When doing a search, I think the default search should be for "Posts" not topics.

The following only concerns mods:
When moving a thread, I think the following defaults should be applied.

Default Move To forum should be "Spam," since most thread moves are moved there.

Default "Leave Shadow Topic in Old Forum" should be unchecked.

If you have a problem with any of these changes, speak now or forever hold your peace. I'll wait a week or so, and then implement the changes.

The 'shadow topic' one I definitely agree with. It's just annoying to have to uncheck it every time. The "Spam" thing will just make it that much faster. =)

No real opinion on posts vs. topics, I search for both with about equal frequency. I doubt you'll get any protestations from the mods about your proposed spam removal changes. Sounds great.

The search function is the only thing I see anyone having a problem with. To me, it just seems pointless to search for posts, as clicking on the link doesn't take you to the post, so you have to find that post, and then it might not even be the post you wanted. Felicitous

Do you mean it seems pointless to search for topics? If not, I'm confused.

(No problem with the spam changes, obviously, I was meaning to suggest the no-shadow-as-default thing myself a few weeks ago and forgot.)

Yeah, that's what I meant. Topic searching is pointless (unless you're searching for a thread, which usually doesn't work anyway.) Revenge most foul!

Well... I think it's safe to say that the Spam problem was a lot better than it was? Ecstatic Happiness

As for the default behaivor of searching... I'll do that now. *nudge*

Oh yeah. I think I'm going to change it back to default "leave shadow topic in old forum."

Makes more sense since that feature will only be used when a topic is in the wrong forum now.

Okay, both of these are done.

Mods/Admins... And actually anyone who wants to pitch in...

currently, the admin section of the thread looks a bit like this:

(Delete Thread) (Move Thread) (Lock Thread) (Split Thread) (Mark Spam)

Now you don't have to be an art major to see that the spam icon is a bit out of place. I haven't deluded myself into thinking that it's nice looking. Only Mods/Admins can see it, but it would be nice to have a better looking icon.

Anyone who wants to submit an icon can feel free to do by posting it here--if you're unable to do so, just send me an email with the icon attached, and I'll get it hosted for you. I only ask that it be not one of the other icons, and that it work well with them. The height of the icon should be 18px. The width is variable, but I'm thinking not more than 30px.

Whichever one looks the best will be used. If there are a few which are just awesome, then we'll have a poll or something. Good luck you artsy types.

Honestly, if I had ANY talent whatsoever in the art area I would have come up with something a lot prettier. It'll work for now though.

Can something be done about the message when we use the icons? Right now it looks like this:

The selected topics have been moved. to the spam forum!

Can it just be one sentence with no bolding?

I *could*... It grabs that "The selected topics have been moved." from a language file. I just added the "to the spam forum" part in the actual script. I could insert a new line in the language file which has the entire message, but I didn't want to mess with the language file at all--since other language files wouldn't have that line in them... I only put that in there so that if a mod accidentally moved a forum, they'd know where it went.

So, basically, no, whiny mod, we can't. Razz

Is there any reason that mods should *not* be allowed in the Spam forum? They might accidentally send a thread to the spam forum, and it would be nice if they could retrieve it.

Mods shouldn't be allowed in the SPAM forum because that is where all the cool kids hang out. Is there a reason that any user who wants access shouldn't be allowed in it?

Mods still cool! You pay later! Wink

The reason everyone isn't allowed access is that we don't want google to be able to index it (as it would defeat the purpose of the forum.)

I don't see any problem with allowing Daedalian and above access to the forum. (but that's an idea that's already been scoffed at.

I originally set it up so all mods can see the Spam forum. I applied it individually to each user's permissions not to their group membership. So if someone's been added, they probably won't see it.

I remember at least one mod requesting to not see it (which is why I applied it individually vice globally), but I don't recall who requested that.

What an odd request...

Well, mods, if you're unable to see the spam forum, contact an admin and we'll get you set up.

Okay, that should fix it doll. I could not find a mod in the mod list who wasn't allowed access in the spam forum. All the mods currently in the mod list are now allowed access, and I'm about to make the entire group mods of the spam forum. If this is offensive, let me know. *nudge*

I did not. I considered it, but, as I've said in the past, it's too easy to fake an IP (I'm fairly certain that Will is not (as his posts show) in Japan), so auto-banning IPs is pointless--and, in fact, banning IPs in general is pointless.

I'm not for auto banning either. It's something that begs for problems. If I, or you, or some other dumbass admin bans an IP, at least we thought about it. And I don't like the idea of banning an IP without due consideration.

But banning is not pointless. Unblocked spammer IPs typically re spam in an hour or two (I assume this is them recycling their lists). A blocked IP has to use another, more time consuming algorithm. And aside from professionals, it seems to have worked really well against AP who IMO was far more annoying.

It's not a solution. But it's not pointless.

The problem with us banning the IPs is that they will start using random, fake, IPs from the beginning. This causes us to not block them, but a random IP.
