death.

Thanks for the link, Death Mage! That was pretty usefull.

Macros, button bashing may work if someone hasn't played a lot, but most of the moves you make that way, are blockable. All you have to do, when someone's button bashing, is block and wait until you get a chance to hit back. That's what I learned the last two weeks anyway. I tried button bashing too, but the more experienced players beat the bajesus out of me. Knowing combo's on the other hand, works a great deal better. If someone blocks, you can grab him/her instead of hitting and continue hitting right after the throw. Though this might depend on which player you choose.

Kd, should we get to a GL convention, we'll go and look for an arcade for sure .

I learned quite some moves with Forest Law and started learning Lee now. They both have that quick fighting style. I really like Lee's "Hitman Stand" where he's like: "Please come closer and see what happens!". So I think I finally found my tag team.

I also bought a multi-tap last week. So now we're playing in pairs. This is even more fun, especially when you and your partner both know the tag moves (which I don't ). Now I'm definitely addicted to this game. A couple of days ago, Tekken 4 went platinum, so we're thinking about buying that one too. Which reminds me, why do you think Tekken 4 is less of a great game, Green Crayons? Is there really that big a difference between those two?

I think I can explain why T4 isn't as good, although GC may have different reasons to me... (This is a long post. I am a Tekken freak.)

Obviously, Tekken Tag has more characters available to select and more play options, but that's not the point. In Tekken 4, I personally feel the characters have become too developed in terms of their progressive storylines through each tournament, and some of the descriptions of each character and reasons for their entering the 4th tournament give the impression that Namco have been clutching at straws, trying to find something new for each character.

For example, Paul Phoenix has appeared in every tournament. His basic story is that he has a strong desire to win, but he never does, and so he comes back each year, stronger than ever. Now, this could have just been re-used in T4, and nobody would have had a problem with that, but Namco had to try and make it more interesting. They told us that Paul thought he'd won T3 by defeating Ogre (the final level, for non-Tekken freaks). This we could have believed... but then there was the slight problem of him re-entering as a basic character, rather than as a boss. So, we are then told that upon winning, Paul leaves straight away... not realising Ogre isn't actually dead... and someone else finishes Ogre off and wins the tournament. Paul, upon hearing this, gets very mad that he didn't win, and (gasp) decides to re-enter in the next tournament !

It's a bit of a long example to use, but Namco have definitely gone too far in an attempt to make the characters complex, and therefore more human.

Another problem I have with T4 is that it's not about the fighting any more. T1 and T2 were great, if a little blocky, because they were just about pummelling your opponent, T3 became a little jokey (as this was when the storylines started to play a bigger part), but TTT was brilliant, if not an excuse to bring all the dead fighters back. The thing about T4 is that it's overdone the visual things. Sure, the backgrounds are spectacular, and yes, the characters look awesome and move realistically, but at times it tends to distract you from the imminent thrashing of your opponent. Where once a gamer would say 'Damn, I got kicked into a fountain again! Better hit back with a combo...', the phrase now is 'Cool! Look at the water ripple when I fall over!'

The Tekken series is undoubtedly great, that's definite. The characters are all unique, the involvement of the gamer with their character of choice intenisifies with each development, and to watch two experienced players battle is an amazing experience. I just think that Namco have overdone it with T4, and it's a shame, because it should really be the best game yet.
