Well - the idea is that you have to figure out what to do. This forum is a place where you can suggest ideas as what to do. And people can drop hints. Your hint is that the letters in the pieces should lead you to something...

When you solve the puzzle -- it will be clear that you have found the valid solution. Couple big hints: 1) Rotate the puzzle pieces as the letters indicate. 2) As indicated by the grid at the bottom, this is really two small puzzles -- both 5 x 6.

So I looked at hints and solved it... it's such a neat puzzle! Only the L at the end... it would've been nice if it looped back to the beginning changing cantakenrous to some word like "laboratories" would work

it's like a jigsaw, you have to rearrange it until it reads something. why else would the puzzle have a similarly sized "window pane" to fit the stane glass stuff into?

maybe i'm wrong but all these pieces resemble pieces from a gameboy game called daedalian opus about solving jigsaw puzzles, but this one has a hint where you arange the letters so they are facing the right way up

After a delightful little tinker with this rather sobering but fragmented piece of art, perhaps, I have come to the conclusion that the answer is indeed shrapnel.
Although it is possible to get a few other words due to the freedom given to rotating the individual letters coupled with the compliant shapes of a thousand solutions...
