And here I thought we'd be over that shit. It was bad enough the last two elections.

I think the respondents are confusing "Acorn was up to some shady shit" (near 100% I'd say) and "Acorn actually accomplished something big" (highly unlikely)

When my wife and I got home last night around 7:00PM, a huge bald eagle was perched on the ridge of our roof. We got out of the car and watched him sit there for a minute or two and then watched him take off and fly over our heads. It was a once in a lifetime thing, and I really can't describe it very well. All I can say is "WOW".

That is cool, Pablo! I managed to resist saying when you posted the webcam into the eagle's nest, which was also very cool, but my resistance has broken down.

If we had the government that you espouse, Pablo, bald eagles would have been extinct some time ago. Liberals pushing through legislation restricting businesses to protect their habitat has only just barely come in time to save the eagles. It still isn't clear that the reduced population is viable in the long term, but it looks promising.

So please do enjoy the eagles. And, perhaps, consider what it took for them to be there.

Yesterday, going home I saw 2 bald eagles perched on this sculpture thing in Lake Washington. It was pretty cool, you see eagles around here occasionally but I've never seen two just hanging out like that.

Zag: The 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty and Bald Eagle Protection Act weren't "pushed through" by liberals. They had universal support.

Not really today, but this bit about Wiggle Steroscopy links to javascript code that'll help you make one. I know Chuck and some others posted up some stereoscopic landscapes at one point. Any of those still around?

I'm sure I have more but I don't recall their file names. There were some closeups of some Monopoly houses, the Monopoly battleship piece, and a six sided die and game pieces on Avalon Hill's Outdoor Survival game board. I'll see if I can find them.

Yeah, the houses look great. I had to go into paint and crop the ships so they lined up better, but it still doesn't have a great 3D effect. I just kinda moves.

I just thought the timing of this was interesting, given the current conversation.

Information on the Nintendo 3DS was revealed at E3. Among the new features: A second outward camera, for taking 3D photographs.

Which things, the stereo photographs? The idea with those is that two photos are taken a few inches apart and both focusing on the same point. This simulates the information you get from each of your eyes so that if your right eye and left eye each saw one of the shots, you'd get what appears to be a 3-D picture. The stereograms created by the javascript code work by rapidly oscillating the photos so that the viewpoint seems to shift and create a 3-D effect.

If you're asking about how the DS works, I can't help you there.

I think his question is -- or, at least, my questions is -- 'What are you supposed to do to see them as a single 3-D image as opposed to two similar but clearly separate images?' I even tried making two rolls out of paper and holding them up like binoculars, so that each eye could only see one of the images. I still was unable to convince my brain to merge them into a single image. (I know, it's a damn, recalcitrant, good-fer-nothing brain, after all.)

Ohhh. Well, if you want to use the side-by-side images then you're supposed to let your eyes unfocus until the left and right sides of the image overlap. It's a fairly difficult thing to do since then there's not a lot of definition. I much prefer the wiggle stereoscopy. (also, if the wiggle effect isn't effective for a certain pair of images, then the side-by-side isn't likely to be much more successful.)

On his show this week John Stossel mentioned an intersection in Drachten, Holland. The lights and signs were removed from an intersection that saw 30,000 cars a day. Wait time at the intersection went down. And accidents dropped to 12.5% of what it was. This made even my libertarian head asplode.

Here's his column this week on the subject.

Here's a source that gives a better explanation of what's going on. It's a clever idea, but there are very few places in the US where it would be viable; it requires a favorable ratio of traffic to real estate prices to make sense.

I'm not sure what's the matter with the rest of you, but we've had roundabouts for decades. Built by the government. We even have some that replaced lights at intersections, because the government (correctly) realized that a roundabout would be safer and more efficient in the particular location. In Cambridge I know of a roundabout with an overpass, since the traffic in one direction is heavier than the other.

For John Stossel's $1000 challenge, how about "Send humans to the moon with 1960's technology"? Admittedly, this was a rare situation where the government shined far more than it ever has done before or will probably ever do again, but there it is. But you know he'll weasel out of the bet somehow, since I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it.

No, no more efficiently, but no less, either. I was just pointing out that you guys going on about how only the free market could ever come up with such a brilliant solution was just a lot of crapola. Honestly, I mostly agree with you about the free market, but with some restrictions to avoid monopolies and abuse (which would inevitably happen if you privatize street creation and maintenance -- I mean, duh!)

But the free market is not the magic wand you seem to think it is. And the government is not the raging bunch of incompetent idiots you seem to think, either.
